22 Birds of a Feather at Cache River
Wetlands Center, 2-3:30pm
Birds can be identified in a variety of
ways. Some people can hear bird songs
and know which bird is singing. Other
birds can be identified by shape, size,
or the appearance of their beak. For
some birds, though, their feathers tell it
all. Because birds have feathers, they can
fly, stay dry when it rains, stay warm when
it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot. During
this brief program, we will take a look at
those miraculous things that make birds,
birds – feathers! 618-657-2064.

ALEXANDER
Where Two
Great Rivers Meet
With two great rivers at its doorstep,
the historic Cairo houses many landmarks that hint at its once important
Civil War role and its flirt with greatness
in river and rail commerce. Founded as
a commercial center joining river and
rail traffic, Cairo expanded to meet the
enormous demands of the Civil War.
This strategic location became headquarters, supply depot and hospital for
the Western front. You can learn more
about the area history at the Custom
House Museum, the Safford Memorial
Library and Magnolia Manor.
High on a hill above the Mississippi
River in Thebes sits the 1848 Court
House. Standing after 160 years, it
is a testament to the architect H. A.
Barkhausen and preservation. This
landmark is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Visit Tamms and you will find the
1899 Depot. This building has unique
style and served both the M&O and
C&EI Railroads at one time.
Take a scenic drive through the
County
countryside to see 9 barn quilts mounted on historic and present day farm
buildings.
Cairo remains a place where history
lovers with imagination can revisit the
romance and charm of a 19th century river town. The National Register of
Historic Places lists Cairo as ‘one of the
most fascinating cities in the State of
Illinois.’ During your visit to Alexander
County, be sure to sample one of our
ever-so-popular barbecues.
For the outdoors enthusiast,
Alexander County offers acres of farming and prime hunting, especially the
Horseshoe Lake Area known as the
‘Goose Capital of Illinois.’ Horseshoe
Lake is a paradise for bow and arrow
hunters, fishermen, photographers, bicyclers and picnickers. The rolling hills and
winding roads have been a cyclist’s paradise, and each fall intrepid riders weave
through the Shawnee National Forest
during the Tour de Shawnee, a multiroute ride the 4th Saturday of every
October. www.tourdeshawnee.com

Illinois, owing to our prolific deciduous forests and enormous
array of wildflowers. Because of our location between two
large rivers, the topography takes a wild turn from the stereotypical endless fields of the northern half of the state.
Hikers can crest a pine-tufted hilltop and catch a breathtaking valley accented by hints of boiling whitewater between
fiery treetops, zip through the forest on the area’s own
Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour zipline. Mountain biking is a
favorite local sport, especially on the River to River Trail, the
Tunnel Hill Rails-to-Trails system from Karnak to Harrisburg,
and the new IMBA-built trails near Makanda.
Whatever your pleasure, the nearest opportunity is right
around the corner.
Parks & Recreation
It’s hard to say which appeared first in Southern Illinois:
the beautiful parks or the abundant recreation opportunities.
Needless to say, two of the best-known qualities of our region
come together to provide an endless assortment of landscapes, trails, campsites, shorelines, and educational centers.
From the famous Giant City State Park in Makanda with its
horse-friendly trails and excellent fried chicken dinners to the
Metropolis Sports Park boasting the only public skateboard
facility of its kind in the entire region, or the annual ASA Illinois
Championship Archery tournament at Mermet Lake, travelers
will never be far from the next opportunity to enjoy a fun and
exciting new outdoor adventure.

Sitting atop the high bluffs overlooking the
scenic Ohio River, the heavily wooded park
is named for the 55-foot-wide cave that was
carved out of the limestone rock by water
thousands of years ago. Trails winding along
the riverbank offer views of riverboats, barges and other river scenes.
Cache River State Natural Area
8885 State Rt 37 South; 618-657-2064
Cache River State Natural Area is situated
in southernmost Illinois within a floodplain
carved long ago by glacial floodwater of the
Ohio River. When the Ohio River adopted its
present course, it left the Cache River to meander across rich and vast wetlands. Among the
outstanding natural features found within the
area today are massive cypress trees whose
flared bases, called buttresses, exceed 40 feet
circumference. Many are more than 1,000
years old, including one that has earned the
title of state champion bald cypress because
of its huge trunk girth, towering height, and
heavily branched canopy.

