March 24, 2015 Vol. 20 No. 34 News Periodical Mailed on March 18 Rare Air Rifles - Sniper Rifle & Snake Pistols Top Kramer's Winter 2015 Auction Article & Photos by KramerSales Buyers from across the Midwest filled the Kramer Auction Gallery in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on a warm day this past January 24th for their 2015 Winter Firearms auction. A great cross section of firearms, specifically air rifles to antique arms is what brought them out in mass that day. Continued on page 17 US WWII 03-A4 sniper rifle with original M73B1 rifle scope sold for $3,650. 6” nickel plated Python revolver with original box sold for $2,990. Great Crowd, Great Buys, at 13th Annual Spring Edition of A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show in Arthur, Illinois Article & photos by Brian Maloney The history-rich town of Arthur, Illinois once again hosted what’s become one of the most popular country antiques events in the Midwest: the Thirteenth Annual A Gathering on the Prairie Spring Antiques Show. Located in the middle of Illinois’ Amish Country, Arthur is a perfect place for the show, whose near-fifty dealers all specialize in American primitive & country antiques. The quiet town is anything but on the first Saturday of each March, when the one-day event is always held. In fact there’s something to do almost any weekend in Arthur, which draws more than a hundred-thousand visitors each year to its many shows and festivals. Continued on pages 6, 7 & 8 At River Cabin Antiques, this country dining table (30” x 42”) in a faded blue finish was priced at $465, the set of four matching splint-seat chairs at $145. 573-896-5678 Great painted country furnishing awaited at The Old Shed, my favorite this circa 1820’s walnut dry sink (50” in width) in its original mustard paint & with a fancy “fish tail” apron - $2,095. 765-883-8323 Great look to this unusual 19th century herb-drying rack from Colleen Frese Antiques, with four drawers below and shelf above, $675. 319-360-4301 At Hen’s Nest Primitives sat this funky sheet-iron weathervane made from old car parts & depicting a hunter taking his shot, $235. 574-261-5307 Two very-different folk art wooden figures from Outback Antiques: the 4’-tall Uncle Sam tobacco store figure priced at $899, the unusual Peoria-found “Blue Man” measuring 32” in height and priced at $235. 217-232-2584 2 A An nt tiiq qu ues es Welcome Visitors! I already feel overwhelmed at my summer to do list and have yet to get started. We have so much to finish in our back yard. My parents never warned me that in your middle age, you get less motived to accomplish those to do lists. They always made it seem so possible. I just always feel that there are not enough days in the weekend to get it all done by the end of summer and still get to enjoy the summer. Well, there is, and that time is spent at auctions and shows, filling our homes and porches with nice antiques and our garages with the tools to accomplish those to do lists. Remember to put that chair in the trunk, so you have a place to sit when the outdoor auctions start. Always On Time! 6 Arthur, Illinois’ A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show: The One That Started it All! Article & photos by Brian Maloney I don’t think anyone in the antiques trade can deny that in the last thirteen years, the spring and autumn Arthur, Illinois Antiques Weekends have firmly established themselves as one of the Midwest’s finest antiques traditions. And the show that started all the fuss was the A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show, founded back in 2003. Area antiques dealer Donna Kibler now runs the event. She was one of those dealers who displayed at the very first A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show. “I think we had around two dozen dealers at that inaugural show” Donna told me, “and many of them have returned to every show since.” The show has more than doubled in size over the years, and now boasts around fifty dealers from eight states. The picturesque town of Arthur is natural location for the country & primitivesthemed show. Right in the heart of central Illinois’ Amish Country, Arthur’s 2,200 citizens are surrounded by the oldest and largest Amish settlement in the state, founded in the 1860s and now numbering nearly 5,000 strong. It was a busy Saturday indeed in Arthur on the day of the show, with much of the traffic headed to the Otto Center, host of the A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show. Indiana’s The Old Shed was among the dealers. They brought a wide variety of classic American country furnishings and artifacts of daily life. I found a wonderful 1820s walnut dry sink ($2,095) there, with a fancy “fish tail” apron & sporting its original mustard paint. Also at The Old Shed: a wonderful New England mule chest At Pigeon Hollow Farm Antiques hung this unusual tin cabinet of seven drawers, asking price $325. The well-loved rocking horse above was priced at $139. 