hiroshi sugimoto: dioramas
hiroshi sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto began to photograph his Dioramas series, a
body of work that spans almost four decades, when he moved
to New York City from Japan in 1974. While looking at the galleries in the American Museum of Natural History, he noticed
that if he looked at the dioramas with one eye closed, the artificial scenes—prehistoric humans, dinosaurs, and taxidermied
wild animals set in elaborately painted backgrounds—looked
utterly convincing. This visual trick launched his conceptual exploration of the photographic medium, which continues today.
Through his career, Sugimoto has addressed the photograph’s
power to create a history. He has said, “photography functions
as a fossilization of time.” In the Dioramas series, Sugimoto persuades the viewer that the photographer has captured a lived
moment in time, although each scene is an elaborately crafted
fiction. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Dioramas narrates a story of the cycle of life, death and rebirth, from prehistoric aquatic life to the
propagation of reptile and animal life to homo sapiens’ destruction of the planet—and then to a renewal of the earth, where
flora and fauna flourish without man. Here Sugimoto writes his
own history of the world, an artist’s creation myth.

Damiani is pleased to announce the publication of a series of
books on Sugimoto's work, in collaboration with Matsumoto

paradise
cy twombly
This book accompanies the exhibition Cy Twombly Paradise at
Museo Jumex in Mexico City from June 5–October 12, 2014. This
is the first time a comprehensive exhibition of the American
artist Cy Twombly’s work has been mounted in Latin America.
The exhibition and book include works on paper, paintings, and
sculpture that span Twombly’s career, from early works of the
1950s to the Camino Real series of paintings that he completed
shortly before his death in 2011. The book includes 57 works of
art, along with double-page, full-bleed detail photographs that
capture Twombly’s dramatic gestural style and lush palette.
Curator and author Philip Larratt-Smith contextualizes Twombly's work in his essay Psychedelic Antiquity: “For Twombly, the
myths of antiquity are dreams and mirrors. Mythical characters
are archetypes, and the sequence of events follows an oneiric
logic that is intuitively convincing even when irreducible to
reason. Twombly finds his own passions reflected in the external patterns of myth; the mirroring effect between aesthetic
experience and psychic response is profound and generative.
His works are never literary depictions of a myth, though myth
may suggestively open the work up to narrative. Myth permits
emotional expressivity without disclosing biographical origins
and, conversely, provides an objective correlative to the realm of
sexuality and fantasy.”

lakes and reservoirs
matthew brandt
Matthew Brandt creates his work using physical elements from
the depicted subject. Inspired by landscape photography of the
American West and alternative photograph processes developed
during photography’s infancy in the mid-nineteenth century—
the artist revives traditional photographic techniques through
various production processes. Whether soaking prints in water
from the depicted lake, printing on paper made from the subject
tree, or even using a pigment created from the subject, Brandt
blurs the line between the photograph and the photographed.
For his series Lakes and Reservoirs, Brandt photographs lakes and
reservoirs in the western United States, and then submerges
each resulting C-Print in water collected from the subject of the
photograph. Prints are soaked for days or weeks or even months,
and this process impacts the layers of color that comprise the
image. Brandt removes the print once it reaches its desired look,
which can range from mostly representational to completely abstract. The Lakes and Reservoirs series considers the current condition not only of our lakes and reservoirs, but also of traditional
color photography.
In December 2011, Forbes named Matthew Brandt (born 1982)
one of tomorrow’s “brightest stars,” in the article “30 Under 30:
Art & Design.” Brandt’s work is included in the collections of The
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; J. Paul Getty Museum,
Los Angeles; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Brooklyn
Museum, New York; Cincinnati Art Museum; Los Angeles County
Museum of Art; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Royal Danish Library, National Museum of Photography, Copenhagen; and the
Columbus Museum of Art, among others. Brandt was born in
California and received his BFA from Cooper Union and his MFA
from UCLA. The artist currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

