back to take Aqueduct=s GIII Discovery H. in the slop

22. The Twin Creeks Racing Stables and WinStar Farm
colorbearer emerged as a major GI Kentucky Derby
threat with a neck success over Wildcat Red (D=wildcat)
in the track-and-trip GI Florida Derby in March, but was
forced to miss the Triple Crown races after suffering a
hairline fracture of his cannon bone. Fourth with some
trouble in his return at Big Sandy Oct, 12, he stepped
forward markedly in the Clark and could find himself
well placed early here after breaking from the rail.
WinStar=s Commisioner (A.P. Indy) rounds out the
Pletcher troika. Second to Tonalist in the GII Peter Pan
S. in May, he filled the same slot--and came up a head
short of posting the 28-1 upset--in the GI Belmont S.
the following month. The homebred did well to finish a
close third here Jan. 10 after dueling on the front end,
and has every right to step forward. Mrs. Susan Roy=s
Sloane Avenue (Candy Ride {Arg}) is an intriguing
invader with plenty of upside. A nine-length debut
winner going a mile over the Lingfield Polytrack last
February, the Jeremy Noseda pupil bounced back from
an off-the-board stakes try on the Newmarket grass in
May to take a Kempton handicap on the all-weather in
August. He could only manage an eighth-place run in
Belmont=s GIII Hill Prince S. going nine furlongs on soft
grass Oct. 4, and once again returned to winning ways
back on the synthetic in Kempton=s Hyde S. Nov. 19.

going to take on possibly the best dirt horses at the
moment--Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}), Bayern and
California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit)--so I looked here and
saw this race. So [Roy] and I had a chat, and we
decided, >Let=s be brave and go for it.= So here we are.@
He romped in the GII Los Alamitos Derby in July,
bested Toast of New York (Thewayyouare) and older
horses in Del Mar=s GI Pacific Classic S. Aug. 24, and
solidified himself as the GI Breeders= Cup Classic
favorite after

Verdes S. AShared Belief is as classy as classy comes,@
said Hall of Famer Mike Smith. AShared Belief is not a
big horse that you=re going to sit back on and go like
Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}), who was imposing just to
look at. He=s not really that, but he=s extremely athletic
and really, really well-balanced. He=s doing well. He
looks good.@ Smith added, AConquest Two Step is the
one who was 70-1 when I beat him with Shared Belief
in the Malibu, and everyone said, >Who did Shared
Belief beat?= Well, you saw who he beat. The horse
came back and demolished them in the Palos Verdes.@
Pegram, Watson and Weitman=s Hoppertunity (Any
Given Saturday) is the race=s third-most-likely winner.
Last term=s GII Rebel S. hero was a distant second in
the Santa Anita Derby, and was many people=s
Kentucky Derby pick before being scratched from the
race two days prior due to a foot injury. He resurfaced
to be second in a seven-panel optional claimer here Oct.
29 before getting his Grade I win under the Twin Spires
in the Nov. 28 Clark H. Cont. p6

The bay enters off another victory in the GII San
Pasqual S. Jan. 10, but must overcome a rail draw. AI
live in the one hole,@ quipped Hall of Fame trainer Bob
Baffert, who seems to have a penchant for drawing
poorly in big spots. AI don=t know. I=m going to have to
start going to the draw. I=ve always said, >There are two
things you need to get rid of in racing: the one hole and
the last race.= I=d rather have been on the outside and
clear.@
Firing Line makes his first start since that thriller at
Los Al as well. Owned by Arnold Zetcher, the Nov. 30
Del Mar maiden winner was also making his route debut
that day. He stayed on gamely after dueling through
testing early fractions of :21 4/5 and :45 1/5 and also
exchanged bumps with third-place finisher Mr. Z
(Malibu Moon) in the stretch. Hall of Famer Gary
Stevens rides for the first time here. AHe ran very well,@
trainer Simon Callaghan said. AHe got bumped quite a
bit down the lane, but he=s doing well and we=re looking
forward to the race.@ Rock Shandy (Lemon Drop Kid)
proved he belonged with these with a clear-cut second
behind the ultra-impressive Calculator (In Summation) in
the GIII Sham S. Jan. 10. He made his three prior starts
on grass, including a third-place finish in the GIII Cecil
B. DeMille S. at Del Mar Nov. 30. Peter Miller trains for

