Rare Air Rifles - Sniper Rifle & Snake Pistols
Top Kramer's Winter 2015 Auction
Article & Photos by KramerSales
Buyers from across the Midwest filled the Kramer Auction
Gallery in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on a warm day this past January
24th for their 2015 Winter Firearms auction. A great cross section of
firearms, specifically air rifles to antique arms is what brought them out
in mass that day.

Great Crowd, Great Buys, at 13th Annual Spring Edition of
A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show in Arthur, Illinois
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
The history-rich town of Arthur, Illinois once again hosted what’s become
one of the most popular country antiques events in the Midwest: the Thirteenth
Annual A Gathering on the Prairie Spring Antiques Show. Located in the middle of
Illinois’ Amish Country, Arthur is a perfect place for the show, whose near-fifty dealers all specialize in American primitive & country antiques. The quiet town is anything
but on the first Saturday of each March, when the one-day event is always held. In fact
there’s something to do almost any weekend in Arthur, which draws more than a hundred-thousand visitors each year to its many shows and festivals.

Out & About
Time to get out the patio furniture and lawn mower
and put away the snowblower. I already feel
overwhelmed at my summer to do list and have
yet to get started. We have so much to finish in
our back yard. My parents never warned me that
in your middle age, you get less motived to
accomplish those to do lists. They always made it seem so possible.
I just always feel that there are not enough days in the weekend to get it
all done by the end of summer and still get to enjoy the summer.
Well, there is, and that time is spent at auctions and shows, filling our
homes and porches with nice antiques and our garages with the tools to
accomplish those to do lists. Remember to put that chair in the trunk,
so you have a place to sit when the outdoor auctions start.

Arthur, Illinois’ A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show:
The One That Started it All!
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
I don’t think anyone in the antiques trade can deny that in the last thirteen years,
the spring and autumn Arthur, Illinois Antiques Weekends have firmly established
themselves as one of the Midwest’s finest antiques traditions. And the show that
started all the fuss was the A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show, founded back
in 2003.
Area antiques dealer Donna Kibler now runs the event. She was one of those dealers who displayed at the very first A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show. “I think
we had around two dozen dealers at that inaugural show” Donna told me, “and many
of them have returned to every show since.” The show has more than doubled in size
over the years, and now boasts around fifty dealers from eight states.
The picturesque town of Arthur is natural location for the country & primitivesthemed show. Right in the heart of central Illinois’ Amish Country, Arthur’s 2,200
citizens are surrounded by the oldest and largest Amish settlement in the state, founded in the 1860s and now numbering nearly 5,000 strong. It was a busy Saturday
indeed in Arthur on the day of the show, with much of the traffic headed to the Otto
Center, host of the A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show.
Indiana’s The Old Shed was among the dealers. They brought a wide variety of
classic American country furnishings and artifacts of daily life. I found a wonderful
1820s walnut dry sink ($2,095) there, with a fancy “fish tail” apron & sporting its
original mustard paint. Also at The Old Shed: a wonderful New England mule chest
At Pigeon Hollow Farm
Antiques hung this

price $325. The
well-loved rocking
horse above was
priced at $139.

in a pristine faux-grain finish, asking price $1,700.
Period pottery more your thing? Look no farther than Stephen F. Rhodes Antiques,
whose booth was filled with decorated stoneware to spare. And of course there was
exceptional folk art all over the show, from an intriguing carved wood “blue man”
figure at Outback Antiques to a nice group of English scrimshaw horn cups at
Kracker Barrel Antiques. In fact, you’ll find exhibitors here with every category of
country & primitives, from textiles and tools to lighting, toys, and more.
This Spring Antiques Weekend in Arthur was just the beginning of their 2015
events. May brings the Amish Country Quilt Show, followed by the MoultrieDouglas Combined County Fair in July. And tens of thousands of visitors come each
Labor Day Weekend for the Amish Country Cheese Festival. Just visit www.illinoisamishcountry.com for all the details of those events and more.
The A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show has been so successful that it has
spawned several other area antiques shows, all taking place on the same weekend.
And don’t worry if you missed this spring edition of the show: there’s a fall
Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show as well, right here at the Otto Center in
Arthur this November 14th - the anchor show to the town’s Autumn Antiques
Weekend. When you go to their website, www.agatheringontheprairie.com, be sure
to join their email notification list so you won’t forget. And as always, keep an eye
out for all of the A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Shows in the Auction Action