polaroids
carlo mollino
In a career that spanned more than four decades, Carlo Mollino
designed buildings, homes, furniture, cars, aircraft. One of the
most dashing figures of mid-century Italy, Mollino was famed
for his design finesse and his elegant organicism. In 1949
he published an important book on photography: Message
from the darkroom. Sometime around 1960, he began to seek
out women—mostly dancers—in his native Turin, inviting
them to his villa for late- night modeling sessions. The models
would pose against extraordinary backdrops, designed by
Mollino, in clothing, wigs and accessories that he had carefully
selected. Finally, having printed the Polaroids, Mollino would
painstakingly amend them with an extremely fine brush, to attain his idealized vision of the female form. The 1200 pictures
remained a secret until after his death, in 1973. Only a few were
ever publically shown, until the acclaimed first edition of this
volume was published by James Crump in 2002. Reviewing that
book, The New Yorker declared, “This lavish selection of several
hundred Polaroids preserves the essential mystery of a project
both decadent and hermetic. Though clearly the product of a
deep obsession, the photographs are deliberately impersonal,
each baroque detail an invitation for the viewer to imagine
Mollino’s encounters with the women.” Now back in print, with a
newly designed cover, this beautiful volume offers a captivating
portrait of a unique erotic sensibility.
Carlo Mollino (1905–1973) studied mechanical engineering, art
history and architecture before working in the architectural
practice of his father, Eugenio Mollino, in Turin. His first
architectural masterpiece was the Turin Equestrian Association
headquarters (1937). In 1965 he designed Teatro Regio in Turin,
which is now regarded as one of his best works. A 1949 Mollino
table was sold at auction by Christie’s in 2005 for a staggering
$3.8 million. In 1960-68 he designed an enigmatic apartment
for himself that today has become the Museo Casa Mollino.

john severson's surf
john severson
Southern California, 1960. John Severson founded SURFER, the
first magazine to celebrate and revolutionize the art and sport
of surfing. Surfing’s most influential artist, John Severson (born
in Los Angeles in 1933) has altered the perception, obsession
and fascination of surfing in Pop culture. For over six decades,
from surfing’s seminal first painting Seal Beach Locals, to the
riot and mise-en-scene of his pioneering films––Surf Safari,
Surf Fever and Big Wednesday, through the creation of SURFER,
Severson has shaped the image and iconography of surfing
sending seismic vibrations into the soul of surf culture.
John Severson’s SURF is the first monograph and visual survey
to explore his singular odyssey through ephemera, painting,
photography, film, and publishing. This volume includes
contributions by surf icons, the Hawaiian tube rider Gerry Lopez
and the former editor of SURFER Drew Kampion. John Severson’s
SURF is a trip to the birth of surf culture and a testament to our
Ocean.

drawings and ephemera
stephen sprouse
Comprised of 1,500 separate pieces, including 600 original
drawings, color Xeroxes, swatch references and inspiration materials, Stephen Sprouse: Drawings and Ephemera encompasses
the design work of Sprouse (1953–2004) from 1974 through the
late 1980s, focusing the foundational period in which the designer effortlessly fused New York uptown glamour with the
edgy vibe of the East Village. The works on paper included here
reveal Sprouse’s unmistakable energy: his facile and powerful
inked lines, his use of the Xerox machine to apply vivid gouache
color and his often capitalized marginalia all reveal the vibrant,
unstoppable personality of a design genius. Also evident here
is the powerful influence of two of Sprouse’s most important
muses, Jackie Onassis and Debbie Harry of Blondie, the latter of
whom wore the off-the shoulder short dress in 1978 that served
as Sprouse’s public debut (Harry also provides the introduction
to this volume). Even in these two figures, the uptown/downtown, high-end/punk tensions that pervade Sprouse’s work is
apparent. Though recognized even at the tender age of 14 as
a design prodigy, Sprouse’s commercial success alternately
soared and stalled throughout the 1980s, but his assuredness
of vision and unique concepts have made legendary contributions to the world of fashion. The intimacy of the sketches and
designs collected here give the viewer a rare opportunity to
draw closer to Stephen Sprouse and his frenetic career.
Stephen Sprouse (1953–2004) launched his first collections in
the early 1980s, at exclusive outlets such as Bergdorf Goodman, and to immediate critical acclaim. In the late 80s, Sprouse
opened stores on Wooster St in New York and at the Beverly
Center in Los Angeles. He died of lung cancer at the age of 50.

