or School of the Soldier will be held for
French troops at Fort Massac State Park.
French and Indian war period living historians from throughout the Midwest will
attend this two day training session. You
will see the Marines and the milice as they
learn the weapons, drills, marching, and
tactical maneuvers of the French military

on aquatic invertebrates and the strange and
exciting adaptations they have developed to

for hundreds of people of all ages to gather
to Paint the Town. This is a unique community
art event. Come participate in the arts together, as families and individuals. The focus of the
event is the painting of four-foot squares on
the parking lot. To celebrate its 3nd season, the
event will offer 100 squares for painting; each
is a frame ready to receive the original work
of these artists. If it rains, the squares will be in
the Center Stage gallery building across the

Hometown Teams, the
Smithsonian’s newest
traveling exhibit. The
exhibit seeks to use
sports to reflect the
trials and triumphs of
the American experience that have shaped
the country’s national
character. All levels of
sports will be covered,
from professional match-ups to pick-up games on the local playground. The exhibition is national in theme and local in scope, with each site interpreting the exhibit to share their local history and sports heritage. One of the many unique stories
that will be showcased is the legendary 1964 run to the state basketball championship final by Cobden High School’s famous Appleknockers. The Illinois Humanities
Council will bring the exhibit to the Union County Museum w/Union County
Historical & Genealogy Society from March 1 - April 14. Visit the Illinois Humanities

A shallow wetland dominated by cypress
and tupelo trees, featuring a boardwalk that
winds its way into the secluded depths of this
forested swamp, providing visitors a chance
to step back in time and observe wetland
and aquatic ecosystems that have remained
relatively undisturbed for thousands of years.
During the growing season, massive graybrown cypress trunks arise from a floating
carpet of brilliant emerald duckweed. These
living pillars of wood extend high over the
swamp before disappearing into a shadowfilled canopy. Here, seldom-seen but oftenheard bird-voiced tree frogs haunt the leafy
branches of tall cypress trees, their melodious calls considered by many to be the most
beautiful of all the frog voices. Above and
below the water’s surface, birds, mammals,
reptiles, amphibians and insects interact in a
symphony of survival.

Few natural formations are as awe-inspiring
or intriguing as a cave. The deep, dark recesses immediately conjure up images of adventure, mystery, terror, robbers and pirates.
At Cave-In-Rock State Park you can experience this fascination for yourself. Sitting atop
the high bluffs overlooking the scenic Ohio
River, the heavily wooded park is named for
the 55-foot-wide cave that was carved out
of the limestone rock by water thousands of
years ago. Trails winding along the riverbank
offer views of riverboats, barges and other
river scenes.

Cache River State Natural Area is situated
in southernmost Illinois within a floodplain
carved long ago by glacial floodwater of
the Ohio River. When the Ohio River adopted its present course, it left the Cache River
to meander across rich and vast wetlands.
Among the outstanding natural features
found within the area today are massive
cypress trees whose flared bases, called
buttresses, exceed 40 feet circumference.
Many are more than 1,000 years old, including one that has earned the title of state
champion bald cypress because of its huge
trunk girth, towering height, and heavily
branched canopy.

forest. The site has received national recognition for its songbird populations and is a
popular hunting and wildlife watching spot.

the uplands of the Shawnee National Forest

wildflowers and 20 types of ferns. Ten walking trails or tractor paths give access to all

Jackson Falls is probably Southern Illinois’
finest sport climbing area and one of the
Midwest hot spots offering approx. 60 climbs
along the bluffs and boulders. The Falls'
sandstone is really featured and offers slopers, pockets, crimps and jugs. The climbs are
50-60 feet in height and a lot of them are on
free-standing towers, offering nice exposure.

and Union, the Refuge purchase boundary
consists of 35,320 acres. This is a remarkable area for birding, hunting and walking
along nature trails. The Refuge is part of the
Cache River Wetlands project, a joint venture
partnership which includes U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy,
Illinois Department of Natural Resources and
Ducks Unlimited. The Joint Venture partners
strive to protect and restore the unique natural features of this area, while providing a
diversity of recreational opportunities.

