Baldwin High School Presents Hello Dolly!
www.baldwinschools.org Baldwin High School Presents Hello Dolly! O ver 150 Baldwin High School students participated in the delightful rendition of Hello Dolly! from November 20-22, coordinated by Secondary Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts Deepak Marwah. The students received their cues from director Mary Truelson, vocal director Kristine Simko, musical conductor Kimberly Roof, technical director Scott Peritz, art director Philip Zirkuli, and choreographer Ann Marie Lupo. The sets were constructed by the Stagecraft class under direction of Scott Peritz and Anthony DeAngelis and managed seamlessly by the stage crew (“Krough”). The period costumes were designed by Barbara Kirby. The musical, based on the book by Michael Stewart and play The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, is best remembered in the words and music by Jerry Herman in the Broadway play with Carol Channing and movie with Barbra Streisand. Baldwin High School’s production starred Ashley Mayers as Dolly Gallagher Levi, Kaedon Campbell as Horace Vandergelder, Audrey Wilson as Irene Molloy, Daelynn Jorif as Minnie Fay, and Malik Somers and Johnathan Fulcher as comedic sidekicks Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker. They were joined by an ensemble cast belting out all the classic songs from “It Takes a Woman” to “Before the Parade Passes By” and “Hello Dolly” in the grand finale. Baldwin Public Schools Baldwin Takes on the Common Core and More Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shari Camhi facilitated professional development for administrators The Parent Academy Workshop on the Go Math! program was packed with parents. During the fall, Baldwin School District offered training for both staff and parents on the Common Core Curriculum Standards and the new K-5 math program Go Math!, which aligns with the standards. In October, approximately 150 parents turned out for the Parent Academy Workshop, sponsored by the district and the Baldwin Council of PTAs, where educational consultant Melissa Pagano presented the components of Go Math!, which encourages active learning to solve and explain math. This was followed by more math strategies for parents of students in grades 3-5 at the Districtwide Parent Workshop at Steele in November and a Parent University program in December. There will be a Parent University program for parents of students in K-2 on January 27 and a Districtwide Parent Workshop in the spring. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shari L. Camhi has also started a series of professional development programs for district administrators. At the first meeting in October, they worked on a deepening understanding of the rubric for the Danielson Framework for Teaching that correlates with the Common Core. Baldwin’s teaching practices focus on five pillars of instruction: differentiation, inquiry, Teaching for Understanding, Understanding by Design, and social/emotional learning. At the Superintendent’s Conference Day in November, staff participated in a variety of workshops, including ones on Go Math!, elementary writing, and Response to Intervention (RtI), and out-of-district trips such as to Brookhaven Lab, Cradle of Aviation, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Community Coalition and Input Baldwin Teacher Center Course Offerings The Baldwin Teacher Center offers many courses and workshops for educators with inservice and graduate credits. Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursday after school and Saturday mornings at various Baldwin locations. Please email TeacherCenter@ baldwinschools.org for more information and a copy of the BTC course catalog and newsletter. Over the last year, leaders of the key stakeholder groups in Baldwin have formed the Community Coalition of Baldwin, and Dr. Camhi has been assisting the coalition in creating a strategic action plan to work together to enrich the economic, academic and social life in Baldwin. The coalition agreed on four goals: to create a thriving downtown, aspire to academic success, foster a sense of family in the community, and communicate and promote Baldwin success stories. These goals were presented at the Community Input Meeting, where residents participated in a giant brainstorming session. The ideas generated from the meeting were analyzed by the coalition to set short-, medium-, and long-term actionable projects that will be publicized soon.
