Bulletin for 01/25/2015 - St. Gregory the Great Church
The Gregorian “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” January 25, 2015 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 January 25, 2015 St. Gregory the Great Mission Statement St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live. REDEDICATION AND BLESSING OF THE MURAL OF JESUS AND THE CHILDREN On Sunday, January 25 after the 10:30a.m. Mass, we will rededicate and bless the mural of Jesus and the children that is located in the area above the altar servers sacristy in the North East corner of the Church where our Children’s Liturgy of the Word currently takes place. This mural originally was located in the kindergarten room of St. Gregory the Great Grammar School where parishioner Mary Nocek was the teacher for many years. When the Grammar School closed, the mural was moved into the area above the altar servers sacristy. Over the past several months, Joseph Malham, our artist in residence, along with his assistant Nick Appel, cleaned and restored the mural. You are invited after any of our Masses the weekend of Jan. 24-25 to go up and see our restored mural of Jesus and the children. It is most appropriate that our Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place in front of this beautiful mural. – Fr. Paul WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY The Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the World Council of Churches encourage their faithful to celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity between the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul, January 18-25, 2015. The theme chosen for 2015 is “Give me a drink.” The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman invites us to try water from a different well and also to offer a little of our own. In diversity, we enrich each other. When Jesus says to her, “please give me a drink” it implies an ethical action that recognizes the need for one another in living out the Church’s mission. It compels us to change our attitude, to commit ourselves to seek unity in the midst of our diversity, through our openness to a variety of forms of prayer and Christian spirituality. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a privileged moment for prayer, encounter and dialogue. It is an opportunity to recognize the richness and value that are present in the other, the different, and to ask God for the gift of unity. Throughout 2015, join Christians everywhere in praying for Christian unity. How can every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Chicago respond to this call to foster visible Christian Unity in 2015? We can pray each day from January 18-25, uniting our prayers for unity with Christians world-wide. A special Mass will be held on Thursday, February 12 at 7:00p.m., St. John Brebeuf Church, 8307 N. Harlem Ave., Niles, IL A reception and opportunity to have your picture taken with the Archbishop will follow the Mass. RELIGIOUS BOOKS FOR CHILDREN IN CHURCH Near the baptismal font in the Southwest corner of Church, you can now find a bookcase that contains children’s books that have a spiritual, biblical or religious focus. Those of you who are parents who have small children are invited to take one of these books home with you and share it with your child or children. We ask that you return the book to the bookcase when you have finished reading it. Then feel free to take another book. If you have any religiously themed books for children in your home that you no longer need or use, please add it to the collection in Church so that other parents can have some resources to share our faith and belief with their children. My thanks to Mary Ann Harrington who donated not only these books but also the bookcase. – Fr. Paul ST. GREGORY’S SECOND ANNUAL MIDWINTER FAMILY CARNIVAL! YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME Dwell In the Scriptures, we find a cluster of similar and important words—dwell, stay, abide, and remain. They all point to a single reality. In the rite of Baptism, water was poured on us. Even more significantly, as Saint Paul says, “ God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5) Deep within us, then, in our hearts, God dwells within us by the power of the Holy Spirit. The presence of God dwelling within us through Baptism signals the absolute closeness we enjoy with God. And God’s indwelling presence is reliable. He is always faithful, even if we are not. He stays with us and stands by us. Finally, this presence of God dwelling in us in sacrament and mystery is a foretaste of our future. Our hope and our destiny is that we will dwell in God and God in us, when we see God face-to-face. Page 4 January 25, 2015 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus says: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” As disciples we are called to continue God’s work on earth. Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living Gospel values. 2015 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS JAN. 31- FEB. 1 Many of our parishioners should have received a mailing from Archbishop Blase Cupich asking that you make a pledge to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. The Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to children, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. The Appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. A gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministry to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese. This year the theme of the Appeal is: “Entrusted With Responsibility.” It is God’s love for us that is responsible for all that we are and all that we have. We are the beneficiaries of God’s love throughout our lives. As our response, we each have a responsibility to recognize God’s gifts to us, to develop them and to find ways to share them with others. As we contemplate God’s gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support of the work our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Next weekend I will talk at all our Masses about the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please note that when our parish reaches its goal of $21,116 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. Please prayerfully consider making a pledge to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. – Fr.