Explore the Illinois Ozarks
in Scenic
HARDIN
Drawn by the mighty Ohio River and
the lush green forests along her shore,
early Europeans settled in these Illinois
Ozarks during the late 1700s. Today
the quiet hills and river towns beckon
visitors for a different kind of vacation.
Little changed from the early years,
this corner of southeastern Illinois
offers a pleasant diversion for travelers seeking the road less traveled. She
may truly represent Illinois’ Mile After
Magnificent Mile.
Tired of driving? Hike our many trails,
go for a swim in the ‘ol swimming hole,
ride horseback, fish for the one that
didn’t get away, picnic in one of our
many parks, explore treasures in antique
shops, enjoy the breathtaking vistas of
nature, bike ride, or watch a river barge
work its way against current. You can
also ride the only remaining Illinois
Ferry operating the Ohio River.
Do you enjoy history? Retrace the
steps of Davy Crockett. Learn of pirates
and counterfeiters . . . and murder. See
an old Illinois Iron Furnace from the
1800s. Collect a bit of fluorspar, the
Illinois state mineral. From historic caves
to stately mansions, the historic river
County
towns are full of surprises.
Here the hills and hollows are reminders of earlier days . . . where families span
generations, the neighborhoods make
you feel welcome, and the pace can be
your own.

disabled persons to hunt, fish, and
pursue outdoor activities. In 1999,
the IDNR addressed these issues
establishing a new program entitled,
“Disabled Outdoor Opportunities.”
Disabled hunters can participate in deer, pheasant, waterfowl,
and dove hunting at various sites
throughtout Illinois. A number of
fishing events are held each year as
well. For more information on the
“Disabled Outdoor Opportunities”

The Great River Road
The Great River Road stretches from East Dubuque to the north
and Cairo to the south. The 570-mile byway meanders along the
Mississippi River through 18 counties and traces the broad waterway along upland meadows, dense forests, limestone bluffs and
cypress swamps.
In the southern tip of Illinois, follow Rt 3 along riverside flatlands edging the timeworn hills of the Shawnee National Forest.
At Thebes, an 1845 courthouse overlooks the river. According
to local lore, Abraham Lincoln practiced law here. Dred Scott, a
slave whose Supreme Court case was one of the factors leading to the Civil War, slept in the courthouse jail. 7 miles south of
Thebes, near Olive Branch is Horseshoe Lake Conservation area.
At the very southern tip of Illinois is Fort Defiance Park, where
you can see a rippling line where the Ohio’s blue waters meet the
broad, brown Mississippi. From this spot, General Ulysses S. Grant
launched his army into the south.

scenery. This corridor is a mecca of historical, architectural and
archaeological sites, festivals, fall foliage, beautiful scenery, adventure and outdoor recreation.

JOHNSON
Nestled in the heart of the Shawnee
National Forest, Johnson County has
beauty unsurpassed by any other county in the state. With the Cache River State
Natural Area featuring Heron Pond, wildlife and rare species of plants and animals
are plentiful.
Johnson County offers a multitude of
outdoor recreation including an excellent 18-hole golf course and bicycling
opportunities. Vast areas throughout the
national forest provide unlimited horseback and hiking trails. The River to River
Trail follows 150-miles of some of the
most beautiful scenery in the Midwest.
Bicyclists enjoy riding along the
Bicentennial Trail, which is the national
coast-to-coast trail established in 1976.
Southernmost Illinois offers about 140
miles of the 4,200-plus mile trek with
trails through Tunnel Hill, Goreville, and
Giant City State Park areas. An old railway converted bike path, the Tunnel
Hill State Trail is a 45-mile trail winding through farmland, thick woods, lush
wetlands and a tunnel for which it was
named, and offers miles of cycling and
hiking for all ages.
Numerous lakes provide outstanding
fishing, boating, and swimming. For the
adventurer, Ferne Clyffe State Park and
other natural areas offer scenic bluffs and
County
caves for hours of exploration. If you just
want to relax while enjoying the ‘great
outdoors’, there’s a picnic table or park
bench waiting for you at one of the many
fine parks.
During your visit to Johnson County,

Illinois Wine Country
Illinois wine country has been a popular, and widening, spot on the map because of the growth in the
winemaking industry and support of the local grape growers' booming businesses.
What few wine connoisseurs realize, though, is that Illinois had already claimed honors as the fourth largest grape-producing state by the early 1900s. If that wasn't impressive enough, no less than one-quarter of
the wine produced in the United States came from good old Land of Lincoln as well.
Today Illinois still enjoys a relatively high ranking - twelfth - in the wine-producing states. With
wine-making on the rise all across the US, Illinois is experiencing heightened interest, appreciation, and
sales of the product.
Thanks to support from the Illinois Grape and Wine Resources Council and the Illinois Grape Growers and
Vintners Association, the state's original five wineries of 1990 have blossomed to nearly ten times the number this year, with nearly fifty wineries producing their own special craft.
What's more, the wine produced in this region is serious stuff, having won awards in state, national,
and international competitions. Even some of the best California winemakers were topped by Illinois
contenders.
Welcome to wine country. Enjoy!

