Black History Month Fact of the Day
On this day in 1945, Jamaican singer, musician and songwriter, Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley was
born. Bob Marley served as a world ambassador for reggae music and sold more than 20 million
records throughout his career—making him the first international superstar to emerge from the socalled Third World country. Known for his poetic lyrics and social and political consciousness, his
international hit, "Redemption Song" was an illustration of Marley's talents as a songwriter. One
line from the song reads: "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can
free our minds."