We=ve known that all along, but sometimes it=s easier to

starting to fulfill the promise that we thought he had.
He=s a very talented horse.@ Crossed Sabres Farm=s
Lochte (Medaglia d=Oro) was dismissed at 39-1 in this
race last year, but slipped up the rail and scooted away
to blow up the tote over Imagining (Giant=s Causeway).
Second in Santa Anita=s GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March
and third behind Wise Dan (Wiseman=s Ferry) in the GI
Maker=s 46 Mile at Keeneland in April, his form tailed
off a bit in subsequent tries before he annexed
September=s The Vid S. After suffering three more
losses--including a fifth in the Ft. Lauderdale--Lochte
bounced back with a head success in the GIII Tampa
Bay S. two weeks ago. AI ran him over there just for a
prep for this race,@ trainer Marcus Vitali said. AIt was all
based on how he came out of the race. He came out of
it phenomenal. I gave him a few days off after he ran,
and when he came back off the race his exercise girl
told me he=s hair, teeth and eyeballs. We=re going to try
to defend our title.@
Imagining annexed the GI Man O= War S. last May in
his first start after the Gulfstream Park Turf before
finish sixth in the GI Manhattan S. in June. He finished

Beyer Speed Figure going 6 1/2 furlongs at Belmont
Oct. 25, could be a popular alternative. Ambitiously
spotted for his second start with a very wide draw in
the nine-furlong GII Remsen S. Nov. 29, the Cheyenne
Stables colorbearer pressed eventual winner Leave the
Light On (Horse Greeley) from his outside and tired in
the stretch to finish a well-beaten fourth. "We
absolutely think he wants two turns," Kiaran
McLaughlin's assistant trainer Arthur Magnuson said.
"[The Remsen] was only his second start; we went
from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles--that's a lot to ask-and he ran very well. We were very pleased with his
race. He's [still eligible for a non-winners of one], but
he can run with this kind." A pair of sons of Blame
head into the deep end following maiden victories.