landscape
david lachapelle
The latest monograph from David LaChapelle (born 1963) comprises two separate series, Gas Station and Refineries, each of
which was shot on location in the rainforests of Maui and on
the coastlines of California. This idyllic scenery is brutally punctured by LaChapelle’s scale models of disturbingly dazzling oil
refineries and petrol stations with bright, fluorescent smokestacks—handcrafted from cardboard and a vast array of recycled materials from egg cartons to tea canisters, hair curlers
and other byproducts of our petroleum based, disposabilityobsessed culture. The striking contrast between the fueling
stations and refineries and their naturalistic backdrops is both
captivating and repelling: though the natural world seems on
the verge of engulfing these manmade creations, the eerie, unnaturally lit buildings suggest the extent of the destruction already caused, even as their chromatic glare distracts from their
function.

the haas brothers
the haas brothers
In a meteoric rise to fame, the Los Angeles–based Haas Brothers
have garnered international accolades for their set design and
props for print and video, one-of-a-kind fashion works and their
highly original furniture and object designs. Their exploration
and mastery of materials—ranging from brass, bronze, porcelain
and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane—matched
with their insatiable curiosity and remarkable visual intelligence,
sets them apart as designers. This monograph—the first on
the brothers—focuses on their projects, including their Hex
series of handworked bronze tile pieces, their Accretion series
of unique ceramic vessels, the Beast series of bronze and wool
anthropomorphic furniture and a new body of works that engages
ideas about arousal and eroticism in playful, sculptural forms. The
book features color photographs as well as writings and drawings
by Simon and Nikolai Haas that convey their humor and eloquence
while illuminating the inspirations, theories and processes behind
the works, plus images of the Haas Brothers’ studio and practice.
Twin brothers Nikolai and Simon Haas (born 1984), known as The
Haas Brothers, got their start in design by studying stone carving
and construction under their father in their hometown of Austin,
Texas. In September 2010, the brothers were commissioned to
collaborate on a project by renowned architectural firm Johnston
Marklee, at Sony Studios in Los Angeles, and “The Haas Brothers”
as a studio practice was born. In the two years since, the brothers
have continued to grow their design studio and spend their time
prototyping forms and experimenting with materials, surface
textures and processes. In 2013 they created a limited edition
furniture collection for Versace. In their current design works, The
Haas Brothers explore aesthetic and formal themes related to
nature, science fiction, psychedelia and color theory.

toiletpaper calendar 2015
maurizio cattelan | pierpaolo ferrari
Toiletpaper is an artists’ magazine created and produced by
Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, born out of a passion
or obsession they both cultivate: images. The magazine contains no text; each picture springs from an idea, often simple,
and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes
the materialization of the artists’ mental outbursts. Since the
first issue, in June 2010, Toilet Paper has created a world that
displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination.
It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with
twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result
is a publication that is itself a work of art which, through its accessible form as a magazine, and through its wide distribution,
challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy.

