A GUIDE FOR STUDENTS COMMENCING UNDERGRADUATE
STUDY IN BUSINESS & ECONOMICS AT UTAS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How do I get my ID card?
A: Student Identification (ID) cards are available from the Student Centre. You will need to show your
enrolment confirmation and photo ID. You may also get your ID card from the Library during Orientation
Week.
Q: Do I have to check my UTAS email?
A: Yes, it is essential that you check your UTAS email address at least once a week both during semester
and during semester breaks. Although it is not recommended to do so, if you are forwarding your email to
a personal email address, it is advised that you continue to log into your UTAS webmail periodically as
external email providers may block UTAS emails from time to time.
Q: Do I have to log into MyLO? Why?
A: Yes. MyLO is your access point to information relating to your units including: unit outlines; assessment
information; online tests; tutorial sign-up; discussion boards; additional readings; lecture recordings;
assessment results and messages from your lecturers.
Q: How do I access my webmail, MyLO and the eStudentCentre?
A: You will find links to all of these sites on the Current Students homepage; you must log in using your
UTAS username and password which you can locate on your Letter of Offer. If you have trouble accessing
any of these sites you should contact the Service Desk for support on 03 6226 1818 or email
[email protected]
Q: How do I contact IT Support?
A: You can visit the IT Help Desk in the Morris Miller Library on the Hobart Campus, the Library on the
Launceston Campus or the Student Centre on the Cradle Coast Campus
 or you can phone 03 6226 1818

Q: I have a medical problem that may affect my studies. Is there help with this?
A: If you have a disability, a learning disorder, a mental health issue, are on medication that affects your
studies, or have had an accident, then you should get in touch with the Student Centre, Disability Services
at: [email protected]. The Disability Adviser can organise appropriate arrangements and
support.
Q: Do I need to see a Faculty Officer for enrolment advice?
A: It is strongly recommended that you see a Faculty Officer or email [email protected] for
enrolment advice if you are enrolling in a combined degree; have not completed the Maths pre-requisite;
are planning to study part-time; or have applied for credit from previous tertiary studies.
Q: Where can I find a Faculty Officer?
A: The Faculty Officers are located on level 3 of the Commerce Building on the Hobart campus, Room
A253 on the Launceston Campus and in the Student Centre on the Cradle Coast Campus. There is no need
to make an appointment – you can simply drop in during consultation time – this will vary from campus to
campus and consultation details are listed under the ‘Important Contacts’ section of this document.
Q: When do I need to have my enrolment completed by?
A: You should enrol in your units before the start of semester. Enrolments are approved in order of
receipt, so the earlier you enrol, the earlier a Faculty Officer will have the opportunity to check your
enrolment.
Q: Do I need to nominate my major now?
A: You should start thinking about which major you will take as it will affect your future choice of units.
You should record your major in the eStudentCentre as soon as you know which major you will take,
either when you enrol, or later by logging into your eStudentCentre and selecting the ‘Change Major’
option under the Enrolments heading.
Q: Why is it important for me to nominate my major in the eStudentCentre?
A: We use your nominated major to check if you have enrolled in the correct units. If you don’t have your
major recorded in the eStudentCentre, we are not able to check your enrolment accurately and advise
you if your enrolment is incorrect.
Q: How do I know what units to take for my major?
A: Course planners can be found on the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics website under
Student Resources. You can print a planner for your major/s and keep this for the duration of your degree.
You need to follow the rules of the degree and major/s applicable to the year you started your degree (eg
if you start in 2014 you need to follow the 2014 degree rules and major rules).
Q: Do I need to enter my expected graduation semester?
A: Yes. It is important that you nominate your expected graduation semester to ensure that you don’t
miss out on graduation. This also assists us to check if you are on track to finish within your expected
completion time.
Q: Can I change my enrolment?
A: You can withdraw from units at any stage up until the census date without any academic penalty or
financial liability. If you wish to enrol in units after the end of the second week of semester, you will need
to seek written permission from the unit co-ordinator and sign a ‘Late Enrolment Condition’ statement.
Q: Why do I need permission to enrol in units after the second week of semester?