MASSAC
Massac County, with the Ohio River
at its doorstep, is rich in history. Fort
Massac State Park is the oldest state
park in the state. The fort was used
in 1757 during the French and Indian
War and served as a Customs Office
from 1799 to 1807. It was dismantled
in 1814 and reconstructed in 1971-73
as a museum containing the fort’s history, and renovated again in 2002.
Metropolis is the official Home of
Superman and proudly honors its
favorite son with a 15-foot bronze
statue of America’s super hero right
in the middle of Superman Square.
A statue of actress Noel Neil, posed
as Lois Lane, stands just two blocks
up the street from Superman Square.
The Super Museum located in the
heart of Metropolis on Superman
Square is home to the world’s largest
privately owned Superman collection.
There you will find original costumes,
movie props, toys, original artwork,
posters, stills, games, statues, action
figures and so much more on display. This is a must for the Superman
enthusiast!
Massac County has many outdoor
activities offering something for
County
everyone. Great fishing can be found
throughout the area, and award-winning scuba diving and diving instruction are available. Mermet Lake and
a chain of lakes in the Unionville
Bottoms are popular spots for fishing. Scenic rolling hills provide the
perfect setting for those who enjoy
hiking, camping, or horseback riding.
Ducks, geese, turkey, quail, and deer
are plentiful in the area for those who
enjoy hunting.
For those seeking oddities,
Metropolis is the burial place of the
Bird Man of Alcatraz and John Marvin
Steele, the paratrooper who landed
on the church tower in Sainte-MèreÉglise, France on D-Day.
Metropolis is known for its gaming
entertainment and spectacular events
that draw visitors from near and far.
Harrah’s Metropolis Casino offers
gaming entertainment. The annual
Superman Celebration, and the ASA
Illinois Championship Archery tournament, both in June, and the Fort
Massac Encampment in October are
three of the biggest events in the
entire region.

Museums, Historic Sites & Homes
Southernmost Illinois has a long and rich history, from
which many buildings, forts, and monuments still stand,
including civil war relics and churches over a century old.
In the 1800s, parts of the region were bustling with activity, particularly along the rivers and in the larger towns.
Railroads crisscrossed the land, and as Southern Illinois
was part of the Coal Belt, enough trade existed to supply
the hundreds of antique shops found in almost every town

Kirkpatrick Pottery
Between 1859 and 1896 the brothers
Cornwall and W. Wallace Kirkpatrick built and
operated a large stoneware pottery in Anna.
The excellent clay in the area, together with
the skill of the potters, brought much fame
and prestige to the company. They made
many types of utilitarian wares, bricks, drain
tiles and giftware. The most collectible pieces made by the pottery are the pig-shaped
bottles and jugs with special inscriptions,
applied animals and figures. Many of their
pieces are one-of-a-kind, with commentary
on the political or social events of the day.
Exhibits can be seen at the Stinson Memorial
Library, Isom's Antiques in Anna, and the
Union County Museum.

Where could you find waterfalls, canyons, spectacular forests, creeks, lakes,
a mighty river, vineyards, amazing starscapes and wildlife? Such wonders
abound in Africa, Australia, Brazil or
Hawaii, but could you imagine all this
can be found in Pope County, Illinois?

Explore the Wonders of the
Shawnee Hills in
UNION
County
Whether you’re looking for one-of-akind art, wine, or antiques, or exploring
the great outdoors, the Shawnee Hills
of Union county can take you there.
As you explore the wonders of
the Shawnee Hills, you will find Bald
Knob Cross which stands high on the
most prominent elevation in Southern
Illinois. Surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Shawnee National Forest; Bald
Knob rises more than 1000 feet above
sea level.
As you travel the rolling Southern
Illinois countryside you can sip your way
along and discover truly surprising and
authentic wine culture in the Shawnee
Hills American Viticultural area, Illinois’
first region acknowledged for its distinctive winemaking properties.
Nestled in Shawnee Hills, Union
County has many bluffs and wilderness areas scattered among the sprawling Shawnee National Forest and Giant
City State Park that are ideal for camping, hiking, horseback riding, hunting,
and numerous other outdoor activities.
Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour includes 9
platforms high in the trees, three aerial
suspension bridges, the longest spanning 180 feet, and two short ground
hikes. Inns, cabins, cottages and bed &
Breakfasts dot the region and are great
launching pads for wine tasting, hiking
or biking enthusiasts and many offer a
secluded getaway.
Built in 1854, the Illinois Central
Railroad was instrumental in converting the river to rail traffic. The railroads
were used for shipping apples, peaches, strawberries, peppers, and melons
to Chicago and New Orleans in refrigerated cars, first developed in Cobden.
Flamm Orchards and Rendleman
Orchards Farm Market are 2 popular stops for area produce and serve
up yummy fresh desserts with apples,
peaches or strawberries.
The Annabelle Hydrangea was discovered in Anna, IL. The native shrub
Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’
grows wild in partly shady and moist
soils in southern Illinois. It grows 4 feet
tall with large white flowers and dark
green foliage, and blooms from early to
late summer.