new truth
fischerspooner
Founded by artists Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner in 1998,
Fischerspooner began as a philosophical provocation that
sought to explore the expressive potential located in the gap
between popular entertainment and art. Soon swelling from a
duo to an army of dancers, stylists, photographers, and musicians, the group has activated a variety of spaces such as traditional concert halls, nightclubs, construction sites, parades, art
galleries, and museums. Their Brechtian theatrics lay bare the
potential honesty of spectacle and device by not only revealing their inner workings but also celebrating them. Fischerspooner ultimately proposes that artifice and surface can be
recombined to create a new concept of authenticity—a new
truth. This kaleidoscopic monograph provides unprecedented
insight into the first five years of the Fischerspooner project.
From a debut performance in a New York City Starbucks, to a
blitz of the international art world, to more mainstream visibility via a major label recording contract, New Truth chronicles
Fischerspooner’s quest to profoundly upend the boundaries of
art, music, and performance. Invested in liminal spaces and
the in-between, Fischerspooner also captures a unique millennial moment that seemed to prophesy a future where the
avant-garde could be translated into a vernacular of pure joy.
Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner met at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago and formed Fischerspooner in New York
City in 1998. As an art pop performance project, Fischerspooner’s practice involves music, dance, fashion, film and photography. They have released three full-length music albums, #1
(2001), Odyssey (2005) and Entertainment (2009).

fractured
jeremy kost
Jeremy Kost’s (born 1977) last monograph, It’s Always Darkest before Dawn, established him as a master of the Polaroid. His body
of work is at once image, performative act and genre-bending
fusion of subject, environment and artistic technique. Borne of
one of the fortuitous mistakes in the artist’s studio that leads
to incredible breakthroughs—a camera malfunction—Kost’s
latest series consists of multiple-exposure Polaroids of young,
stereotypically beautiful men—a subject and technique that
Kost has been investigating for nearly a decade. These mesmerizing, layered Polaroid images are collected in Fractured, along
with contextualizing and descriptive text from Franklin Sirmans, LACMA Curator of Contemporary Art. Made throughout
2013, only a fraction of the work has been seen outside of the
studio before the publication of this book. Presenting dreamlike, fractured narratives collapsed into a single Polaroid frame,
each image takes the viewer to an intimate place filled with
broken dreams and unrequited desire, all whilst celebrating
man’s beauty and identity. Whether cropped to show luminous
details or simply floated on the page, each photograph represents a tangible, beautiful moment layered in mystery.

in medias res
josé parlá
José Parlá (born 1973) has received critical acclaim for his works,
which lie at the boundary between abstraction and calligraphy.
Composed from layers of paint, gestural drawing and found
ephemera, his work evokes the histories of urban environments.
José Parlá is a documentarian of city life. Using the backdrop of
New York and many other towns, he re-makes in paint what can
appear to be photorealist fragments of what he sees in the chaos
and rush of the metropolis. His paintings reflect the accumulated memories and experiences, the walls that show a place that
was, but no longer is — built over, renewed in some other configuration. Parlá paints revelations — transcriptions of the process
— proof of the history of our neighborhoods. Parlá’s work shows
that words, signs, and marks come to mean more; over time, in
this symphony of diversity, both incongruous and in harmony,
that surrounds our contemporary life. His practice originated
in graffiti’s experimental and collaborative approaches during
the eighties. These markings expose his drive to say or divulge
the passing of time, in the moment. In Media Res concentrates
on the body of Parlá’s work that stems from his experiences of
living and traveling in various countries: his time in Puerto Rico,
his childhood in South Florida in the 1980s, extended journeys
throughout the southern United States and Central America in
the 1990s and most recent travels throughout Europe and Asia.
Spanning painting, watercolor, photography and sculpture, this
volume shows Parlá at his most versatile and cosmopolitan.
Parlá was recently commissioned by Barclays Center in Brooklyn
(January 2013) and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (September
2012), as well as having recently held solo exhibitions at Haunch
of venison (London, U.K.) and Yuka Tsuruno gallery (Tokyo, Japan).
In 2013, Parlá was added to the collection of the British Museum,
(London, U.K.). José Parlá lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

the home stage
jessica todd harper
Jessica Todd Harper’s latest collection of images is aptly called
The Home Stage, a double entendre that alludes to both the
home bound lifestyle of families with small children as well as
the idea that home is the stage on which children first learn how
to live. Her nuanced treatment of her subjects and environs, coupled with her elegant compositions, unique color palette and
handling of light theatrically transforms each room and yard
into stage sets. No detail is left untouched by her eye. Private but
universal she is genuine, tender, uninhibited and at times humorous, bearing the emotional range of the finest actress and
pulling the strongest performances from a supporting cast that
includes her husband, her children, her sister, other family members and friends.

