he allure of Venice is hard to describe. The commonly known facts make
it unusual, of course. A city built on more than one hundred small islands, packed
with innumerable narrow, mazelike alleys and small squares, it looks across a lagoon to
the Adriatic Sea. Its palazzi and piazzi seem to float on and sometimes under, the water. There are no cars, no highways, just canals and the legendary gondole. Based on
quaint and quirky qualities alone, Venice would stand out among urban habitats.
But the true magic of Venice comes from a far deeper place. The Most Serene Republic of
CELTIC INHERITANCE

Venice spans a long stretch of history from pre-Roman times to the present day. It was, for
centuries, the dominant trading power in the Mediterranean. One of its most famous inhabitants, Marco Polo, helped establish it as a western terminus of the Silk Road, the trade route to
the Orient. Its architecture reflects a merging of Byzantine and Moorish influences along with
a healthy dose of Gothic and Renaissance finery.
The name of Venice is also associated with the most refined of high art. The city lent its
name to the Venetian school of painting and masters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese
all painted here. The writings of Casanova would set Venice as the favored locale for many
subsequent literary efforts while composers, such as Willaert, and Gabrieli — both represented
in this year’s Revels — a nd later, Vivaldi added to the cultural heritage of the city.
There were playwrights, too. The comedic writer Ruzante, known for somewhat crude rustic
humor hailed from Venice, as did the two Carlos, Gozzi and Goldoni, who based their work
on the scenarii and stock characters of the earthy Commedia dell’Arte tradition. Venice was
indeed a meeting place of high and low art.
And that is where the rich history of Venice intersects with our Christmas Revels. We’ve

created a fanciful narrative, set in 1620 when the Republic, perhaps worn from years of fighting to maintain political and economic dominance in the Mediterranean, was settling into
its serenity. While Spain was perceived as a threat and a rival, no military peril ever materialized. And although no evidence suggests that he ever indulged in the activities we suggest,
the Doge in that era was Antonio Priuli. That much is true. A troupe of Commedians, and a
band of dancers — emigrants of yore foreshadowing emigrants of today — arrive in the Piazza San Marco. That much is plausible. Then they all meet on the Solstice, and the fun begins.
That much . . . is Revels.

By Adrian Willaert (c. 1490 – 1562), a Netherlandish composer of the
Renaissance and founder of the Venetian School. He was one of the most
representative members of the generation of northern composers who moved
to Italy and transplanted the polyphonic Franco-Flemish style there.
This lady always makes fun of me
when we pass in the street.
The silly flirt, the foolish lady, can only laugh,
ha ha ha, let’s all laugh to make her happy.

With lyrics dating to the 13th Century, this hymn, composed
by John Francis Wade, is a perennial favorite.

5. O che di bon echo
By Orlando di Lasso ( c. 1532 – 1594) , a Franco-Flemish composer of the late
Renaissance, at home in many different compositional styles. He is today
considered to be one of the most famous and influential musicians in Europe
at the end of the 16th century. He wrote over 2000 compositions in several
languages, many in Italian. The echo song is a witty use of double choir, with
one choir imitating the first. The English words here are fashioned by Fred Goff.

6. Ecco mormorar l’onde
By Claudio Monteverde , an Italian composer who wrote in the transitional
time between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He wrote some of
the earliest operas, and some of the most beautiful madrigals we have in
Italian. He worked in San Marco in Venice by 1613 and lived there until his
death. The lyrics of this song are an appreciation of the beauty of nature.

The Tarantella dance is named after the town of Taranto on the “heel”
of the Italian peninsula. Its energetic movements are rumored to be a
way of countering the effects of a toxic spider bite. It is a form of dance
that remains popular at Italian celebrations to the present day.

11. Contraponta Bestiale alla mente
Adriano Banchieri (1568-1634) was an Italian composer, music theorist, organist
and poet of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. He was one of
the developers of a form called madrigal comedy — unstaged but dramatic
collections of madrigals which, when sung consecutively, told a story.
The Contraponta Bestiale is written in basically a nonsensical
language, with animal sounds written into the counterpoint.

12. The Pipers’ Carol (Quando Nascente Ninno)
The southern Italian bagpipes known as zampogne have been traditionally
played by shepherds, who come into the villages during the Christmas
season. Because of the striking resemblance to Handel’s “He Shall
Feed His Flock Like A Shepherd,” from his Messiah, it is tempting
to speculate that he heard this melody — and the characteristic
harmony of parallel thirds — during his visit to Naples in 1708.

Our Corrente is the modern dance of 1620. It is a transitional

court dances. It is held to be the precursor of the Minuet.

The 2015 May Day Soirée
Many friends contributed to a truly magical spring evening
at our May Day Soirée. A Venetian Gala and Masquerade Ball. This annual
event is a cornerstone of our seasonal celebrations of community and a major
fundraising event to benefit the programs of California Revels. We are deeply
indebted to the continuing support of Dr. Joel Parrott and the Oakland Zoo.