A: Some units start their assessment very early in the semester or allocate students to groups for
assignments in the first week or two of semester. You will therefore need to get permission from the unit
co-ordinator to ensure that you have not missed out on any assessment; that you are able to join a group
if the unit has group assessment; and that you are able to catch up on any work you have missed.
Q: How can I change my enrolment?
A: You change your enrolment online through the eStudentCentre by selecting the ‘Manage Enrolment’
option under the Enrolments heading. You must ensure that you proceed all the way to the point of
submission or any changes made will not be recorded.
Q: How often can I change my enrolment?
A: You can only make one change to your enrolment per day. Every time you change your enrolment it
needs to be checked and approved by a Faculty Officer. It generally takes at least 2 weeks for us to be
able to check your enrolment (it may take longer during peak periods such as the start of semester).
Q: Are there any fees to change my enrolment?
A: There are no fees to change your enrolment.
Q: My enrolment status in the eStudentCentre is Not Yet Approved. What does this mean?
A: If your enrolment status in the eStudentCentre is Not Yet Approved it means we have not been able to
check your enrolment yet. It generally takes at least 2 weeks for us to be able to check your enrolment (it
may take longer during peak periods such as the start of semester). If your enrolment status is Not Yet
Approved, you do not need to see a Faculty Officer. We ask that you be patient and we will check your
enrolment as soon as possible.
Q: How will I know if there is something wrong with my enrolment?
A: If there is something wrong with your enrolment you will be sent an email to your UTAS email address
explaining what is wrong with your enrolment and what you need to do to fix your enrolment. It generally
takes at least 2 weeks for us to be able to check your enrolment (it may take longer during peak periods
such as the start of semester).
Q: How do I find my class timetable?
A: Visit www.students.utas.edu.au and select ‘Class Timetable’. Either type in your unit codes separated
by a comma or your student ID number if you have already enrolled. Then select ‘Campus’, ‘Semester’
and ‘Lectures only’ (unless you want to view all tutorials available for a particular unit then select ‘All
Classes’). Click ‘View Details’ and then print your timetable.
Q: What does a unit weighting mean?
A: Each unit that you enrol in is assigned a unit weighting. Most of the units that you will undertake will
have a weight of 12.5%, making a full year’s worth of full-time study 100% (8 x 12.5% or any other
combination totaling 100%). When we advise you that you require 24 units in order to graduate from a
Bachelor of Business for example, what we mean is that you need equivalent to 24 x 12.5% units, so you
may actually complete 22 x 12.5% units and 1 x 25% unit. The fees attached to units with a higher
weighting will also be higher, for example the fee for BAA321 Corporate Internship (25%) is double the fee
for BAA322 Corporate Internship (12.5%).
Q: What are degree electives?
A: Degree electives are units chosen from your degree schedule, some of these units may be specified,
whilst others will allow you a choice from a limited list of options.
Q: What are student electives?
Student electives are your choice of any unit within the University, assuming that you meet any unit
prerequisites, observe any mutual exclusions, the unit is available as a student elective and fits within the
degree rules regarding the number of units you are able to take at a specific level. You can use your
student electives to take the equivalent of a second major or minor, or to pick up elective units in
alternative interest areas that fall outside your specific degree.
Q: What is a prerequisite?
A: A prerequisite is a unit or multiple units that must be successfully completed prior to enrolling in a
subsequent unit. For example, you must have completed Applied Maths at pre-tertiary level or UPP075 or
BEA109 or equivalent prior to attempting the unit BEA140 Quantitative Methods. Some units such as
BMA121 or BMA151 have a co-requisite in BMA101. This means you must have EITHER completed
BMA101 or be concurrently enrolled in BMA101 in order to enrol in these units.
Q: What does mutual exclusion mean?
Mutual exclusions indicate units that either have the same or very similar content, if two units are
mutually exclusive (for example BMA151 & BMA251 or BFA106 & BFA208) you will not be permitted to
count both units towards your degree or enrol in one of the units after having completed the other. Some
degrees/majors will specify that you MUST complete one of the two units even though those units are
mutually exclusive (for example to meet unit level requirements or attendance requirements).