Limekiln Slough Trail/Springs

Unusual trail for wildlife and nature viewing. At the end of the trail is the largest
of the Limekiln Springs. You can see clear
cold water flowing a short distance through
cypress tree knees into the swamp (unless
flooded). This is one of the several springs
that maintain water in the swamp during
drought periods and that provide special
habitat for uncommon aquatic species.
“get into the swamp” for wildlife viewing and
photography. Wildcat Bluff contains trails
that offer an overview of the Cache River, its
swamps and floodplain forest.

A 3.6-mile marked canoe route winds through
backwater sloughs to the state champion bald
cypress. Canoeing the Lower Cache River is a
quality experience through the still waters of
a southern cypress swamp. The canoe trail is
marked with international signs and takes the
visitor to the Illinois champion bald cypress
tree. The Lower Cache River swamp trail leads
through the swamp paralleling Cypress Creek.
It is an excellent trail for wildlife observation,
especially at dusk when the swamp comes
alive with nocturnal noises.

Cache River State
Natural Area
4 miles south of Vienna on Rt 45
Totaling 14,791 acres in Johnson, Massac
and Pulaski counties. Includes: Little Black
Slough, Heron Pond and Wildcat Bluff. Little
Black Slough is dominated by bald cypress
and tupelo gum trees and offers the visitor
a view of great blue heron amid the croaking of bird-voiced tree frogs. The floating
boardwalk at Heron Pond enables visitors to
Cache River.

Tunnel Hill State Trail

Bicycling/hiking trail spans 34 scenic
miles from Harrisburg to Vienna, with an
additional 13 miles connecting Vienna to
Karnak. The trail then continues to the site
of the IDNR Cache River Wetland Center.
This Rails to Trails project is for day-use
and offers drinking water, privy toilets and
parking at the access areas. The trail surface is compacted limestone screening.
The Tour De Shawnee
The rolling hills and winding roads of southernmost Illinois long have
been a cyclist’s paradise, and each fall intrepid riders weave through the
Shawnee National Forest during the Tour De Shawnee, a multi-route ride
that takes place each fall.
Organized by the Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone and
Alexander County Tourism, the event began in 2009 and already draws
hundreds of cyclists each year from locales throughout the Midwest.
The event includes half a dozen routes from which participants can
choose, including 15-mile, 30-mile flat, 30-mile hilly, 45-mile, 62-mile and
100-mile rides. In the past, routes have regaled riders with breathtaking
views of the Shawnee and stops at historical and cultural landmarks, including Horseshoe Lake, the Tamms Railroad Depot and the Olmsted Dam.
The annual ride has quickly become a community effort, with dozens
of sponsors large and small signing up to support the event. In addition,
volunteers assist by providing rest stops along the way. Plans already are
underway for the next Tour De Shawnee, which is slated to begin Saturday,
Oct. 25, 2013, at Olive Branch in Alexander County. To learn more about the

Home of a totem pole carved from a 100-yearold cedar tree by Archie Russ. Faces on the
pole represent the seven different clans of
the Cherokee Nation. The base represents
the Cherokee seal, and the flags represent
the eight states the historically tragic “Trail of
Tears” crossed. Park offers scenic picnic areas
and serves as the venue for the annual Car
Show held the first weekend of October.

These bottomland lakes in Union County
are not large lakes, but they give up some of
the largest bluegill and crappie in Southern
Illinois. Grassy Lake has only 3 miles of shoreline to go with its 310 acres of water. Lyerla
Lake has 260 acres of water and 3.8 miles of
shoreline. Boat fishing with 10 horsepower
motors is allowed for the anglers fishing for
bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie and catfish.

