TRAVEL ACTIVE GETAWAY Out in the open When the forecast is all blue skies, plan a weekend getaway around one of these escapades. Fun inn the su WRITER Kit Bernardi Flying high This is what ziplining sounds like: It The three-hour zip-lining adventure crosses 35 acres of dense trees and sandstone bluffs bordering the Shawnee National Forest near Makanda, Illinois, about 115 miles southeast of St. Louis. Each segment of the gravity-fed cable system provides woodsy views and a thrill as you glide along the course. Zip No. 6 swoops 40 feet above the forest floor; No. 8 runs more than 1,000 feet long and clocks up to 40 mph. In addition to the zip lines, three short hikes between platforms squeeze past giant boulders and cross suspension bridges. A 20-minute “flight school” prepares you for the course, covering the how-tos of launching, riding and breaking at the end of each zip. But nothing can quite prepare you for the first heart-pumping step off a platform high above the ground and then suddenly, flying. 10 JUNE 2014 | MIDWEST LIVING PHOTOGRAPHS: COURTESY OF SHAWNEE BLUFFS CANOPY TOUR starts as a low hum and then revs up to a soprano trill as you gain speed. To plan your trip, contact the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau (608/255-2537; www.visitmadison.com). What to do walk: newbies start on their knees then spend some shaky time mastering how to rise and balance. But the learning curve proves short. “Within 10 minutes, most of our students are ready to stand up,” says Gary Stone, who owns Paddleboard Specialists at Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. The smooth, no-wake lake is ideal for learning standup paddleboarding (SUP) and getting comfortable with unfamiliar equipment. A wide, flat board provides plenty of stability (some peace-seekers even practice yoga on their boards), and a wide paddle produces maximum propulsion with minimum effort. Perhaps that’s why SUP is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. In a 2013 report, the Outdoor Foundation noted that SUP drew more first-timers than any other outdoor sport. So if you decide to give this rising sport a shot, don’t worry about the shaky start—you’ll be in good company. 16 JUNE 2014 | MIDWEST LIVING OUT & ABOUT Where to eat Marigold Kitchen Brioche French toast and pancakes fuel a day on the water (608/661-5559; marigoldkitchen.com).
