His subsequent career saw him rise to the pinnacle of success during the 1990s as co-founder of a highly successful high-tech firm. In retirement, Paul has used the rewards from that success to help others, from his generous support of the Encina Alumni Challenge to his work in the field of wildlife conservation. Paul graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in electrical engineering. He subsequently spent two decades working at major Silicon Valley companies such as Intel and Sun Microsystems. In 1995 he cofounded Brocade Communications, which quickly became the market leader in Computer Storage Area Networks. Over the years he served as the VP of Engineering, VP of Strategic Development and Chief Technical Officer of a company that at its peak was valued at $25 billion. In retirement, Paul has generously donated time and resources to a variety of boards and non-profit organizations. He currently serves as President of Ducks Unlimited—a group that conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl—and is an advisor for the College of Agriculture at UC Davis. His love of nature and wildlife is the result of the many hunting and fishing trips he took over the years with his father. In addition, Paul is on the Foundation Board at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and is past President of the school’s Engineering Advisory Board. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Taylor Family Foundation, which strives to enhance the quality of life for children in Northern California with life-threatening illnesses and developmental disabilities through unique therapeutic experiences and support. Inducted April 22, 2016 Paul also has been very generous in his support of the Alumni Challenge, each year offering a large amount in matching funds which has contributed to the event’s overall success. Today he enjoys spending time on his ranch in the Upper Butte Basin growing rice and maintaining numerous wetlands and uplands for the conservation of waterfowl and animals. He and his wife Sandi have two children, Rich and Trisha, and four grandchildren.