The Wetlands Center contains 2,000 sq. ft. of
exhibit area, a 725 sq. ft. audio visual room, 4

the north end of the building. The Wetlands
Center is linked to the Tunnel Hill State
bicycle trail which is 45 miles to Harrisburg,
Illinois, There is also a 2,600 ft. handicap hiking trail that has a wildlife viewing mound
overlooking the restored wetland of Cypress

The Great River Road
The Great River Road stretches from East Dubuque to the north
and Cairo to the south. The 570-mile byway meanders along the
Mississippi River through 18 counties and traces the broad waterway along upland meadows, dense forests, limestone bluffs and
cypress swamps.
In the southern tip of Illinois, follow Rt 3 along riverside flatlands edging the timeworn hills of the Shawnee National Forest.
At Thebes, an 1845 courthouse overlooks the river. According
to local lore, Abraham Lincoln practiced law here. Dred Scott, a
slave whose Supreme Court case was one of the factors leading to the Civil War, slept in the courthouse jail. 7 miles south of
Thebes, near Olive Branch is Horseshoe Lake Conservation area.
At the very southern tip of Illinois is Fort Defiance Park, where
you can see a rippling line where the Ohio’s blue waters meet the
broad, brown Mississippi. From this spot, General Ulysses S. Grant
launched his army into the south.

The Ohio River Scenic Byway Illinois
The Ohio River National Scenic Byway, a 967-mile tri-state byway,
is the only one in the nation to link together three national forests
– Wayne in Ohio, Hoosier in Indiana, and Shawnee in Illinois. Illinois
is home to 188 miles of this magnificent byway and the route is well
marked with the ‘Ohio River Scenic Byway’ signage.
Motorists who seek a more relaxing pace, away from the crowded highways and interstates, need to exit off the fast lane and
merge onto the Ohio River Scenic Byway, where they will find a
relaxing drive across some of southern Illinois’ most picturesque
scenery. This corridor is a mecca of historical, architectural and
archaeological sites, festivals, fall foliage, beautiful scenery, adventure and outdoor recreation.
So, if you are looking for a great time and making memories, for a
weekend getaway or simply a leisurely drive, the Ohio River Scenic

A new 70-foot concrete boat ramp and parking area, is located just south of Mound City
off Highway 51. The fishing is good in the
old channel of the Cache River, where bluegill, bass, and crappie are caught. Part of the
Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, this
access is available to all watercraft with less
than 10 horsepower engines.

1,000 acres of water filled with black and
white crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill,
channel catfish, carp, white bass and walleye. The Little Grassy Fish Hatchery is a great
place to learn more about raising the stock
for nearby lakes.
DONGOLA
waterfowl hunting area. The water was
developed for duck hunting but geese also
frequent the area each winter. The shallow,
450-acre lake provides excellent fishing for
largemouth bass, channel catfish and most
panfish. The lake is closed 2 weeks prior to
duck hunting season and reopens at the
close of duck season. Facilities include picnic area, hiking trails and boating. Adjoining
the area is the Nature Preserve including 43acres that have been set aside for non-game,
rare and endangered species. Unusual plant
species are also found in this area. A raised
observation platform extends from the trail
into the swamp.

An old cypress swamp converted into a
Kinkaid Lake
West of Murphysboro on Rt. 149, right on

This is one of the few lakes in Southern
Illinois to successfully stock muskie. Its 2,750
acres wind around the northwestern hills of
Shawnee National Forest. It has 92 miles of
shoreline and a maximum depth of 80 feet.
Other fish species include largemouth bass,
spotted bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, bullheads, carp, walleye, white
bass and suckers.

This 144-acre lake in Jackson County has
7.5 miles of shoreline and a maximum
depth of 40 feet. It provides largemouth
bass, spotted bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, bullheads, carp, white
bass and suckers.

The Golconda Marina
Travelers along the Ohio River will find
nestled amid the scenery the Golconda
Marina, a full-service marina located in
southeast Pope County. The 274-acre area
acts as the gateway to the Smithland Pool
area of the Ohio River and a hub for myriad
fishing, boating and hiking opportunities.
The marina serves as “a floating convenience store,” says Carrie DeVore, who with
her husband Doug managed the marina
during the 2013 season and also owns and
operates the nearby Willowbrook Cabin
Rental. “It’s a good time had by all.”
The marina, completed jointly by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois
Department of Natural Resources, opened
in 1988 and now stands as one of the finest
marinas along the Ohio River.
A featured attraction is Smithland Pool,
a body of water more than 72 miles long
that serves as a haven for recreational
boating and fishing. The pool also provides easy deep-water access to Evansville,
Ind., Kentucky Lake, Barkley Lake and even
Mobile, Ala.
A bluff located on the north side of the
marina, Rauchfuss Hill, offers a pristine spot
from which to watch boats pass on the
river, and the area now serves as home to a
campground, picnic area and a nearby hiking trail.
DeVore said the marina area is a natural
paradise for fishing, boating, hiking and
even horseback riding, and a host of special
events take place each year. Pontoon boats
also are available for rental, and the marina features more than 200 slips. For more

