Romance, Mystery, Laughter
and Dinner at the Ox Yoke
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Ox Yoke
Inn dinner theatre offers a comedy by Ron Clark
and Sam Bobrick, Murder at the Howard Johnson’s, starring Tom Milligan, Deborah Kennedy
and T.J. Besler, Feb. 13 – March 8.
This will be the 9th dinner theatre at the Ox
Yoke for Milligan and Kennedy. In December
they directed T.J. Besler in a raucous production
of the wry, Santaland Diaries. Now they team
with Besler in a delightfully funny play about
a trio who contemplate crime, but can’t seem to
make anything work. All’s fair in love including
murder? That’s the question posed by this clever
comedy about a love triangle gone askew.
“Often the scripts (of whodunits) are more of
an improvisational outline, and the actors often
have more ad-libbed lines than scripted. Murder
at the Howard Johnson’s is a fully scripted play
written in three scenes and it is a very funny,
‘absurdist’ play,” said Milligan. “It is very clever,
the characters have some great quirks and the
writing has great rhythm.”
Milligan has been a professional actor for over
30 years. He’s worked with Kennedy since 2006
and this real-life husband-wife team have done
so many shows together, we can’t begin to count.
They truly love working together. As Kennedy
put it, “We discovered that we were a great artistic team early on. Tom, with all of his years of
experience, is a very generous artist. He is not
proud. . . He is very calm, unassuming and welcomes collaboration.”
Kennedy’s long resume at the Old Creamery,
the Iowa Theatre Artists Co. and other midwestern showplaces is chock full of very challenging
roles and Milligan’s pride in his wife and co-star
is evident, “Deb is a wonderful creative partner
who will not settle for anything less than her
own, as well as the project’s best.”
When they took a look at the shows they wanted to produce at the Ox Yoke in 2014 and 2015
they knew right away that T.J. Besler, perhaps
one of the best comic actors around, would be the
perfect collaborator.

About the photo
at the top of page 3
The photo of the softball team was sent to me
by Lanny. Once I got it I called Tanta M and
about an hour later she and Oma KT showed up
to have a look. Well they left here rather excited
about the prospect of looking through their old
year books, and though they came up with most
of the names I felt it better to wait and let everyone else take a shot at putting names to the faces.
We do have someone on that team, so by next
week we should have all the names. I will print
the photo then with the names. Enjoy, good luck.

AMANA HERITAGE SOCIETY
FAMILY ALBUM PROJECT
Have you been wanting to get those old family photos out of the shoe box and into some kind
of order? These cold January evenings and the
Amana Heritage Society’s new Family Album
Photo Project are your opportunity. As part of
our ongoing Amana genealogy project, we want
tocreate a photo archives of Amana families to
complement our genealogical records and files.
We invite you to call or e-mail to schedule
an appointment to bring your old and new family photos to the museum. We will sort through
them with you and scan selected photos. All photos will be returned to you and you may have a
copy of the digital scans if you want. One of the
primary goals of the project is to identify people
in the photos, so any identification you can make
in advance would be very helpful.
Contact Lanny or Kelly at the museum to
make an appointment or with any questions at
319-622-3567 or [email protected].
Using the Album project
Shown here is a perfect examples of valuable
photos from family collections. The photo below
shows a group of young girls and one boy from
Middle Amana from about 1914 (based on the
known dates of birth).
The photo was most likely was taken during a
school day or special event. The individual faces
can now be compared to other photos in later profiles of these individuals. The goal is to have names
to go along with faces in a computer archive and
keep profiles of most former citizens of the Amanas. This ambitious project will be ongoing and become part of the genealogical research of our history and its citizens.
The photo project has now advanced so that the
collection of your personal and family pictures can
be added to the expanding inventory. The first step
is to find and collect your old photos. Secondly, if
known, print in pencil on the back of each picture
the “who, what, where and when” of the photo. Any
information is better then none.

Feathers in the wind
Growing up my sister and I would often find
fun just looking through our mother’s box of buttons.
It was an old cigar box whose top was worn off
the main part of the box by our constant use. To
this day I feel that buttons should be stored in
boxes, but finding a cigar box is almost impossible.
We would begin by dividing the buttons according to color. Then we would divide them up by
shapes. There always seemed to be one or two
buttons that just were not round or square, but
some odd shape we could not match with any
other button.
Finally we would divide the buttons according
to how many buttonholes were in each button. Of
course those with shanks, had to be set aside for
still another “division.”
One day my sister decided to stick a button up
her nose. Naturally there was much wailing because she was convinced she could not breathe
and certainly would die. I, being older, showed
no concern. Quite frankly, I had wanted that
particular button and she had taken it away so it
served her right…it just stood to reason that she
had to be punished!
Naturally with those tiny fingers of hers she
had wedged the button securely in her nose so
our parents were called to the rescue. It was decided (after many tries) that the only solution to
this “terrible problem” (I still did not care) was to
take her to Onkel Doktor Moershel.
We ended up in the waiting room with my sister on my mother’s lap and me looking to see if
that Mission style clock in his waiting room had
stopped. It hadn’t.
All of a sudden my sister sneezed and the button “popped” out. We all got up and left. I am
sure that Onkel Doktor had wondered what all
the fuss was about when he came to the door after finishing with his patient.
Again I was totally disgusted because my sister had “ruined” my chance of getting a stick of
“Juicy Fruit Gum.” (We seemed to always get
this particular kind of gun when we went to Onkel Doktors.)
Not too many years later we upstairs in our
Grandpa Stuck’s house when I noticed a door in
the ceiling that I had never seen before. Naturally my sister and I insisted that we had to see
where that door led. After getting a ladder and
having our poor grandfather climb up the ladder
with us close behind we found an empty attic!
Suddenly my keen eyed sister saw a little box
tucked away near the SE corner. Yes, we made
our grandpa literally crawl across the attic in his
white shirt and good trousers to retrieve what we
were sure was a box containing something valuable. After all we had been having our mother
read the HAPPY HOLLISTER book series so we
KNEW that we too would find treasure just like
the Hollisters did.
We were “kind” enough to let him know in what
direction he should head and warn him not to
knock his head against the rafters.
Eventually the box was retrieved and the two
of us scrambled down the ladder leaving our
grandpa to finish closing the attic door and taking the ladder away.
Yes, we found a treasure. It was a box of BUTTONS! Need I say more?