The fascinating collectibles in Paper Empires: 100 Years of German Paper Soldiers (1845 – 1945) by Rafael de Francisco Lopez brought
history to life for a generation of children can can do the same now.
These paper cut-outs developed from toys into a historically important reflection on the German military and social classes from the early
nineteenth to the early twentieth century, culminating in their proliferation during the rise and reign of the Third Reich. They make it possible
to take a tour through German military and political history, from the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt in 1806 right up to the Maginot Line in 1940.
These German paper soldiers, or papiersoldaten zum ausschneiden are, without a doubt, unique visual images that, nowadays, are similar to
archeological artifacts, which are very hard to find on the market. Even today, the number of preserved or catalogued images in German
museums is very small, so this book, showing thousands of figures in 173 color images, is a an essential collection.

Article by Bob Zurko (Zurko Midwest Promotions)
“It's back by popular demand and Sold-Out! Stated Bob Zurko promoter of
Chicagoland's NATIONAL CIVIL WAR SHOW AND MILITARY EXTRAVAGANZA, at the Du Page County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois
1000's of Fabulous Artifacts from the “Great Civil War” of our Country will
be offered for sale to collectors and connoisseurs. Over 200 tables of vintage
firearms, medals, uniforms, books, ribbons, tokens, historical autographs, coins, tintypes, Civil War era jewelry, drums, photos and much more, includes military collectibles up to WWII.
In addition to the 1000's of Civil War items for sale and investment there
will be Native American artifacts, plus Revolutionary and Spanish American War
memorabilia for sale and much more!
The history of America's rich heritage can be viewed on the 100's of tables
of historical artifacts for sale.
A Special Feature this year will be the “BATTLEFIELD BALLADEERS”
whose mission is to perform the songs and music of the American Civil War. The
repertoire consists of the patriotic, sentimental, and comic songs of the period along
with minstrel favorites and the melodies of Stephen Foster. Unamplified acoustic
instruments performed by a variety of personnel in museum quality uniforms bring
to life the sounds of the Blue and Gray for all ages.

WWII Sniper Rifle Brings $3,650 at
Kramer’s Winter 2015 Firearms Auction
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
The highest grossing sale of the day was a fine original US WWII 03-A4
Sniper Rifle with original M73B1 rifle scope. This rifle made another
trip "across the pond" after selling to a phone bidder from England for
$3,650, (Not sure how much that is in pounds!) Next in line that
day was a 6`` Nickel plated Python Revolver, this gun was lightly
used but with original box. This gun took a long trip as well selling to
an Internet buyer from Alaska after demanding $2,990. A 6`` Blued
Python showed some honest use but still sold strong at $1,650
used hard & put away wet! This
gun certainly fit that descriptions
& still demanded $925

A few other noteworthy items included a Colt marked shoulder stock
for a 1911 style 45 pistol. This possible proto-type stock was in
big demand with internet bidders selling just shy of $2,000 for
$1,955. A documented Walter PPK in 22 cal which was previously owned by a US ambassador “Jack Olson” was interesting
to numerous buyers & ultimately settled at $1,815. A beautiful pair
of Mike Borret flying teal decoys soared to $800.
A rare original Newton Rifle mfg. in Buffalo New York was a popular item as well. In fine original condition, sporting a rare Bolt
peep sight & chambered in the flagship 256 Newton caliber. It
traded just shy of $3,000 at 2,990.