Zipping through the Shawnee
First you feel the speed, and then you hear the sound — an unforgettable metallic scream revving from the cable above as you zip
past the peaceful forest floor below. The unusual combination of
pulse-pounding adrenaline and woodland serenity is just what Marc
Miles had in mind.
“You know in your heart when you’ve done the right thing,” says
Miles, who last year with his wife, Candy, opened a new venture,
Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour, amid the peaceful hills of the Shawnee
National Forest.“It just feels right. It’s so exciting to me to see people
excited about it.”
Exciting is a modest word to describe the hair-raising adventure that waits above 83 acres of otherwise
calm forest. Built by Geronimo Construction, known
for its world-class zip line tours, the experience Miles
now offers includes a three-hour tour on eight zip
lines that whisk visitors through the trees at speeds
that sometimes approach 40 miles per hour.
Along the way, adventure-seekers also get a guided look at the trees, rocks and other natural features
that make up the Shawnee — both from the dizzying
heights above and from hiking trails below. The experience also includes walks across intricately constructed aerial bridges, one of them 180 feet long.
Miles, an equine veterinarian by trade, built his first
zip line years ago in his backyard as an amusement
for his children. The attraction only grew from there.
Three years of intensive research preceded the opening of Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour — a time during
which Miles decided he wanted to build a zip line
attraction that married the thrilling activity with the
wonder of nature.
To that end, Miles hired Geronimo Construction to
build a zip line tour that relies not on artificial platforms, as many
others do, but rather the trees of the Shawnee themselves. He and
his hired staff also underwent rigorous safety training to ensure that
the thrills enjoyed by visitors would be fun and with a minimum of
risk. Throughout a tour, whether on a line, a bridge or a platform,
visitors remain harnessed and tethered to safety; indeed, Miles says
“zipping” at the facility is safer than driving in area traffic.
“Safety is so critical,” Miles says. “It’s at the top of my list.”
Guests who choose to embark on the three-hour tour begin at
an up-and-coming welcome center, where they sign waivers, meet
their trained guides and become acquainted with their equipment.
After suiting up and taking a short hike, they arrive at “flight school,”
where guides provide a short primer on how to properly zip, including the proper posture and how to brake.
With eight lines now zig-zagging across this private stretch of the
forest, Miles is happy to see his efforts finally reach fruition just at the
start of a new outdoor season — and he already sees possible future
developments, including the addition of cabins and bike trails.
“There’s a lot of things we could do,” he says.

Illinois Wine Country
Illinois wine country has been a popular, and widening, spot on the map because of the growth in the
winemaking industry and support of the local grape growers' booming businesses.
What few wine connoisseurs realize, though, is that Illinois had already claimed honors as the fourth largest grape-producing state by the early 1900s. If that wasn't impressive enough, no less than one-quarter of
the wine produced in the United States came from good old Land of Lincoln as well.
Today Illinois still enjoys a relatively high ranking - twelfth - in the wine-producing states. With
wine-making on the rise all across the US, Illinois is experiencing heightened interest, appreciation, and
sales of the product.
Thanks to support from the Illinois Grape and Wine Resources Council and the Illinois Grape Growers and
Vintners Association, the state's original five wineries of 1990 have blossomed to nearly ten times the number this year, with nearly fifty wineries producing their own special craft.
What's more, the wine produced in this region is serious stuff, having won awards in state, national,
and international competitions. Even some of the best California winemakers were topped by Illinois
contenders.

