Mahatma Gandhi once said about his struggle for freedom and independence in India, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you—and then you win!” That same process first occurred in this week’s Torah portion. Moses is starting his struggle against Pharaoh, who ignored him first by saying, “I do not know this God. Who is He that I should listen to His voice?” The second time Moses shows up, he turns his staff into a snake. Yet Pharaoh is not impressed and calls in his own sorcerers to do the same, dismissing the miracle with a laugh. After the Jews leave Egypt, Pharaoh takes his mighty army and chases the Jews down to the Red Sea, leaving them nowhere to go and challenging them to fight. And then we win! God miraculously splits the sea for the Jews, and all of Pharaoh’s mighty army drowns so we could prevail.