The 21st Annual World's Fair Memorabilia Show
Article by Rick Rann
The 1933/34 World's Fair returns to
Chicagoland on March 29th. The
hours are 10am to 4pm and it is being
held at the Elk Grove Holiday Inn,
1000 Busse Road (Rt. 83 and
Landmeier Rd.) in Elk Grove
Village, Illinois. Admission is $6,
$5 for seniors over 64.
Early 9am Preview
admission is $20.
Collectors
and dealers will meet to
buy, sell and trade
items related
to
World's Fairs from 1876 to the present. The main
focus will be on the 1933/34 Chicago World's Fair.
This year our show celebrates the 80th anniversary
of the 1933 World’s Fair. There will also be items
from the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition and
other Chicago related ephemera. There will be
some items from other World's Fairs including:
1904 St. Louis, 1939-40 New York, 1962 Seattle,
1964-65 New York, Expo '67 and most other World’s Fairs.
There will be over 20 tables of World's Fair items for
sale! Though there are few traces left in the area where the fair
took place - between Roosevelt Road and 39th Street along the
lakefront including the area where Meigs Field was located (now
Northerly Island Park) - Rick Rann and Bob Conidi are bringing the
fair back to Chicago at this show!
There will be continuous showings of home movies and
newsreels on video from
the 1933/34 Chicago World’s Fair. There will be a special display of 1933 World's Fair memorabilia. World's
Fair collectors and fans of the fair are invited to come
and relive one of the brightest moments in Chicago's history. (Two of the stars on Chicago's flag commemorate
the 1893 and 1933/34 Fairs!)
For info contact: Rick Rann, PO
Box 877, Oak Park, IL 60303 708-4427907 or Bob Conidi at (630) 467-0100. Or
check our website for updates:
www.worldsfairshow.com or

[email protected].
Over 39,000,000 people attended
Chicago's second World's Fair during 1933
and 1934. (The first being the Columbian
Exposition held in 1893.) The theme "A Century of
Progress" referred to the one hundred year period from
the founding of Chicago in 1833, to the year of the fair,
1933. One of the guiding principles of the fair was
"Progress Through Science". Many companies had
working factories at the fair, where people could see the products
being produced. Some of the items actually produced on the fairgrounds included Firestone tires, White Owl Cigars, Hiram Walker
Whiskey (at the 1934 fair, as Prohibition ended at the end of 1933),
Wonder Bread, and even Chevrolet automobiles.
The signature attraction of the fair was the Sky Ride.
The Sky Ride had two observation platform towers which were
628 feet high (64 stories high). These platforms were taller than
any building in Chicago at the time. Visitors could pay 50 cents
and either go to the observation deck at the top
of the towers (and see up to four states on a
clear day) or ride in one of twelve double
decked rocket cars at the 219 foot level. Each
of the rocket cars held 36 passengers and
traveled back and forth over a third of a mile
over the fairgrounds.
The fair had many memorable buildings and attractions including the Sky Ride,
Havoline's 227 foot tall thermometer tower
(with neon tubing showing the current temperatures to fairgoers) and the Travel and
Transport Building with a suspended roof. It
is amazing that this fair was privately financed
at the height of the Depression and was one of
the few World's Fairs to make a profit! When the fair’s accounts
were settled in 1935 the profits were donated to area museums and
some of the exhibits from the Fair were moved to area museums.
There are few traces left in the area where the fair took
place - between Roosevelt Road and 39th Street along the lakefront
including the area where Meigs Field was located (now Northerly
Island Park). The Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, the
Field Museum and Soldier Field all pre-dated the 1933-34 World’s
Fair, but were incorporated into the plan of the Fair. These landmarks were incorporated into the Museum Campus by Mayor
Daley in the 1990s.
65th Oregon, Illinois Oregon Woman’s Club Antique Show
Article & photos by Ron Bry
(Oregon Woman’s Club)
The Oregon Woman's Club is proud to
announce their 65th annual antique show.
Many changes have taken place during the past sixty+
years developing one of the
premier antique shows
in Northern Illinois. The Oregon Woman's Club, a
member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs,
sponsors this show as a major fund raising event and
uses the proceeds to help fund various community projects and charities.
As in past years, the show will be held at the
Blackhawk Center Sports Arena, located on the Oregon
public school campus. The facility offers ample parking, handicap accessibility and a huge area for our 52
antique dealers from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana
& Texas to display their merchandise for sale. Quality
antiques from the early 1800's through the retro era of
the 1950's includes all areas of collecting - furniture,
glass, china, pottery, toys, primitives, textiles, jewelry,
dolls, silver, decorator items and more. There will be
items for all collecting tastes and budgets, for both the
new and advanced collector. We like to think of it as
'comfort food for the eyes'. Visit our Wisconsin dealers: Indian Creek Antiques, Old Glory Antiques,
Victorian House Antiques, Sunshine Antiques, Circa,
Blackwolf Antiques, Gwen LeFavre Antiques, Raven's
Nest & The Paddle Horse as well as all the others.