GIII Withers S. - El Kabeir is a very deserving favorite
and will be awfully tough to beat with a repeat
performance of his last two efforts, but there is still
room for some of the others to make an impact with a
leap forward here. The well-bred Far From Over
certainly fits the bill with an ultra-game debut win at a
somewhat surprising 5-1 (considering his connections)
going two turns over the inner Dec. 12. Campaigned by
the same tandem as 2012 GI CashCall Futurity winner
Violence, the $550,000 KEESEP yearling purchase has
been working smartly since shipping to Pletcher's Palm
Beach Downs base, including a bullet five furlongs in
1:01 (1/9) Jan. 25. Far From Over, produced by a
graded stakes placed daughter of GI Go For Wand H.
heroine Aldiza (Storm Cat), has every right to move
forward in his second attempt at what has to be a fair
number. Not thrilled about losing Irad to the rail horse,
but Franco has been riding in good form at the Big A
this winter as well. Selection: #2 Far From Over (5-1).
GIII Robert B. Lewis S. - Donegal Racing's Rock Shandy
still has plenty of work to do before being tabbed as
the next Dullahan (third >12 Derby) or Paddy O'Prado
(third >10 Derby), but he looked like he may be on his
way after a very solid runner-up effort behind
stablemate Calculator (he was 4 1/4 lengths clear of
the third-place finisher that day) while making his dirt
debut in the GIII Sham S. Produced by a half-sister to
Brahms and La Reina (his second dam is champion
Queena), Rock Shandy has a nice foundation of grass
races, including a useful third in Del Mar's GIII Cecil B.
DeMille S. Nov. 30. The bay continues to improve with
each effort (49, 71, 75 & 90 Beyers), is tactical enough
to secure a good position, and may have an edge in
terms of fitness over the comebacking GI Los Alamitos
Futurity one-two Dortmund and Firing Line.
Selection: #2 Rock Shandy (6-1).
GIII Withers S. - Let=s be honest, El Kabeir should really
win this race. He lays over this field on paper and may
have a pace edge, but I=ll be stubborn and take a shot
against him. Far From Over intrigues me partly because
of how ordinary his debut was. Dismissed at 5-1 for his
local one-mile seventy-yard bow Dec. 12 despite being
a Todd Pletcher firster who brought $550,000 at
Keeneland September, the bay took over pacesetting
duties down the backside and dueled into upper
stretch, but looked certain to be swallowed late.
Headed by the favorite, Far From Over dug deep to
claw back the victory by a nose and gallop out in front.
Third finisher Tencendur came back to win and will also
contest the Withers. Considering his odds, it seems
possible that Far From Over may not have been fully
cranked for his debut and may have more in the tank.
By Blame out of the GSP A.P. Indy mare Alchemist who
enjoyed a route of ground, the bay ridgling is a half to
MGISP And Why Not (Street Cry {Ire}). Alchemist is out
of Grade I winner Aldiza (Storm Cat), who also
produced Altesse (A.P. Indy), a Grade III winner at nine
panels. The more ground, the better for Far From Over.
Selection: #2 Far From Over (5-1).
GIII Robert B. Lewis S. - Dortmund was all the rage
(and still is) following his head-turning Churchill
allowance romp, but a little of the mystique was lost
when he was only able to beat Firing Line by a head at
3-5 in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity. He did have one of
the easiest trips in racing, sitting behind the runner-up
and Mr. Z as they dueled through fractions of :21.98,
:45.29 and 1:09.64. But it was still a fairly tall task for
Dortmund, having debuted only some six weeks earlier
and being asked to go two turns for the first time-especially at Los Al, where the turns might have been
too tight for the hulking chestnut. Firing Line has plenty
of upside and promise too, but Dortmund is supposed
to be the best horse in this race, and I expect him to
show it if he=s close to ready. Selection: #6 Dortmund
(4-5).

MRC PUTS NUMP=S MULTIPLE MEDICATION
VIOLATION PENALTY SYSTEM INTO ACTION

Trainers Scott Lake and Hector Garcia unwittingly
became part of racing regulatory history in late January
when they were the first horsemen to receive additional
suspensions from the Maryland Racing Commission,
which was using the guidelines of the Multiple
Medication Violation Penalty System that is part of the
National Uniform Medication Program (NUMP).
Maryland became fully compliant with all four
sections of NUMP Jan. 1.
Ed Martin, president of the Association of Racing
Commissioners International (RCI), which developed the
model rules in the NUMP, confirmed that Lake and
Garcia were the first horsemen to cross point
thresholds for multiple violations and trigger the
supplemental penalties. While Martin said it was a
noteworthy moment, it wasn=t a happy occasion
because it meant that medication rules were being
broken.
Mike Hopkins, executive director of the Maryland
Racing Commission, acknowledged the significance of
the added penalties and said it showed that the NUMP
system worked.
AWhen this whole process started about 15 years ago
with the RMTC (Racing & Medication Testing
Consortium), the goal was for some uniformity in a
number of areas,@ Hopkins said. AThis is a positive step

Lake received an extra 60 days to go with the 60
days and $1,000 fine he was assessed by Maryland=s
stewards for post-race positives for the anabolic steroid
stanozolol in December. The four penalty points Lake
was handed for the Maryland
infraction were added to four
points he had on his record
from a post-race stanozolol
positive at Penn National on
June 11, 2014. The total of
eight points triggered the
second 60-day suspension.
Lake has appealed the
120-day suspension that was
due to begin Feb. 5.
Hopkins said he hopes the
Maryland Racing Commission
will be able to hear Lake=s
appeal at its March meeting.