815-784-5983 in a pristine faux-grain finish, asking price $1,700. Period pottery more your thing? Look no farther than Stephen F. Rhodes Antiques, whose booth was filled with decorated stoneware to spare. And of course there was exceptional folk art all over the show, from an intriguing carved wood “blue man” figure at Outback Antiques to a nice group of English scrimshaw horn cups at Kracker Barrel Antiques. In fact, you’ll find exhibitors here with every category of country & primitives, from textiles and tools to lighting, toys, and more. This Spring Antiques Weekend in Arthur was just the beginning of their 2015 events. May brings the Amish Country Quilt Show, followed by the MoultrieDouglas Combined County Fair in July. And tens of thousands of visitors come each Labor Day Weekend for the Amish Country Cheese Festival. Just visit www.illinoisamishcountry.com for all the details of those events and more. The A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show has been so successful that it has spawned several other area antiques shows, all taking place on the same weekend. And don’t worry if you missed this spring edition of the show: there’s a fall Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show as well, right here at the Otto Center in Arthur this November 14th - the anchor show to the town’s Autumn Antiques Weekend. When you go to their website, www.agatheringontheprairie.com, be sure to join their email notification list so you won’t forget. And as always, keep an eye out for all of the A Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Shows in the Auction Action Antique News! Two 19th century oddities from Gwen S. Lefevre Antiques: the leather fire brigade bucket in great original paint priced at $595, the 20” wooden vegetable duster in old mustard paint at $69. 715-442-2086 Two birdthemed crocks from stoneware specialist Stephen F. Rhodes: the fourgallon F. B. Norton example priced at $1,195, the two-gallon Binghamton, NY version at $495. 217-356-4612 My country pottery favorite at Pigeon Hollow Farm Antiques: this “sewer tile” log measuring 17” tall and complete with lid - $275. 815-784-5983 Missouri’s River Cabin Antiques has been displaying here since the inaugural Gathering on the Prairie Antiques Show fourteen years ago. Their diverse inventory ranged from a wonderful black Americana bottle doll ($295) to an early 17th century Latin bible that sold as I visited their booth. 573-896-5678 Hoosier exhibitor Bill Hopper of Red Rooster Two Antiques poses with an early Cherry Smash syrup dispenser made from a (probably South Carolina) beehive-style pottery jug - $325. 812-882-6378 There were lots of lookers at this two-piece corner cupboard displayed by Pigeon Hollow Farm Antiques, scraped back to an old blue surface and priced at $2,800 815-784-5983 In a corner of River Cabin Antiques’ display sat this adorable child’s cupboard ($265) filled with not-so-scary vintage Halloween Jack-olanterns. 573-896-5678 7 Continued on page 8 Sold signs hung on both this hanging cupboard and stave churn at Hedge Apple primitives, but they still had this 32” red-washed dry sink for sale, price tag $925. 217 620-8983 At The Old Shed, this 1820s Ohio pantry cupboard in its original deep brown finish (52” x 62”, $900) supported a raised panel cupboard in faded salmon Shoppers found a paint wonderful array of $575. 765country stoneware in 883-8323 Stephen F. Rhodes’ display, including this Horse Shoe Snuff crock, asking price $395. 217-356-4612 Folk art landscape paintings at Hen’s Nest Primitives started at only $65! 574-261-5307 I found this classic New England mule chest at The Old Shed, sporting its original fauxCountry clasmahogany finish & priced at sics took all forms $1,700. Above it hung an early at Carriage House portrait of a gentleman, asking Americana, from this pine bench/table price $975. 765-883-8323 ($725) to this funky early goat cart priced at $695. 217-972-7324 You could’ve picked from a table full of wooden spice cabinets at Ardon Antiques, who also came with colorful game boards like this early red & yellow checkerboard priced at $350. 847-381-9404 Best of the decorated stoneware from Stephen F. Rhodes: this whimsical twogallon jug sporting a standing bunny, price tag $3,900. 217-356-4612 At Outback Antiques a whole family of vintage Teddy bears (from $140) hitched a ride on a 36” folk art rocking horse priced at $198. 217-232-2584 This 48” Heath & Milligan Paints wooden sign displayed by Missouri Plain Folk was priced at $750, the well-worn 1930s Buddy L truck below it at $295. 573-620-5500 At Iowa’s T’s Antiques, a funky 3’-long Spotted Pig Farm wooden sign ($695) kept watch over a blue-enameled Little Eva toy stave priced at $850. 563-343-5693 Spring was in the air at the verybusy Acquired Taste Antiques, where shoppers found traditional country furnishings plus funky finds like these vintage “bubble seat” steel garden chairs priced at four for $395. 815-355-1746 In another corner of Missouri Plain Folk’s display, an unusual 32” x 44” hooked rug ($495) hung above a rustic wood bin in a faded blue finish - $395. 573-620-5500 8 Continued from pages 6 & 7 Highlights at Missouri’s Kracker Barrel Antiques included this colorful 1920s geometric quilt ($450) and 19th century portrait of a Midwestern lady, 24” x 30” and priced at $1,095. 573-263-3247 Two English scrimshawed horn cups from Kracker Barrel Antiques: the foxhunt-themed example priced at $385, the other depicting a horserace & priced at $465. 573-263-3247 Best of the English scrimshaw cups from Kracker Barrel Antiques: this unusual version featuring scenes around a farmstead & with hallmarked Sterling rim and monogram - $499. 573-263-3247 Jennifer Lesicko Antiques quickly sold this extra-rustic 8’ trestle table, and also offered this stencil-decorated, ironwheeled wooden wheelbarrow for $275. 