probably get up on my base,”
Mirabella said. “He got away in the
second period, so I knew that third
period was going to be crucial. It
proved the takedown was worth it,
especially the second, because he took
me down. He’s a big strong physical
kid. I knew my technique was going
to be important in that match.”
Mirabella’s technique worked out
very well when he clamped Will
Ferdinando (RP) with a cradle in
3:05 to claim the title. Cougar Nick
Ballas placed fifth with a 7-3, overtime win over Abdus Slater (P).
Cougar Tom DiGiovanni claimed
the 120-lb crown when he defeated
Carmine Boccellari (NP), 5-0.
DiGiovanni reached the finals with a
pair of pins. Raider Jack Cannon
placed fourth at 120-lbs.
At 106-lbs, Cougar Anthony
Capece, after winning his first two
bouts, was shocked in the title bout
when Chris Gural (RP) took him to
his back with a standing leg elevator
to record a fall in 1:04. Earlier, Capece
recorded a 7-0 decision and a 10-1
majority decision.
After losing his semifinal bout to
Summit’s Craig DeLaCruz (2014
126-lb NJSIAA champ), Cougar
Vince Concina placed third at 132lbs with a 6-1 decision over Devin
Jefferson (R). Raider Nadin Korkmaz
placed fifth at 113-lbs.
The final title bout of the evening
was a doozy between Raider JT Beirne
and Tyler Gazaway (NP) at 138-lbs.
Despite the low scoring in regulation, the bout was wild, especially
late in the third period. With a 1-1 tie,
the bout went into a third overtime
and Gazaway surprised Beirne with a
lateral drop to claim a 6-1 decision.
Cougar Dave Busch placed third at
138-lbs when he pinned Wyatt Bohm
in 3:21.

Indeed, the 2-8 Raiders came out
with an inspired defensive effort. Utilizing a shuffled starting lineup that
featured Nya Downing, Thabitha
Dwunfour and Micaiah Battle in the
frontcourt with defensive ace Caroline
Babis and freshman point guard
Brianna O’Brien in the backcourt,
the Raiders played a stubborn zone
that seemed to keep the Lions’ offense out of sync early.
But back-to-back steals and layups and a pair of free throws by
Cubbage broke open a 4-4 tie and
gave the Lions the 10-4 lead late in
the opening period.
The Raiders battled back and pulled
to within 16-15 after a lay-up by
Downing with 1:30 left in the half.
Once again however, Roselle Catholic answered with a quarter-ending
surge, scoring eight straight points,
including a 3-pointer by Cubbage
with :01 on the clock to build the 2415 lead at the break.
“I think we got tired out there tonight at different times in the game,”
said junior Caroline Babis. “Coach
Mammolite called time out when we
seemed to be wearing down, which
was good because it gave us a chance
to regroup and compete again. We
just couldn’t overcome those rough
patches.”
In the third quarter, Roselle Catholic began disrupting the Raider offense with a press defense, which led
to several turnovers. The Lions gradually built out to a 36-19 lead midway
through the period.
“Roselle Catholic had success
against us after made baskets when
we would try to pass the ball
inbounds,” said Coach Mammolite.

bouts, but the Raiders gathered more
bonus points to claim a 38-31 victory
in New Providence on January 14.