Garcia had a total of four
NYRA/Coglianese
post-race positives in
December and January and
the multiple medication violation penalty points that
came with those cases increased his suspension by 240
days. Maryland=s stewards handed out a total of 150
days of suspensions and $2,000 in fines for the four
positives--three for stanozolol and one for the sedative
xylazine. The suspensions, which must be served
consecutively, will keep Garcia away from training
through Feb. 29, 2016.
After the suspensions were announced, the Maryland
Jockey Club notified Garcia and suspended trainer Juan
Vazquez, for whom Garcia worked, that they had to
remove their horses from MJC property within two
weeks.
NUMP was formalized in 2012 to replace the often
disparate rules in place in the nation=s racing states.
The Jockey Club has long advocated for uniform
national standards for medications, testing and
penalties.
At its annual Round Table Conference in 2013 and
2014 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Jockey Club officials,
led by chairman Ogden Mills Phipps, said they would
seek federal legislation if states did not adopt the
NUMP standards.
The Jockey Club has promoted the concept of an
independent third-party body, such as the United States
Anti-Doping Agency, which handles Olympic testing,
overseeing racing=s program.
In his closing remarks at the 2014 Round Table,
Phipps said that the organization=s Board of Stewards
had authorized staff to develop and implement a
national legislative strategy.
ATo be clear, this broadened strategy will include
federal legislation,@ Phipps said. AWe have also
instructed The Jockey Club management team to
further investigate a relationship with the independent
and well-respected body like USADA. USADA will bring
credibility, integrity, and objectivity to our sport.@

director of The Jockey Club, said that the organization
is following the Stewards> mandate.
AThat work is in process,@ he said.
According to The Jockey Club, which closely follows
these matters, with Maryland on board, eight of the 33
racing jurisdictions have
adopted all four phases of
NUMP. The NUMP package is
made up of a schedule of
thresholds for 26 approved
therapeutic medications;
third-party administration of
Lasix; use of an
RMTC-approved lab; the
multiple medication violation
penalty system. Of the eight
states that account for
approximately half of the
races and 83% of the graded
stakes in the U.S., only

Maryland and New Jersey
have implemented all of the NUMP.
Lake=s second 60-day suspension is an ideal example
of the penalty program working because the infractions
occurred in different states.
The RCI maintains the national database for the points
lists.
Iuliano said that some progress has been made since
Phipps made his comments at the Round Table and
pointed to states that had adopted pieces of the NUMP.
However, Iuliano said small victories and partial
implementation of NUMP standards are not enough.
AOur main objective,@ he said, Ais to ensure that we=ve
got a single uniform medication rule book and penalty
structure that is fairly and independently applied to all
the connections--owners, trainers, breeders, etc.--and
that it is enforced without variation. Naturally, we=re
very keen on areas where there appears to be
non-uniformity, which creeps into the process.@
Iuliano said The Jockey Club applauds states, such as
Arkansas, North Dakota and Maryland, that recently
began following the NUMP, but that a number of states
are missing one or more of the elements.
AWhen you look at that scorecard there is variation,@
he said. AA lot of it is timing. That is, one aspect of the
uniformity initiative may come on line followed after
several months with a second component of it,
followed perhaps by a third and a fourth.
AWe certainly don=t want to discourage any
jurisdiction from adopting it, but we continue to
encourage jurisdictions that when they look at these
rules they have to be adopted in their totality. And they
have to be put into place so there is very clear
instructions that can be presented to everyone who has
a connection to a Thoroughbred.@
New York, has implemented two of the NUMP
standards--the controlled therapeutic medication
schedule and the third party administration of Lasix-and is moving toward adding more of the program.