The members of the Shawnee Wine Trail Lodging Association
invite you to experience the best of Southernmost Illinois. Our unique
inns, cottages, and cabins offer you everything you need to make your
trip a memorable one. Windy Hill Acres Inn is a beautiful, five-room cabin, originally
a Rock Potato House. Built in the 1800s, this unique cabin was used
to store the local famers’ sweet potatoes until they could be shipped
to Chicago. This unique inn has two bedrooms and sleeps up to four
people.
Shawnee Hill Bed and Breakfast is on the property of a cave into
which Daniel Boone Carved his name in 1766. You can hike the cave,
fish in the stocked ponds or do a little bird watching. This bed and
breakfast has three suites, and a gourmet breakfast is served to guests.
The unique, one-of-a-kind Davie School Inn is recycled from a
1910 grade school that sat empty for five years before the owners saved
it. Known for its huge suites and awesome hospitality, it is a must-see
inn. Couples can enjoy the ad-ons that are available, such as in-suite
massages. The inn has 11 suites and sleeps up to 30. Water Valley Inn, built in 1922, is a two-story farmhouse located
on 100 beautiful acres where outdoor weddings are welcome. The
house is adorned with a handcrafted wood interior. This inn can
accommodate individuals, couples, families and groups up to 10 based
on double occupancy. The entire inn is your home away from home.
One of the most eco-friendly lodges in Illinois is the Makanda
Inn. This Inn is defined by its rustic elegance and noteworthy fresh
breakfast. Situated on an 18-acre wooded site with a small creek
winding through it, the inn
was carefully planned to fit
into the natural environment.
The inn has four suites and
three cottages. Historic Bell Hill Bed
and Breakfast, built in 1850,
presents the most breathtaking
panoramic views imaginable.
Rich in history, Bell Hill has
four rooms and one large suite

perfect place for a wedding with its beautiful outdoor setting. The Goddard Place is a private, cozy, one room cabin in a
peaceful setting amongst the pine trees. Enjoy the deck overlooking
the stocked pond. It is a great get away for a couple to just relax,
renew and unwind.
Imagine staying at a vineyard. Kite Hill Vineyards Bed and
Breakfast and Winery is a little bit of heaven off 127. Take a stroll
through the vineyard and sip some wine at the winery while taking
in the views of the lake. This bed and breakfast has two rooms
available with a three-course full breakfast. Another wonderful winery is Blue Sky Vineyard. Experience
the romance of Italy and the spectacular views of the 12-acre
vineyard from your own private balcony. You also can sip on a glass
of wine from the patio overlooking the waterfall. This vineyard has
two beautiful suites available.
Hidden Lake Guest House is situated on eight acres of wood
and gardens. Enjoy the chimney on a cool evening or count the
fireflies. Walk the grounds with an early morning cup of coffee.
This unique guest house has three suites for you to enjoy.
All across the Shawnee Heartland, you will find unique and
diverse lodging from which to choose. Whether you are here for
a family getaway or for a romantic interlude, we can offer you a
perfect setting.
Proud members of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail since 1998.

A Total Eclipse
of the Sun
There will be a total eclipse of the sun on Monday
afternoon, August 21, 2017 in Southernmost Illinois.
Totality will last 2 minutes and 44.3 seconds which
means day will turn to night for that length of time. The
exact center of maximum duration is in the Makanda, IL
area of the Shawnee National Forest.
The central line of maximum totality runs from the
Mississippi River near Route 3 just south of Chester
Illinois all the way to just south of Golconda Illinois at the
Ohio River. The times at these two river locations is a halfof-a-second less than the Shawnee National Forest time.
For many, this is an
event not to be missed.
A partial eclipse is interesting but forgettable,
while a total eclipse is a
memorable, life-changing event which burns
itself into memory and
never fades. Plan now
to visit Southernmost
Illinois for this rare event.
Remember, ‘close’ is not
close enough; in order to
see the eclipse in all its
glory, you must – Get thee
to the path!
