Hugh Lynn Cayce. Hugh Lynn was a gifted
speaker and had a very personal relationship with Jesus the Christ. This subject
matter was a favorite topic of his and
Hugh Lynn’s perspective on the readings
and the Christ is invaluable.

THE JESUS I KNEW:
Hugh Lynn Cayce
When we finally begin to deal with
our exact concepts of love in the
earth, we quickly realize just how
silly we are. We get involved in
physical love, which is a beautiful
thing. “. . . all love is lawful, of every
nature, not all is expedient unto good
works” (Edgar Cayce reading 16323). All love is beautiful, the readings
say, but some of it is not expedient
at a given time and place. You and I
become confused and very selfish
and egotistical when we get involved and caught up in physical
love. When we add the mental and
emotional patterns of our lives, then
we really get involved, emotional,
and possessive. Even with our children we beget possessive love that
smothers, destroys, and kills this
love.
But when we begin to move toward
a more universal concept of love
such as Jesus manifested, we start
to relate to God in a more real sense.
There are several ways in which we
can measure love.
First, how close does God walk with
us in our daily lives? How personal
is He to us? How close are we to
Him? How often do we praise God,
thank God, relate to God? Our efforts in prayer may bring this about.
Through prayers of thanksgiving,
praise, and admiration, we can
build a very experience with God.
Second, how do we, you and I, consciously try to make our will one
with God’s? Do we affirm this and
open ourselves to His will, or do we
say as St. Augustine, “Lord, make

me pure—but not now.” Are we asking to know God’s
will or are we trying to relate to it in opening ourselves,
but not now—“Not Thy will in this situation.” Are we
saying, “Now, I’m willing in this way but not in this
other way. Don’t bother me over here. I want my will
over here, but I want Your will about this over there.”
You see, we begin to measure it. What’s God will? Do
we stop to find out? How do we discover God’s will?
We’ve got to relate ourselves to it, to open ourselves to
try to know what God’s will is for us.
Now, the third way we can relate to God and God’s love
may sound rather Sunday-schoolish to you. It’s in the
words of Jesus, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). It’s that simple. Love is related to
obeying the spiritual laws that we know. Now you don’t
have to obey what Susie knows. Susie may be way up
on cloud nine and know a lot of spiritual laws. Let’s
say, for the sake of argument, that you and I don’t know
the laws that Susie knows, so we can’t follow those. But
we have to follow the ones that we do know. We can’t
just know about them; we have to live them and put
them into action. “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
Fourth, we can understand love if we give. Now this
hurts. Love is giving. We can give money sometimes,
but we often can’t take the time to give to ourselves.
We can’t even take the time to listen to someone. You
can give a child a TV set, but you can’t have a conversation with him—you haven’t got the time. You can lend
a friend a book, but you can’t take the time to listen and
encourage and care, to reach out and touch. Love is giving. What do we give? What do we have to give? Prayer,
love itself, constructive thought, encouragement, the
touch of a hand, a smile—these are simple things of
which we have so much. We can give them away, over
and over, and never miss a one. You never miss a smile,
a prayer, a kind word, or a word of encouragement.
This is love.

THE JESUS I KNEW:

When we finally begin to deal with
our exact concepts of love in the
earth, we quickly realize just how
silly we are. We get involved in
physical love, which is a beautiful
thing. “. . . all love is lawful, of every
nature, not all is expedient unto good
works” (Edgar Cayce reading 16323). All love is beautiful, the readings
say, but some of it is not expedient
at a given time and place. You and I
become confused and very selfish
and egotistical when we get involved and caught up in physical
love. When we add the mental and
emotional patterns of our lives, then
we really get involved, emotional,
and possessive. Even with our children we beget possessive love that
smothers, destroys, and kills this
love.
But when we begin to move toward
a more universal concept of love
such as Jesus manifested, we start
to relate to God in a more real sense.
There are several ways in which we
can measure love.
First, how close does God walk with
us in our daily lives? How personal
is He to us? How close are we to
Him? How often do we praise God,
thank God, relate to God? Our efforts in prayer may bring this about.
Through prayers of thanksgiving,
praise, and admiration, we can
build a very experience with God.
Second, how do we, you and I, consciously try to make our will one
with God’s? Do we affirm this and
open ourselves to His will, or do we
say as St. Augustine, “Lord, make