However, New York=s Controlled Therapeutic
Medication Schedule differs from the NUMP because it
features restricted administration times in addition to
thresholds.
Lee Park, the spokesman for the New York State
Gaming Commission, said that the New York Drug
Testing and Research Program at Morrisville State
College applied for accreditation in 2013 and has met
all substantive technical requirements for the RMTC
Laboratory Accreditation Program. The last element
necessary for final accreditation regards annual
research, which the New York Laboratory is addressing
and expects to complete soon.
Park said that the multiple medication violation
penalty program was approved as a proposed rule in
December and is moving through New York=s
rule-making process. It must be published the New York
State Register and subject to a 45-day public comment
period before the commission can consider adopting it
as a rule.

Fifth in the GI Ogden Phipps S. at Belmont behind
Close Hatches (First Defence) and Princess of Sylmar
(Majestic Warrior) June 7, she defeated the latter rival
next out to capture the GI Delaware H. July 12. The
mare added a wire-to-wire, tour-de-force victory in the
GI Beldame S. Sept. 27 two starts later, earning a spot
in the starting gate for the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff.
AShe=s special,@ said Dubb. AShe was bred by the
Wygods, and if you look back, her third dam is [1990
champion juvenile filly] Meadow Star (Meadowlake). So
she has the blood in her, and we were successful in
figuring out that she wanted to go long. She had a few
issues when we got her, but we fixed them, and we
never dreamt she would be what she is.@
Following a ninth-place finish in the Distaff, Belle
Gallantey brought $750,000 at the Fasig-Tipton
November sale from buyer SF Bloodstock LLC. She was
subsequently leased back to Dubb and Bethlehem
Stables for her two-start campaign in 2015.
AI appreciate that the purchasers were game and
wanted to give her every opportunity to continue her
career,@ the owner acknowledged. ABut she really
needed a proper rest--three or four months--to recover
from that experience, on top of a nice campaign last
year.@
SF Bloodstock, who mutually agreed to retire Belle
Gallantey, will retain her breeding rights. While Dubb
now parts ways with his mare, he said he holds great
interest in seeing her future foals.
AIt=s bittersweet,@ he concluded. AIt will be a missing
stall in the barn. I=ll always remember the stall she
stood in, but this is a happy ending. She=s six years old
now, so it=s time. On top of that, the trainer reported to
me after the race that he felt that she was a little bit in
heat. So I think the stars lined up and there was a
message that was sent to us.@
Bred by Pam and Martin Wygod in Kentucky, Belle
Gallantey sold for $10,000 as a Keeneland September
yearling and progressed to a $30,000 Pegasus February
juvenile purchase by Stuart Carmichael, Peter Tom &
Glen Todd, whose colors she carried in her first three
career starts at Hastings Park.
Belle Gallantey retires with a record of 45-9-12-7 for
a total of $1,114,270 in earnings.
DERBY TRIAL RENAMED, MOVED TO DERBY
DAY
Churchill Downs will honor Hall of Fame rider Pat Day
with a race named in his honor during its 2015 Spring
Meet, which spans 38 days from Saturday, Apr. 25
through Saturday, June 27. A sextet of Grade I races
highlight the nine-week stand, including the 141st
runnings of the Kentucky Derby and Longines Kentucky
Oaks. The two stalwarts anchor a 25-race stakes lineup
that emphasizes big-event days cumulatively worth
$8.05 million, a $375,000 increase or 5% jump from
2014. The most significant change to the stakes menu
involves the now former GIII Derby Trial, which has
been moved from opening night to Kentucky Derby
Day, renamed the Pat Day Mile and boosted by
$50,000 from $150,000 to $200,000. AThere=s no
better way for Churchill Downs to show its appreciation
and honor Pat Day--a legendary jockey, great
ambassador of horse racing, pillar in the Louisville
community and a man known for his devout faith--than
to pay tribute with a race named in his honor on
Kentucky Derby Day, America=s greatest day of racing,@
said Churchill Downs President Kevin Flanery. Day
added, AIt=s a tremendous honor to have a race at any
time or any kind named in your honor-- that=s an honor
in and of itself. But to have a race such as the Derby
Trial moved to Kentucky Derby Day and have it
renamed the Pat Day Mile is out of the park. That=s just
unbelievable.@ Of the schedule change, Ben Huffman,
Churchill Downs Racetrack=s Director of Racing and
Racing Secretary, added, AWe=ve been kicking around
the idea of moving the Derby Trial to Kentucky Derby
Day for a couple of years now because the race is
clearly not a significant step to the Derby anymore with
the way horsemen train their horses today. We revere
the storied history of the race, but ultimately feel that a
one-turn mile race with familiar 3-year-olds that aren=t
up to the mile-and-a-quarter distance could prove to be
very popular with both horsemen and fans alike on
Kentucky Derby Day. We think this really bolsters an
already substantial Derby Day card.@ The addition of the
Pat Day Mile to Kentucky Derby Day means that seven
graded stakes races cumulatively worth $4.05 million-the richest in the track=s storied history--will help
comprise the 13-race Derby Day card Saturday, May 2.
The Oaks Day card features six stakes cumulatively

