School Updates
Dear Richard Montgomery High School Community:
With the start of January 2015, let me update you on the following:

Richard Montgomery would like to congratulate Instrumental Music teacher Peter
Perry on successfully defending his dissertation to complete his degree as a Doctor
of Music Arts in Music Education from Shenandoah University in Front Royal, VA.
Congratulations Dr. Peter Perry. We also had four teachers who were honored for
achieving certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
(NBPTS) in 2014: Leah Wilson, Laura Goetz, John Goetz, and Todd Stillman.

Richard Yarrow, senior at Richard Montgomery High School, is one of two students
selected to represent the state of Maryland in the 53rd annual United States Senate
Youth Program (USSYP) held in Washington, D.C. in March 2015. He will also receive a $5,000 scholarship.

Maya I. Krishnan, a 2010 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School’s International Baccalaureate program, is among the latest round of Rhodes Scholars. She
will attend Oxford University, beginning in fall 2015. Maya is a senior at Stanford
University, majoring in philosophy, with minors in computer science and classics.
While at Richard Montgomery, Krishnan said, it was social studies teacher Robert
Thomas who made a difference for her and who has remained a mentor over the
years. He was her first philosophy teacher.

Molly Zhang, senior at Richard Montgomery High School, won a $40,000 college
scholarship in the 15th annual Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. Zhang was one of six high schoolers in the individual finals, which were held in
December at George Washington University in Washington. Her project was in biochemistry, researching gold nanostructures. Yizhen Zhang, senior at Richard
Montgomery, was also a semifinalist in the 2014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology.

Congratulations to Nick Hopwood, a sophomore at Richard Montgomery, and
Michelle Schrier, a senior at Richard Montgomery, who successfully auditioned
and were accepted into the 2014-2015 Senior All-state Choruses. Additionally,
Michelle participated in the National Association for Music Education’s National
Honors Choir in Nashville in October, while preparing for her starring role in
“Beauty and the Beast.” Michelle was also accepted into the NAfME All-Eastern
Chorus for April 2015.


Congratulations to Susanqi Jiang, a senior at Richard Montgomery, who has been
selected from an initial pool of 100,000+ applicants as a Semifinalist in the CocaCola Scholars Program. She will continue on through the selection process with an
opportunity to receive a $20,000 scholarship.

The Board of Education has set the calendar for the
2015-2016 school year. Classes will begin on Monday,
August 31, 2015, and are scheduled to end on Friday,
June 17, 2016. Spring Break will run from March 25 to
April 1.

2014-2015 Contingeny Calendar
MCPS Will Follow Contingency Calendar for 20142015
If MCPS has to make up instructional days in the 2014–
2015 school year due to emergency closings, MCPS will follow the already approved contingency calendar for the 2014
–2015 school year. MCPS will add days onto the end of the
school year, unless a waiver is granted by the Maryland
State Department of Education. MCPS will not open on holidays, reduce spring break or cancel negotiated professional
days.

Richard Montgomery High School—Financial Aid Night
Save the date for Financial Aid Night!
regardless of the college your student attends.
From 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January
14, 2015, Richard Montgomery will host our annual
Financial Aid Night.
Both presentations will include step-by-step directions for completing the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA). Prior to the evening, please
visit www.fafsa.ed.gov which is the official FAFSA
website. Parents can download the worksheet for the
Web, review the process and come prepared with
questions. Do you know what is meant by EFC? Do
you know the FAFSA deadline for the State of Maryland? When is a student considered independent? Have these questions and more answered on
January 14th! Plan to get the most
out of the evening!
This year the program will also be presented in Spanish for our Latino families. Alexandra Gonzalez, who
is a Financial Aid Outreach Counselor at Montgomery
College, will be presenting the program for Latino families in the career center. Barbara Miller, who is the
Director of Financial Aid at Stevenson University, will
be presenting the English program in the Auditorium. Both of our speakers are extremely familiar with
the college financial aid process which is the same
FY 2016 Operating Budget Recommendation
Superintendent Joshua P. Starr is recommending a $2.4
billion operating budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2016, which
includes $103.6 million in additional spending that will
allow MCPS to manage its continued growth, narrow
achievement gaps, and prepare students for the future.
Dr. Starr presented his recommendation to the Montgomery County Board of Education on Tuesday, December 9, emphasizing that it is part of a multiyear budgeting strategy that began in FY 2014.
“My budget recommendation builds on the investments
we have made the past two years to ensure we are serving our students to the highest level,” Dr. Starr said. “I
am recommending a budget that will allow us to keep up
with our growing enrollment, while ensuring that all students have the skills and knowledge they need to be prepared to thrive in their future.”
Most of the $103.6 million spending increase will be used
to provide the same level of services to a growing number
of students; fund ongoing salaries and benefits; and manage increasing operational costs. The recommendation
includes $8.2 million in strategic priority enhancements
that are focused on improving student performance while
narrowing achievement gaps. Dr. Starr’s recommendation
also includes $23.3 million that will be needed to replace
the one-time revenue source the Montgomery County
Council used to fund retiree benefits in the FY 2015 budget.

RMHS? Talk to anyone whose services you employ on a
daily basis – your plumber, doctor, restaurant/shop
owner, clergy, karate/music/gymnastic/art instructors… be creative.
Each speaker will be with a teacher for six 25-minute
periods. You will deliver a 15 minute presentation
about your profession, and then answer questions for
the rest of each period. The approximate total time commitment is for hours, and you just might change a

young person’s life!
At the end of the day, you may also participate in a Career Fair on Main Street.
The RM Boosters and PTSA will provide refreshments
and food.

Congratulations to Emmanuel Porquin and Rohann Asfaw
for breaking Richard Montgomery Indoor Track & Field records. Emmanual broke the 800 Meter record with a time of
1:59.11. He also broke the school record in the 1000 with a
time of 2:35.22. Rohann broke the 2 mile
record with a time of 9:30.21.



