“You Are Our Lifeguards:” Filial Play
Therapy with a Fost/Adopt Family
(3 CE)
Presenter:
Karen Pernet LCSW, RPT-S, SEP
Case example of a fost/adopt family will
demonstrate how Filial Play Therapy can be
adapted to meet the attachment needs of
children with developmental trauma. Included
are a review of Filial, video of sessions, and
use of additional directive interventions.
Learning Objectives:
After the session, participants will be able to
(1) List and describe the four basic skills
which are taught to parents in Filial Play
Therapy
(2) List three play therapy interventions for a
child’s disregulated nervous system
(3) Name two ways that Filial Play Therapy
helps adoptive parents establish a stable
home for their traumatized children.
(4) Describe how externalizing play and
internalizing play manifest in the play therapy
office.

What They Have to Teach Us: Children of
Gay and Lesbian Families in Play
Therapy (3 CE)

This workshop looks at myths and realities of
growing up in a gay / lesbian headed
household today. Explores ways play
therapists may promote a healthy climate for
gay / lesbian families in our playrooms and in
our communities.
Learning Objectives:
After the session participants will be able to:
(1) Identify three stereotypes about gay men
and lesbians and how they interfere with the
work of play therapy when left unexplored.
(2) Discuss three factors contributing to the
tension between secrecy and openness
experienced by children in gay / lesbian
families and how they might present
themselves during play therapy.
(3) List at least two ways gay and lesbian
parenting has contributed to our
understanding of healthy families.
(4) Identify three resources for information
and support for parents and children in gay /
lesbian headed families when they seek help
from play therapists.

origins of sexual behavior problems in
children 12 and under, distinguishing sexual

(2) Common issues that arise when utilizing
play therapy with children experiencing grief
& loss.
(3) Three play therapy interventions to
address grief & loss issues.

sexual play and exploration, assessing sexual
behavior and the use of effective play therapy
interventions that are supported by current
research.
Learning Objectives:
After the session, participants will be able to:
(1) Gain an overall general understanding of
sexual behavioral problems in children 12 and
under, including current theories and research
findings.
(2) Have a working knowledge of
assessments used with children, treatment
modalities, treatment components, and best
practices incorporating play therapy that lead
to increased outcomes.
(3) Increase knowledge of general public
policy considerations, labeling,
misperceptions, and isolation that can effect
treatment of children with sexual behavior
problems.
(4) Identify key considerations in the
treatment of children 12 and under and play
therapy strategies for integrating the primary
caregiver and the family in treatment.

Katrinca Ford brings to this
workshop 12 years of
experience as a play
therapist, 35 years of
professional experience
working with children, a
lifetime of experience as a
member of the gay and
lesbian community and 25
years of experience as a mom. Katrinca has
a private practice in San Ramon CA for where
specializes in work with young children.
Victoria Keyser, MSW, PsyD
Victoria Keyser
earned her MSW in
2005 and her Psy.D in
2011. She has
focused her clinical
work in children’s
Dr. Guedet, MFT is a
licensed therapist, who
has been working with
children (0 – 18 years)
for approximately 29
years. Dr. Guedet has
extensive work in areas
of childhood physical and sexual abuse,
domestic violence, immigrant refugee
populations, and at-risk children. In 2013 Dr.
Guedet began working with children with
sexual behavior problems.
Toni McCormick, LMFT
Toni McCormick is a
licensed clinical social
worker in private
practice in Auburn, CA.
Toni has provided both
community and office
based services for children and families with a
focus on issues of trauma/neglect/abuse,
depression and anxiety, sexual behavior
mental health and has extensive experience
in working with children and adolescents in a
variety of settings. Victoria currently
coordinates a grant funded school-based
counseling program and is an adjunct
professor at the University of La Verne.
Additionally, she has been a volunteer
therapist for Comfort Zone Camps since 2009,
where she utilizes her play therapy
background to provide grief counseling to
young children in camp settings.
Karen Pernett, LCSW, RPT-S,
SEP
Karen Pernet, LCSW, RPT-S, a
25 year practitioner, is in
private practice in Oakland
and is co-founder of two
play therapy training
programs: Growth Through
Play Therapy and
Connecting to Play Therapy.
She is a Filial Therapy certified trainer and was
co-recipient of the 2009 Outstanding
Contributions to Filial Therapy Practice. Karen
has presented on Filial Therapy internationally,
at APT conferences and throughout
California.

families to increase attachment and
communication within the family system,
through the use of play. Toni is a certified
Equine Assisted Psychotherapist and has
incorporated the use of play therapy, along
with horses, in her treatment. Toni is playful by
nature and working to complete her registered
play therapist credential.
Jodi Smith, MSW, LCSW,
RPT-S
Jodi Smith is a
Licensed Clinical
Social Worker and
Registered Play
Therapist Supervisor.
She has been working
with troubled and at-risk children, teenagers
and their families, in various capacities, for
over 15 years. She has worked extensively
with children in a wide variety of settings
including residential treatment centers,
hospital settings, and in schools. She is
currently the Director of Norton-Fisher Child &
Family Programs for West End Family
Counseling. Additionally, she maintains a
private practice in Claremont and is a
adjunctprofessor for USC School of Social
Work.
Continuing Education:
This workshop meets the qualifications for 6
hours of continuing education credit for MFTs
and LCSWs per day as required by the
California Board of Behavioral Sciences
(Provider # PCE 1007). CALAPT is approved
by the American Psychological Association to
sponsor continuing education for
psychologists. Psychologists may receive 6
hours of continuing education credit per day
for this workshop. Six hours of continuing
education are offered on Saturday as required
by the Association for Play Therapy (APT). The
California Association for Play Therapy
(CALAPT) is approved by APT to offer
continuing education specific to play therapy
(Provider # 00-094). CALAPT maintains
responsibility for this program and its content.
Partial credit (fewer than 6CEs) is not available
for this workshop.