circus. a traveling life
norma i. quintana
Norma I. Quintana is a photographer and educator working
in the tradition of social documentary. In her first monograph,
Circus. A Traveling Life, Quintana shoots in black and white film
and available light to chronicle her decade-long collaboration
with an American, traveling one-ring circus. The photographs
in the book are not flash frozen, but a loving history of extended
families, another way of living in this world.
Essentially self-taught, Quintana has studied with some of the
world’s most important and influential photographers, such as
Mary Ellen Mark, Shelby Lee Adams, and Graciela Iturbide from
Mexico.
Quintana works solely in black-and-white and uses only available light. She creates dark, rich, masterful photographs with an
ageless, classic purity. Collaboration is essential to her process.
The images, Quintana insists, would not be possible without her
subjects’ willingness to reveal themselves.

the way we were

xavier guardans
Published in an edition of 50 copies, this special limited edition of The Way We Were includes a numbered and signed
photograph by Julian Wasser, and is issued in a cloth slipcase. The famous print features Marcel Duchamp playing
chess at his seminal 1963 Pasadena exhibition.
Windows is the debut volume of photographer Xavier
Guardans (1954). This limited edition of the trade volume is
slipcased and includes a signed and numbered print.
Guardans’ portraits of individuals from a variety of Kenyan
Tribes, including Turkana, Samburu, Masai, Rendille, Gabra
and Pokot were shot through the window of his Toyota
Land Cruiser. His world is both dark and light expressed elegantly through his choice of black and white film, for such
a colorful nation as Kenya. The balance in these images is
both solid and ephemeral.
This long-overdue monograph presents an astonishing panorama of a bygone Los Angeles from photographer Julian
Wasser. Some of the images are very well known--Joan Didion leaning against a Corvette Stingray in Hollywood, 1968;
Jack Nicholson and Angelica Huston at Jack’s Mulholland
Drive home, or the Fonda family lined up on the family sofa,
paint a picture of a very private Hollywood of the 1960s and
70s, when privacy was possible and celebrity culture had not
yet completely consumed the country. Mingled with these
iconic faces are pictures of California counterculture such
as the Hog Farm Commune in Sunland; surfers in Malibu
Beach; musicians such as the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Frank Zappa, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell and Elton John, documentation of events such as Robert Kennedy’s
campaign and the Watts riots.

12midnight
reza aramesh
In 2008, Sasha Eisenman began a photographic investigation of
the California Girl. Much of the photographs are nudes or seminudes. The images, while being sexy and provocative, also have
an innocent, playful, and romantic nature. Eisenman searched
out and photographed the unique style, personality, and beauty
of a varied group of girls from California. Initially Eisenman cast
from a small group of friends, who would meet at backyard parties, surf trips, or music shows.
In March to June 2013, the artist Reza Aramesh installed 5 sculptures in 5 different nightclubs in New York, each for the duration
of one month. The clubs were selected to represent a wide social spectrum of New York City, the exclusive Number 8, Bossa
Nova Civic Club where drinks normally cost one dollar, the flamboyantly gay Sugarland, the arty Santos Party House, the white
working class hub of The Marquis. The sculptures draw on the
images of violence and conflict that we are continuously bombarded with by mass media, to the point of general indifference.
Bringing these to a different arena, a different setting of daily
life, the artist initiates and investigation into notions of violence
and voyeurism.
Sasha Eisenman is an American fashion photographer. Having
grown up in Southern California, Eisenman was immersed in
the culture of surfing, the beach life style, and the freedom that
comes with it. Eisenman had a chance meeting with legendary
photographer Bob Richardson, who was impressed by the young
photographer’s work. Richardson suggested that Eisenman go to
London. Heeding this advice, Eisenman temporarily relocated to
London. Soon he began shooting for the highly influential, Dazed
and Confused Magazine. As a result, he joined the then-top photography agency Katy Barker, and spent the next several years living and working between London, Paris, and New York. His work
appeared in countless magazines, such as iD, Teen Vogue, the
New York Times Style Magazine, GQ, and Glamour. He also worked
with many advertising clients.

