Beschreibung
Das vom FWF finanzierte START-Projekt Beyond Politics: Material Culture in Second
Intermediate Period Egypt and Nubia sucht eine/n Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in (praedoc) für eine auf 3 Jahre befristete Projektstelle. Es wird erwartet, daß die/der erfolgreiche
Bewerber/in eine Dissertation über ein mit dem Projektziel verbundenes Thema verfassen
wird. Beyond Politics widmet sich dem Verständnis von regionalen Entwicklungen von
materieller Kultur in der Zweiten Zwischenzeit abseits der gängigen politischen Paradigmen.
Das Dissertationsprojekt soll sich mit der Archäologie einer bestimmten Region oder eines
bestimmten Grabungsplatzes beschäftigen unter Verwendung von Archivbeständen,
Publikationen und Museumssammlungen. Diachrone Entwicklungen der materiellen Kultur
eines begrenzten geographischen Raumes in der Zeit vom Mittleren Reich bis zum frühen
Neuen Reich stehen im Mittelpunkt des Projektes. Das genaue Thema wird in
Zusammenarbeit mit den Projektmitarbeitern noch präzisiert werden, aber Archivarbeiten,
Arbeit mit Museumsobjekten und Mitarbeit in archäologischen Projekten in Ägypten/Sudan
werden fixer Bestandteil sein. Die Forschungsergebnisse werden Teil des breiter angelegten
Forschungsprogramms der regionalen Entwicklung der materiellen Kultur bilden. Das Projekt
beinhaltet den Gebrauch standardisierter Aufnahmemethoden, Datenspeicherung und –
analyse und daher hat es auch eine Trainingskomponente. Die Bereitschaft sich mit Materieller
Kulturtheorie und anderen kultur- und sozialanthropologischen Fragestellungen
auseinanderzusetzen ist nötig.
Anforderungen
Eine sehr gute Qualifikationsarbeit (M.A. oder entsprechendes) in Ägyptologie mit einem
archäologischen Thema (bevorzugt über das Mittlere Reich, die Zweite Zwischenzeit oder das
frühe Neue Reich), die abgeschlossen sein muss bei Antritt der Stelle.
Gute Grundkenntnisse der Archäologie in Ägypten und Nubien in der Zweiten Zwischenzeit
Kenntnisse in der Funddokumentation (einschließlich Objektzeichnung und Fotografie) und
der Analyse von Artefakten
Solide Kenntnis der ägyptischen Keramik
Grabungserfahrung
Ausreichende Sprachkenntnisse in Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch
Computerkenntnisse: MS Office, ADOBE CS

The START-Project Beyond Politics: Material Culture in Second Intermediate Period Egypt
and Nubia funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is seeking to employ a
Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (prae-doc)/Scientific Staff Member for a fixed term appointment
of 3 years. In this time it is expected the successful applicant will write a PhD on a theme
related to the aims of the project. Beyond Politics is a project devoted to understanding regional
developments of material culture in the SIP beyond the political paradigm.
The doctoral project should be concerned with the archaeology of a specific site or region
during the SIP utilising archives, publications and museum collections. The special focus is on
the diachronic development of material culture in a limited geographical space from the Middle
Kingdom through to the early New Kingdom. The precise theme of research will be defined
with the collaboration of project staff, but it is envisaged it will include archival work, work with
museum objects and liaising with current field projects. The results will form part of the wider
research programme into regional development of material culture. The project will use
standardised methods of recording, data storage and analysis, therefore the position entails a
training component. Willingness to engage with material culture theory and wider
anthropological and sociological literature is essential.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
An excellent MA or equivalent in Egyptology with an archaeological theme (preferably in the
MK, SIP or early NK). The work must be completed by the commencement of the position.
Thorough knowledge of the archaeology of Egypt and Nubia during the SIP
Expertise in the documentation (including drawing and photography) and analysis of artefacts
Sound knowledge of Egyptian ceramics
Excavation Experience
Language Skills: Working knowledge of German, English and French.
Computer Skills: MS Office, ADOBE CS