press and a zone press and we were
not identifying that very well. We
managed to get the ball into the
frontcourt pretty well, but we were
out of sync and it led to turnovers.”
The Raiders made one final push,
cutting the deficit to 36-25 during a 60 run capped by Battle’s lay-up with
a minute left in the third quarter. But
yet again, the Lions would answer.
This time they responded with a devastating 13-0 surge over the course of
the next three minutes that put the
game out of reach at 49-26 with just
under six minutes remaining.
“Roselle Catholic is a very athletic
team,” said Coach Mammolite. “They
play a fast-paced game. They are very
energetic. It takes a lot to slow down a
team like that. They are a top 10 ranked
team for a reason. They showed that
tonight. Honestly, all things considered, this was one of the better games
we’ve played this year. I think for most
of the game, we were able to slow
them down and make them work really hard on offense. I think the difference was that they capitalized during
some stretches where our girls were
clearly getting a little tired.”
Battle led the Raiders with 10
points. O’Brien and Downing each
added nine points. Laura Charros had
five points, while Babis and Myaysia
Taylor each had three points. Dolapo
Balogun and Tyffani McQueen each
netted 10 points for the Lady Lions.
“We’re a pretty young team overall,” said Babis. “We only have one
senior playing in our rotation. Once
we get things to finally start clicking,
it will all come together. I have always
felt like hard work overcomes talent. I
throw my body around out there for
that reason. If I’m not willing to do
whatever it takes to get the ball, then
you can’t expect others to do it.”

Blue Devil Boys Halt
Elizabeth Cagers, 56-32
The Westfield High School boys
basketball team had few offensive
dry spells in a 56-32 thrashing of the
Elizabeth Minutemen in Elizabeth on
January 15. Nearly every Blue Devil
got into the scoring act and were led
by Parker Hess with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Matt
LaCorte, who bucketed eight points,
including a pair of 3-pointers.
Sean Elliott and Owen Murray each
sank five points and Chris Boutsikaris
and Tim Norris each put in four points,
while Danny Mitchell, Nick Mele
and Pat McCormack each scored three
points. Jelani Pierre, Marius
Chenekan and Andrejs Rumpeters
each had two points and Mitch
Figueroa sank a free throw.

(24.98) was followed by teammate
Katie Sheridan (25.29). Conlon
(25.70) grabbed third place. At this
point, IHA held a commanding, 4121 lead.
“Immaculate Heart brought it today,” said Amy West. “We wanted to
bring it too. I think we did a very good
job in a lot of events. They just were
really strong in the water today.”
That was the story of the day, really.
IHA was dominant, frequently filling
two of the top three spots in each
event. While Devin (58.98) took first
in the 100-fly, IHA swimmers Jill
Calocino (59.34) and Caccamo
(1:01.06) earned second and third place
finishes. In the 100-freestyle, Horne
took first (54.80) ahead of Westfield’s
Muriel Maloney (55.0). IHA’S
Czochanski (55.67) came in third. By
the end of the first six events, IHA was
in total command, leading 61-33.
“We came into this meet looking to
post individual best times for the season,” said Blue Devil coach Lauren
Hauser. “We did that in a lot of cases
today. We had several girls post season-best times. That was the way we
approached it. Immaculate Heart is a
very strong team. We were close all

three-year varsity letter winner and an integral part of the cheerleading squad
this year. Amanda was also selected to the National Cheerleading Association’s
All-American team. Senior Gavin Murray set the school record for career pins
this past weekend and helped lead the Cougars to a Union County Tournament
team title. He was also named Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.

In the 500-free, Westfield’s Emily
McGann (5:31.81) finished third to
IHA’s Lauer (5:07.12). The Blue
Devils took second and third in the
100-backstroke with Basil (1:00.6)
and Maloney (1:02.22) providing
solid efforts.
In the 200-free relay, IHA’s
Caccamo, Czochanski, Horne and
Sheridan posted a winning time of
(1:41.76) edging Blue Devils Day,
Emily Oster, Conlon and Devin
(1:42.12). IHA finished out the day
by claiming first place in the 400-free
relay with Caccamo, Calocino,
Czochanski and Fazio touching in
(3:44.25). Day, Oster, Maloney and
Basil managed a third place showing
(3:49.09).
The loss left Westfield with a 7-3
mark for the season but given that it
came against a team in IHA, which is
considered to be perhaps the top
swimming team in the state by some,
is a source of some consolation.
“This team is where it needs to be,”
said West. “I have no worries. I think
we can win the county title again if
we continue to swim the way we have
been lately.”