The title 12MIDNIGHT refers to how most executions take place
at midnight as well as the nocturnal euphoria of the clubber.
Presenting sculptures in boxes, viewable only through keyholes
further accentuates the notions of voyeurism, and even desire,
the project also references Marcel Duchamp’s Étant Donnés.
More than just an exhibition catalogue the book becomes a work
of art in itself. Taking the reader trough the journey of the project’s conception and inner logic.

The book features an encounters between creative communities:
a community of forced displaced villagers, a community of artists, of designers, and of architects. The context was the village
of Ein Hawd, an as of recently ‘unrecognized’ Palestinian village
built within viewing distance of the inhabitants’s former homes.

village. one land two systems and platform paradise
malkit shoshan | maurizio bortolotti
In summer of 2008, a group of over 20 artists and architects
gathered from over the world and submerged themselves in the
village’s daily life. They slept on the free beds the villagers could
offer for a period between a week and three weeks. In this time
the artists, the architects and the villagers produced wonderful
projects, shared amazing conversations, and arguments. They
reflected on the profession, on the context, and on life. This extreme condition forced them to stretch the boundaries of their
professions and forced them to be creative in so many ways:
architects practiced activism, villagers made art works, artists
made architecture and the other way around, and so much more.

Tom Bianchi was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated
from Northwestern University School of Law in 1970. He became a corporate
attorney, eventually working with Columbia Pictures in New York, painting and
drawing on weekends. His artwork came to the attention of Betty Parsons and
Carol Dreyfuss and they gave him his first one-man painting show in 1980. In
1984, he was given his first solo museum exhibition at the Spoleto Festival. After
Bianchi’s partner died of AIDS in 1988, he turned his focus to photography,
producing Out of the Studio, a candid portrayal of gay intimacy. Its success led
to producing numerous monographs, including On the Couch, Deep Sex and In
Defense of Beauty. In 1993 Tom co-founded CytoDyn, a biotech company with
the mission of developing new H.I.V./AIDS therapies. Tom was the Director of the
company responsible for funding the research through 2000.
Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head into downtown Chicago and
pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine,
he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island
sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he recalls in
the preface to his latest monograph. “I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly,
I had no idea then that it was a place I would one day call home.” In 1970,
fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited
to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community
of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera, Bianchi documented his friends’
lives in the Pines, amassing an image archive of people, parties and private
moments. These images, published here for the first time, and accompanied by
Bianchi’s moving memoir of the era, record the birth and development of a new
culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie and reverie, Fire Island Pines conjures
a magical bygone era.
These photographs are at once formal and intimate for they
bring both rigor and tenderness to glimpses of real people.

