davening with us today.
Special welcome to Dr. Raphael Jospe, our scholar-inresidence this week.
Dr. Jospe is professor of Jewish philosophy at Ariel
University, and previously taught at Bar Ilan
University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
He received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University, and
is the author of 8 books in Jewish philosophy (3 in
Hebrew, 5 in English), and the editor of 10 books. He
also served as editor of the Jewish philosophy division
of the Encyclopaedia Judaica (2nd edition), and is
editor of Jewish philosophy for the new
Encyclopaedia Hebraica. His inter-religious activities
have included lecturing at the Vatican for the Israeli
Foreign Ministry and at the World Council of
Churches. He and his wife live in Jerusalem and have
seven children; Dr. Jospe is a major in the Israeli
Defense Forces (reserves).

Chabad Northern Colorado in Fort Collins is looking
for a kosher supervisor (Mashgiach or Mashgicha) to
run the Kosher meal plan at CSU. Person must be able
to prepare meals. Job begins August 2015 and runs
until May 2016. Job entails preparing lunch and
dinner Monday-Thursday. Work day begins at 11 AM
or noon until 7 PM. Benefts include payment for
travel time, CSU health plan and CSU retirement plan.

Condolences
Condolences to Rabbi Yaakov and Chaya Meyer and
family upon the passing of Rabbi Meyer's father, Rudi
Meyer. Friday morning, Shacharit will be at 7:30 AM
at the Meyer home, and Sunday morning, Shacharit
will be at 8 AM. May his memory be for a blessing.
From The Rabbi's Desk
This week’s ‫ הפטרה‬tells the story of the
‫ ארבעה אנשים מצורעים‬- the four men
stricken with ‫ צרעת‬who are forced to live
outside of the city of ‫ שמרון‬at the time
that the city was under siege by ‫ארם‬.
Facing the possibility of starvation,
stranded between the city and the enemy, they are
forced to decide whether to re-enter ‫שמרון‬,try to
partake in what little food they have left and extend
their life a bit, or enter the enemy camp where they
may be killed instantly, but they also may be taken as
slaves and be fed. They decide to approach the
enemy camp. Without ruining the ending, things turn
out for the best.
The Talmud (‫ )עבודה זרה דף כז עמוד ב‬notes that the
fact that the men in question were allowed to risk
their lives and comments ‫ לחיי שעה לא חיישינן‬- we are
not concerned with the possibility of living a short
period of time. One cannot read the Talmud as saying
that even one moment of life is irrelevant. Rather, Rav
Moshe Feinstein ( ‫)אגרות משה חלק יו"ד ג סימן לו‬
explains this to mean that if a person is faced with a
short time to live but can take steps that could either
extend their life signifcantly or kill them instantly
(e.g. a risky surgery), they have a right to take that
risk, even though they may be shortening their life.

Life presents us all with ups and downs, happy times
and diffcult times. We must remember, even in the
darkest of days, that life, every moment, is a blessing
that we should appreciate and preserve, and is always
better than the alternative.

Spring Shiurim at Merkaz—The three part series for
men, led by Rabbi Aharon Boruch Kagan, is entitled
Lomdus on the Parsha, and takes place Wednesday,
May 13th, Thursday, May 21st, and Wednesday, May
27th. The three part series for women, led by Mrs.
Rivka Gross, is entitled, The Secret of the Aishes Chayil,
and takes place Tuesdays, May 5th, May 12th, and May
19th. All shiurim take place at Merkaz, 295 South
Locust St, 8-9 PM
Shabbat Shiur
The Shabbat Shiur is given by Dr. Jospe on the topic
The Bible and Philosophy: The Book of Job as a Biblical
Guide of the Perplexed one hour before Mincha.
