Feb 24 ~ 7:30pm The Port Theatre Presents Compagnie Marie Chouinard GYMNOPÉDIES / HENRI MICHAUX: MOVEMENTS Two new works display the unbridled imagination of master choreographer Marie Chouinard. The visually arresting HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVEMENTS features ten dancers forming stunning silhouettes and sequences to mirror projections of drawings by Belgian surrealist Michaux. Chouinard then enters the heart of French master of modernism Érik Satie in GYMNOPÉDIES. While taking turns playing the piano, ten dancers perform loving, sensual, erotic duets to the composer’s haunting work. This performance contains strobe effects and some nudity. He garnered international attention after winning prizes at the Geneva and Sydney International Piano Competitions, and the silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Critics have compared him with Ashkenazy, Horowitz and Rudolph Serkin, placing him in the elite circle of virtuoso pianists. May 3 ~ 2:30pm Opera Nanaimo presents LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT Opera di Concertisti's production of La Fille du Régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) is a quicklypaced opéra comique by Gaetano Donizetti. It begins in the carriage of the Marquise de Berkenfeld on the road to Austria. All hilarity ensues when the Marquise discovers, then adopts, her own illegitimate daughter Marie, and tries to reform her. Arias include “Salut à la France”, and “A mes amis".