The fashion house of KENZO was started in 1970 as Jungle Jap, a boutique in Paris at Galerie Vivienne where the founder Kenzo Takada,
sold his handmade women’s collection. The flagship KENZO store was
opened at 3 Place des Victoires in 1976, and the brand expanded into
a full Parisian fashion house. In 1993, KENZO joined the LVMH Group.
In 1999, KENZO marked its 30th anniversary and the retirement of
its Artistic Director Kenzo Takada. In July 2011, Carol Lim & Humberto
Leon, founders of the OPENING CEREMONY fashion retail stores and
private label collection were appointed Creative Directors of KENZO.
Toiletpaper book
Toiletpaper is an artists’ magazine created and manufactured by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, born
out of a passion/obsession they both cultivate. This is the first campaign that Toiletpaper have created with a
fashion house. The magazine was founded in 2010 by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari as an exploration of society’s obsession with imagery.

boxed. a visual history and the art of boxing
carlos rolon
The Darwinian elements of survival and harmony have
always attracted writers, philosophers, and artists working in all mediums, specifically, in the sport of boxing.
Sports have always played an important role in the principle and foundation of Latino Culture, particularly in
the Puerto culture and its Diaspora. This is true for the
artist Carlos Rolon. The sweet science played an important role within his family household. Watching a young
Howard Cosell on ABCs Wide World and the infamous
No Mas fight with Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard is how the artist a young age bonded with his father.

the wrinkles of the city: havana cuba
jr & josé parlá
sabine mirlesse
as if it should have been a quarry
In May 2012, JR collaborates with American artist José Parlá on the latest
iteration of The Wrinkles
of the City: a huge mural
installation in Havana,
undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which
JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25
senior citizens who had
lived through the Cuban
revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is of Cuban
descent, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings
and paintings. Parlá’s markings echo the distressed surfaces
of the walls he inscribes, and offer commentary on the lives
of Cuba’s elders; together, JR and Parlá’s murals marvelously
animate a city whose walls are otherwise adorned only by
images of its leaders.
The series As if it should have been a quarry named for the
American poet Robert Frost’s 1954 poem Directive, was shot in
2011 in Iceland, a country in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
positioned directly above a continental divide, making it the site
of frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Inspired by the story of
a small village there whose inhabitants dug themselves out of
the ash of a volcano that erupted without warning one January
morning in 1973, this body of work seeks to investigate the way
in which one reconciles oneself to impermanence through living with a continuity that suggests the infinite, and how a piece
of land can be a reflection of one’s countenance and vice versa,
like maps in conversational flux with one another. Through considering the passage of time in its relation to both physical and
emotional space is to allow for an innate metaphysical inquiry
to be explored—that of our own vulnerability and survival as
possibly found in the landscapes that grow us into being.

urban art
the king of kowloon:
the art of tsang tsou choi
A cultural icon who covered the
streets of Hong Kong with his graffiti for over 35 years, Tsang Tsou
Choi (1921-2007) used a brush and
ink to proclaim himself The King
of Kowloon—the heir to an imaginary birthright that fueled a lifetime of artistic output. With his
signature style, Tsang wrote himself into the collective memory of
a generation caught between British and Chinese rule. He left
behind an oeuvre that includes countless outdoor projects (the
majority now extant only in photographs), myriad works on paper, board and cloth, as well as painted objects.
This milestone publication documents Tsang’s influential practice and enduring legacy, revealing an urban artist, consummate outsider and self-styled emperor whose story is much
broader than the island he called home.

captain rugged
keziah jones | native maqari
Captain Rugged is a multimedia project collaboration between 2 Nigerian artists: Keziah Jones and Native Maqari.
The book is a graphic novel and will come out with a special music card that will contain the url to download the
tracks of Keziah Jones’ CD album of the same name. The
two artists have witnessed the most transformative stories
happening within and around them in the city of Lagos
so it was inevitable that they both attempted to put this
into words and image and sound for an outside audience
in order that they might also get an idea of the character
of the city. After the oil boom years of the ‘70’s, visually, Lagos resembled what can only be described as an unfinished
African utopia; grand projects lay abandoned and subsequently taken over by the homeless, grand motorways that
span the lagoons surrounding the islands of Lagos overrun
by hastily constructed shanty towns on stilts. The city became both futuristic and of the past at the same time. Captain Rugged is set amongst the teeming masses that live in
these in-between places. The only protagonist that Keziah
and Native could conceive of who was surviving on his own
terms in this type of environment was a superhero. This is
due to the fact of the unending harshness of the daily grind
of the inhabitants. But daily grind can also be experienced
as transcendence, because at the end of every day Lagosians
will sit down and ease away their troubles by recounting, to
whomever will listen, the numerous surprising and amazing things they have seen over a beer and some music. For
both artists the city of Lagos will never cease to amaze,
therefore it was not surprising that a superhero called Captain Rugged would appear, because if they didn’t invent
him someone else would have.