It all started nearly 30 years ago as a passing interest, and now it has become the
first in a budding new tourism business for
Southern Illinois. One of the first breweries to
open in the region was Big Muddy Brewing in
Murphysboro. The business, located at 1430
N. 7th St. (618-684-8833, www.bigmuddybrewing.com), has been a mainstay on the local
scene for three years. Owner and operator
Chuck Stuhrenberg first started micro brewing in the 1980s while he was a student at
Southern Illinois University. He and his friends
home-brewed their own concoctions, and it
was something he decided to do because he
knew it could take flight.
“I kept hearing that there was going to be
a brewery opening up,” he says. “I kept waiting and then decided to just do it myself.”
In July 2009, Stuhrenberg opened for business, and Big Muddy Brewery became the
first brewery in Murphysboro in more than
50 years. The first beers offered were the
Kinkaid Wheat, a recipe that had been popular among Stuhrenberg and his family and
friends. It also had the style and consistency that Stuhrenberg thought would be best
suited to those who drank more conventional
corporate brews.
The next beer up was the Saluki Dunkel
Dog, a dark amber style of brew. Those inaugural brews proved to be successful and are
now on tap and sold at various local establishments across the region. Big Muddy Brewing
now has distribution in southeast Missouri,
around the Chicago area, into St. Louis and
Central Illinois and even in New Jersey. There
Brad Genung, owner, winemaker and brewer at
Owl Creek Vineyard, uses locally grown apples to
create Apple Knocker Hard Ciders – the first local
ciders in the Shawnee Hills region. Currently there
are three styles of Apple Knocker hard ciders on the
market:
• Hard Knocks is a dry hard cider and oak barrel
fermented. Awarded Second Place in the National
Wood and Barrel Aged Beer Competition in
Chicago.
• Bad Apple is made from green apples. It’s tart
and crisp, on the drier side but not as dry as Hard
Knocks.
Sweet Knockers is sweeter but definitely not
overly sweet — “just sweet enough,” Genung said.

have sprouted up to serve up the suds and
make a name for themselves in the craft beer
business. Some have even been recognized
nationally for their craft.
Little Egypt Beer is located in Ava. Owner
Ken Rhude has been homebrewing for more
than 20 years and is a certified beer judge
who has judged both amateur and professional beer competitions. Rhude attended
brewing school at Siebel/Doemen’s World
Brewing Academy in 2002. He has also
brewed professionally with BJ’s Restaurant
and Brewery in Woodland Hills, California, and
Oxnard, California.
Little Egypt specializes in a variety of beers,
including a smooth Gold, a sweet Red ale,
specialty beers such as Saison and English,
and many more ready and willing to go down

Also in Ava, the Scratch Brewing Company is
a microbrewery and farm located just outside
the Shawnee National Forest at 264 Thompson
Road. It was started by three award-winning
home brewers and focuses on special farmhouse beers and other styles brewed with
home-grown and locally farmed and foraged
ingredients. Some of those special ingredients include nettle, elderberry, ginger, dandelion, maple sap and a variety of wood additions. Check out more about the Scratch Beer

15 years, Von Jakob in Alto Pass (230 Hwy 127

hand at micro brewing. The brewery offers
eight styles of beer ranging from the crisp

The Marine Ways in Mound City served as a naval depot
during the Civil War. An historical marker and future interpretive observation overlook provides visitors with rich history
and panoramic views.
Visitors can get a detailed look at the history of the region
in the Safford Memorial Library in Cairo, full of antique documents and paintings, or at The Old Depot in Tamms, an original Chicago railroad depot restored as a museum.
Historic homes can be found in nearly every town, many of
which are now museums or bed and breakfasts.

Museums, Historic Sites & Homes
Southernmost Illinois has a long and rich history, from
which many buildings, forts, and monuments still stand,
including civil war relics and churches over a century old.
In the 1800s, parts of the region were bustling with activity, particularly along the rivers and in the larger towns.
Railroads crisscrossed the land, and as Southern Illinois
was part of the Coal Belt, enough trade existed to supply
the hundreds of antique shops found in almost every town
between the rivers.
Many churches built in the early 1800s still stand near
the towns that grew up around them, including the Camp
Ground Church in Anna, on the site of a winter encampment
on the Trail of Tears for the Cherokee Nation.