618-939-5543 Shoppers found American country furniture of all sorts at Mary de Buhr American Antiques, my pick this period easy chair reupholstered in soft old gray blanket wool & priced at $2,900. 630-985-9449 At Colleen Frese Antiques sat a humongous wooden hornbeam, measuring 22” in diameter and priced at $389. 319-360-4301 We Benefit our Advertisers!! • Color photos are only $3 each! These paper cut-outs developed from toys into a historically important reflection on the German military and social classes from the early nineteenth to the early twentieth century, culminating in their proliferation during the rise and reign of the Third Reich. They make it possible to take a tour through German military and political history, from the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt in 1806 right up to the Maginot Line in 1940. These German paper soldiers, or papiersoldaten zum ausschneiden are, without a doubt, unique visual images that, nowadays, are similar to archeological artifacts, which are very hard to find on the market. Even today, the number of preserved or catalogued images in German museums is very small, so this book, showing thousands of figures in 173 color images, is a an essential collection. The hours are 10am to 4pm and it is being held at the Elk Grove Holiday Inn, 1000 Busse Road (Rt. 83 and Landmeier Rd.) in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Admission is $6, $5 for seniors over 64. Early 9am Preview admission is $20. Collectors and dealers will meet to buy, sell and trade items related to World's Fairs from 1876 to the present. The main focus will be on the 1933/34 Chicago World's Fair. This year our show celebrates the 80th anniversary of the 1933 World’s Fair. There will also be items from the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition and other Chicago related ephemera. There will be some items from other World's Fairs including: 1904 St. Louis, 1939-40 New York, 1962 Seattle, 1964-65 New York, Expo '67 and most other World’s Fairs. There will be over 20 tables of World's Fair items for sale! Though there are few traces left in the area where the fair took place - between Roosevelt Road and 39th Street along the lakefront including the area where Meigs Field was located (now Northerly Island Park) - Rick Rann and Bob Conidi are bringing the fair back to Chicago at this show! There will be continuous showings of home movies and newsreels on video from the 1933/34 Chicago World’s Fair. There will be a special display of 1933 World's Fair memorabilia. World's Fair collectors and fans of the fair are invited to come and relive one of the brightest moments in Chicago's history. (Two of the stars on Chicago's flag commemorate the 1893 and 1933/34 Fairs!) For info contact: Rick Rann, PO Box 877, Oak Park, IL 60303 708-4427907 or Bob Conidi at (630) 467-0100. Or check our website for updates: www.worldsfairshow.com or e-mail [email protected]. Over 39,000,000 people attended Chicago's second World's Fair during 1933 and 1934. (The first being the Columbian Exposition held in 1893.) The theme "A Century of Progress" referred to the one hundred year period from the founding of Chicago in 1833, to the year of the fair, 1933. One of the guiding principles of the fair was "Progress Through Science". Many companies had working factories at the fair, where people could see the products being produced. Some of the items actually produced on the fairgrounds included Firestone tires, White Owl Cigars, Hiram Walker Whiskey (at the 1934 fair, as Prohibition ended at the end of 1933), Wonder Bread, and even Chevrolet automobiles. The signature attraction of the fair was the Sky Ride. The Sky Ride had two observation platform towers which were 628 feet high (64 stories high). These platforms were taller than any building in Chicago at the time. Visitors could pay 50 cents and either go to the observation deck at the top of the towers (and see up to four states on a clear day) or ride in one of twelve double decked rocket cars at the 219 foot level. Each of the rocket cars held 36 passengers and traveled back and forth over a third of a mile over the fairgrounds. The fair had many memorable buildings and attractions including the Sky Ride, Havoline's 227 foot tall thermometer tower (with neon tubing showing the current temperatures to fairgoers) and the Travel and Transport Building with a suspended roof. It is amazing that this fair was privately financed at the height of the Depression and was one of the few World's Fairs to make a profit! When the fair’s accounts were settled in 1935 the profits were donated to area museums and some of the exhibits from the Fair were moved to area museums. There are few traces left in the area where the fair took place - between Roosevelt Road and 39th Street along the lakefront including the area where Meigs Field was located (now Northerly Island Park). The Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and Soldier Field all pre-dated the 1933-34 World’s Fair, but were incorporated into the plan of the Fair. These landmarks were incorporated into the Museum Campus by Mayor Daley in the 1990s. 65th Oregon, Illinois Oregon Woman’s Club Antique Show Article & photos by Ron Bry (Oregon Woman’s Club) The Oregon Woman's Club is proud to announce their 65th annual antique show.