The S$3.05-million (US$2.25 million) CECF Singapore
Cup, the richest race ever to be staged in the country,
has attracted 11 entries from four countries for the

November sale and in her first appearance for those
connections, proved a handy winner of the GIII
Marshua=s River S. at Gulfstream Jan. 10. Joining the
6-year-old on the trip to Singapore will be stablemate

third in last year=s GI Santa Anita Oaks, will be saddled
for the first time by English trainer Roger Varian.
Nicolas Clement, the elder France-based brother of
Christophe, will also be represented in the CEFC
Singapore Cup by Ming Zhi Cosmos (Fr) (Duke of
Marmalade {Ire}), popular winner of the G3 Premio
Sergio Cumani in Milan last September. Australian
trainer John Thompson is two-fisted for the Cup, as he
will saddle a pair of French-bred stayers, both by Le
Havre (Ire). Auvray (Fr) won the 3000-meter G2 Qatar
Prix Chaudenay at Longchamp Oct. 4 and later that
evening topped the Arqana Arc Sale on a bid of
i800,000 from the CHC=s Michael Wallace. Orbec (Fr)
won the Listed Grand Prix de Clairefontaine over 2500
meters of heavy turf at Deauville Aug. 29 and was the
third highest-priced lot at the Arc sale at i600,000.
The three horses trained at Kranji by Michael

ARB TO REVIEW STEROID RULE

McGauran has announced the launch of a review into
the series of decisions that led to a colt from the Magic
Millions Gold Coast sale being
declared positive to an anabolic
steroid only for the incriminated
substance, altrenogest, to be
eventually ruled as not
belonging to this category.
Alternogest is a synthetic
hormone notably contained in
the drug Regu-Mate, which is
commonly used to regulate
cycles and help maintain
pregnancies in mares. It is also
considered to have a calming
effect on horses.
"Why a substance was found
to be an anabolic steroid when

CHAPA CASE SET FOR MARCH

The State of Texas=s criminal case against jockey
Roman Chapa for unlawful influence on racing has been
reset to Mar. 18.
Chapa, 43, appeared in Harris County District Court
in Houston Friday to face charges that he illegally used
an electrical device on a horse in a race Jan. 17 at Sam
Houston Race Park.

The stewards acted after accusations surfaced that a
photograph appeared to show that Chapa had a buzzer
in his left hand near the end of Quiet Acceleration=s
victory in the $50,000 Richard King Handicap. The
suspension was handed down while the Texas Racing
Commission investigates the allegations. Robert Elrod, a
spokesman for the racing commission, said Friday that
a hearing on the matter will likely take place within the
next month.
Chapa has twice been punished for similar incidents
involving devices to shock a horse, often called buzzers
or machines. He was suspended for 19 months in
1993 and served four years of a five-year suspension
for a 2007 violation before being granted a
probationary license in New Mexico.
In the probable cause statement, Jeffrey Green of
the Texas Department of Public Safety said that track
photographer Jack Coady told him he was contacted by
Chapa the day after the race and asked to take the
photograph off the track=s website. Green said in his
statement that Chapa told him he had never seen the
photograph or had reached out to Coady. However,
Green said that when Chapa allowed him to look at his
phone he could see that a call had been made and a
text sent to Coady. Green said that a copy of the
photograph was in a recently deleted file on Chapa=s
phone.