Built as a monument of peace, the Cross at
Bald Knob stands 111 feet tall and is 22 feet
square at the base. Its arms extend to 63 feet
horizontally. The highest landmark in Union
County, the Cross can be seen over an area of
7,500 square miles when illuminated at night.

Kirkpatrick Pottery
Between 1859 and 1896 the brothers
Cornwall and W. Wallace Kirkpatrick built and
operated a large stoneware pottery in Anna.
The excellent clay in the area, together with
the skill of the potters, brought much fame
and prestige to the company. They made
many types of utilitarian wares, bricks, drain
tiles and giftware. The most collectible pieces made by the pottery are the pig-shaped
bottles and jugs with special inscriptions,
applied animals and figures. Many of their
pieces are one-of-a-kind, with commentary
on the political or social events of the day.
Exhibits can be seen at the Stinson Memorial
Library, Isom's Antiques in Anna, and the
Union County Museum.

Nestled in the middle of a long block of
beautiful turn-of-the-century homes in the
small town of Anna, the diminutive church
is an important reminder of our past. The
cornerstone is dated 1886. St. Anne's is the
perfect place for intimate events—such as
small weddings, renewal of vows, anniversary gatherings, baby showers or christenings, receptions, art shows, recitals, and other
appropriate theatrical or musical events.

Stinson, who left his estate for the establishment of a library. The building is made from
native limestone and was dedicated in 1914.

Camp Ground Church

Cumberland Presbyterian Church in continuous operation since 1850 on the site of a
winter encampment during the Trail of Tears.
Cemetery is first site certified in Illinois by the
National Park Service and recognized by the
national Trail of Tears Association as a Trail of
Tears burial ground. According to the NPS,
it is the only continuing cemetery with scientifically documented, multiple Cherokee
burials along the trail from the eastern states
to Oklahoma.

Kincaid Mounds State Historic Site is a
nationally significant Native-American
archaeological treasure. From about 800
AD to 1500 AD it was the ‘capital’ of a
chiefdom that stretched from Brookport to
Hamletsburg along the Ohio River. Large
flat-topped mounds were erected on which
the houses and temples of civil and religious
elite stood. Today, the mounds still exist and
a constructed overlook platform and interpretive panels tell the story of the significant contribution and historical value of the
Native American culture.

elegant French Second Empire style home is
a photographer’s delight. ‘Riverlore’ was built
in 1865 for Capt. William Parker Halliday who
was president of Cairo’s first bank. His earlier
steamboat career prompted him to build a
‘Captain’s Walk’ atop the third story. Beautiful
gardens surround the home. Admission fee.

Baptist church was organized in 1880.
Church of the Redeemer Episcopal
to have been active for 500 years, ending
about 500 years ago. The trail leads to a
Native American cemetery, the remains of
a stone wall, and the depressions excavated for buildings in the small town. But the
highlights of the site are the petroglyphs
(carvings in rock) of a thunder bird, rattle
snake, corn stalk in bloom.

Lincoln-Douglas 3rd Debate
Site and Statues
Located in Lincoln Memorial Park north of the
Jonesboro square was the site of the 3rd 1858
United States Senatorial debate between
Abraham Lincoln and incumbent Stephen
Douglas. Although Douglas was appointed
senator by the state legislature after these
debates, Abraham Lincoln became well
known nationwide because these debates
were covered by the nation’s leading newspapers. Follow the steps from town to the site
and walk where Lincoln walked.

Located on the National Register of Historic
Places. A burial place for both Union and
Confederate soldiers. 2,759 markers of Union
soldiers read “unknown”. One is marked
“Confederate Spy.” The walkway through the
grounds is lined with markers inscribed with
verses from the famous poem “Bivouac of
the Dead.” Soldiers from nearly every war are
buried here. The grounds of the cemetery
were purchased by the President, pursuant
to an act of Congress in 1862. The cemetery
was formally dedicated in 1864. A beautiful monument towers majestically from the
center of the grounds, which was donated
by the State of Illinois and erected in 1874.
The Saturday before each Memorial Day an
elaborate service is held here. The newly renovated Caretakers Lodge at the Mound City
National Cemetery provides Civil War history
and area information.