Waplington text
Lee Alexander McQueen (1969–2010), CBE, was one of the most
important fashion designers of the last two decades. He was the
recipient of four British Designer of the Year awards, as well as the
CFDA’s International Designer of the Year award, 2003. In 2011, following his death, the Costume Institute in New York organized an
enormously successful retrospective of his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Fire Island Pines Polaroids 1975-1983 Collectors limited edition of 67 numbered copies comes in a special orange
cloth slipcase with a tipped-in cover image, and contains
a fine art giclée print signed and numbered by Tom Bianchi. Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head
into downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique”
magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found
a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island.
“Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by
the photographer,” he recalls in the preface. “I had no idea
it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was
80 [ backlist
a place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of
law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was
invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he
encountered a community of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera, Bianchi documented his friends’ lives in the
Pines, amassing an image archive of people, parties and
private moments. These images, published here for the
first time, and accompanied by Bianchi’s moving memoir of the era, record the birth and development of a new
culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie and reverie, Fire
Island Pines conjures a magical bygone era.
Bart Michiels shows seemingly innocuous landscapes some romantic and beautiful, others somber and desolate - that are in fact the sites of the most barbarous
battles in European history.
Photographer Alexandra Carr met Paz de la Huerta-the actress and Boardwalk Empire star--in New York
in 2007, shortly before Paz became the celebrity she is
today, and they soon agreed to collaborate on a photo
project. They began shooting in the fall of 2008, often
using Paz’s small West Village apartment as a back-
drop--which was mercifully well heated throughout
that especially cold New York winter.
A gorgeous, linen-bound volume, The Birds Didn’t Die
over the Winter explores themes of love, loneliness
and the difficult transition from youth into relative
maturity.

"One could say that Detroit has become America’s
version of an open city. It’s been left undefended
against an onslaught of scrappers, vandals, and
the forces of nature. It’s a city of hundreds, if not
thousands, of empty homes, apartment buildings,
factories, libraries, hospitals, schools, and churches.
All are abandoned and most are unguarded, barely
salvageable, and slated for demolition that gets
delayed year after year".

Greg Gorman put together a collection of more than
200 portraits of young men, some of whom became
famous. An album that reveals the evergreen fascination of youth, when time has yet to obfuscate ingenuousness, melancholic gentleness and, above all, the
beauty that characterises life’s âge d’or. The photographer writes in the introduction: “My photographs have

with vulnerability. When the subject has an unawareness of the camera, he reveals an inward truth, that

his newest works is to renew the genre of sacred
portraiture: "Rather than destroy sacred icons," says

subjects for this series are selected from among his

Nick Haymes first met Gabe Nevins on an editorial
assignment in the summer of 2007. Gabe had just
wrapped up his lead role in Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid
Park, in which he had played a teenage skateboarder
who accidentally kills a security guard. Gabe had never
acted prior to starring in the film; he had heard about
Van Sant’s casting call from a skateboard store and
initially auditioned as an extra. Meeting the teenager,
Haymes recalls: “Initially, Gabe was fairly shy, but it
quickly transpired that he had seen some of my skateboarding images online and an instant friendship was
struck. When the assignment was over, I approached
Gabe about the possibility of working on more photographs as there was something entirely
captivating about him and his energy.” Published in
an edition of 30 copies, this limited edition includes
a numbered and signed photograph by Nick Haymes
and original excerpts from Gabe’s notebooks.