celebrating his first stakes win on the NYRA circuit. "I
wanted her to sit back right behind the pace a little bit,
a little closer than the last time [I rode her]. She
responded well, she was a little aggressive on the first
turn, but I got her to settle down. On the second turn
she got a little more aggressive. No one else was
pressuring the pace, so I just let her out to the three

Mary Kubota Passes Away:
Mary Kubota, a longtime trainer and popular racing
official, died Wednesday of lung cancer at her home in
Renton, Washington. Kubota spent nearly three
decades as a trainer, learning the profession under
Washington Hall of Fame Trainer Wayne Branch before
taking out her license in the late 1970s. She also had
stints as a veterinarian=s assistant with Dr. John Traber
and Dr. Gary Bergsma. Kubota, 62, worked the last 12
years for the Washington Horse Racing Commission,
first as a clerk/identifier in the receiving barn and later
as an association clocker. Her husband of 44 years,
Allan, and daughters Chrissi Reeves of Bellingham and
Angie Kubota-Wolbert of Renton survives Ms. Kubota.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb.

Pomellato to Stand in Germany:
Pomellato (Ger) (Big Shuffle--Passata {Fr}, by Polar
Falcon) has been repatriated to stand at Gestut
Westerberg in Germany after holding court for several
years in Iran reported Racing Post. The Gestut Hof
Ittlingen homebred reported home a winner for trainer
Peter Schiergen in two of his three career starts
including the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte in France
and the G3 Maurice Lacroix Trophy at Baden-baden. He
finished fourth in between those efforts in his only
attempt at the highest level in the G1 Gran Criterium at
San Siro in Italy. Injury derailed further racecourse
appearances and Pomellato stood for one season in
France before being moved to Iran where he stood for
an Austrian/Iranian syndicate. Despite only siring 11
foals in his first crop, they include the MGSP Another
Party (Fr), the German Listed winner Kamellata (Fr) and
two other stakes-placed winners. The 10-year-old is
scheduled to arrive at Gestut Westerberg in March. A
fee will be announced later.
Williams Lands Protectionist Ride:
Leading Melbourne-based jockey Craig Williams is set
to be reunited with G1 Melbourne Cup hero
Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) when the 5-year-old
returns in the G2 Peter Young S. Feb. 28, Australian
Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett announced. The
question of the Kris Lees trainee=s next rider had been a
hotly debated topic following the horse=s cozy win in a
Newcastle trial earlier this week, with Hugh Bowman in
the irons. Williams had previously ridden the German
import to a fourth-place in the G2 Herbert Power S.,
before British ace Ryan Moore took over for the G1
Melbourne Cup.
Lovett also indicated that Protectionist=s next aim
could be the G1 Australian Cup Mar. 14 over 2000
meters, or the G1 BMW Mar. 28 over 2400 meters,
depending on the horse=s performance on his seasonal
bow.

Barrie Griffiths=s debutante winner Heatherly (Aus)
(Lonhro {Aus}) is likely to be stepped up straight to
Group 1 company following her out-of-the-ordinary
display at Moonee Valley Friday. The filly was sent off
the odds-on favorite on the back of a Flemington trial
that had already turned several heads, and overcame an
outside draw to grab an early lead. Jockey Damian Lane
gave her the go-ahead entering the straight, and the
juvenile responded emphatically to score unextended by
1 3/4 lengths.
AShe=s paid up for the Blue Diamond so we=ll take her
home and if she bounces out of this race well, that=s
definitely on the radar,@ trainer Mathew Ellerton told
racing.com. Lane was equally upbeat about the
newcomer, saying, AAYou see so many who trial well