The bell was used as a lead off bell for the
Mississippi Squadron stationed here at the
Marine ways during the Civil War. A war trophy, the bell was also used as a school bell.

ships were built in these shipyards in 1862,

Civil War by the Sisters of The Holy Cross.

John A. Logan and his family through the

a walking trail (with interpretive signposts)
on the grounds that passes by Logan’s birthplace, now an archaeological site, and the

The Concord Cemetery has a four-story high
monument built in 1933 for E.B. Gore. A perfect pyramid stretches skyward topped by a
lead ball.

On the National Register of Historic Places,
step back in time to Civil War days when
“pig-iron” was smelted in the first charcoal-fired iron furnace in Illinois. Iron ore
mined from the nearby hills was mixed with
charcoal and smelted down to "pigs." These
were then shipped to Mounds during the
Civil War and were used in constructing the
Union ironclad boats used to keep the rivers
clear during the Civil War.

Indians were responsible for the outline of
the buffalo on the side of the sandstone cliff.
The trail to the rock passes through a beautiful forest dominated by beech and sugar
maple trees. In the spring, thousands of wildflowers cover the forest floor.
Trigg Tower

This is one of the last remaining fire watch
towers in Southernmost Illinois. The area
around the tower has extensive hiker/equestrian trails and numerous country roads for

TAMMS
The Old Depot

Built in the 1890s for the Chicago and Eastern
Illinois Railroad, the uniquely designed Old
Depot has been restored as a museum, and
city hall and is listed on the National Register
FORT MASSAC
Massac County
Intrepid travelers to Southernmost Illinois
won’t want to pass through without visiting
the lush scenery and rich history abundant
at Fort Massac State Park. The park, established in 1908 and the oldest of its kind in
Illinois, offers a bounty of outdoor entertainment from picnicking, camping and hiking, to hunting and fishing. Fort Massac also
gives visitors a unique look back into the
history of the land and its people dating
back to the first military encampment in the
area, the French-built Fort De La’Ascension
constructed in 1757, and beyond.
The fort was renamed Massiac after a
French diplomat. Eventually the British would
claim the area, thus providing the backdrop
for Colonel George Rogers Clark’s landmark
victory in 1778 in which he took the territory for the United States. A statue of Clark still
stands at the site today as the Colonel looks
our over the mighty Ohio River.
A replica of an 1802 American fort now
stands near the site of the original fort. (The
current replica replaces one constructed in
the 1970s but torn down in 2000.) The current fort, nestled near the bank of the Ohio,
takes visitors back to an era when pioneer
life was dominant and the United States
was in its infancy.
Each year over one hundred thousand
visitors flock to the park for the annual
Fort Massac Encampment. Reenactors from
across the country converge to replicate
life in early post-revolutionary America.
Dressed in the garb of the day and living without technological advantage, these
weekend time travelers sell food cooked
over campfires as well as a wide variety of
handmade crafts and goods. The day’s festivities climax in elaborate recreations of
historical battles in which reenactors, using
muskets and cannons equipped with pyrotechnic effects, engage in mock combat
at the fort.
Fort Massac State Park also offers covered picnic shelters, facilities for vehicular campsites, traditional camping, hiking
trails and some hunting access. A public boat ramp provides anglers access to
ample bullhead, catfish, crappie, drum and

Thebes Courthouse

A hand-hewn stone courthouse built in 1845
atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi
River Folklore indicates that Abraham
Lincoln, riding circuit, practiced law here.
Dred Scott, a slave whose Supreme Court
decision advanced black rights, was given
overnight housing in the courthouse jail.
The building was used as a Baptist church
back in 1879 and then as a school. Open
by chance or tours may be arranged with

Shiloh Baptist Church
Rt 51; 2 miles west of Villa Ridge
Historical church formed in 1817, one year
before Illinois became a state. The congregation built a log structure in 1820 which was
used for church services and a school. The
existing structure was built in 1869 and is
still in use today. Many of the early settlers of
Pulaski County are laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
