Emergency over
FREMANTLE HOSPITAL’S Emergency Department
was sent off in true Freo style Tuesday—with a protest.
Locals and pollies gathered to lament the loss of the
service, which has been transferred 12km—20 minutes
in light traffic, 40 in peak hour—to the new Fiona
Stanley Hospital in Murdoch. But Emergency isn’t all
that’s being lost—and when you learn what else has
gone, it’s enough to give you the ... See our story, p3.
Freo merger
looks doomed
• Going...
• Gone. No more Emergency Dept.
by EDDIE ALBRECHT
and STEVE GRANT
AT the time of going to press,
just four ballots were needed
to ensure the validity of a
referendum that seeks to kill off
the East Fremantle-Fremantle
merger.
somewhere between 80 and 90 per
cent of returns will be “no” votes.
Although town mayor Jim
O’Neill told an electors’ meeting
earlier this week that premier Colin
Barnett had warned he would
simply try a different tack to force
an amalgamation, Mr Seligmann
says he’ll use the result to widen
already-apparent divisions within
the Liberal party over the issue:
“We will go to the government
and pressure some of the ministers
who have already expressed some
reservations, and say the 80 per cent
to 90 per cent of the people who
voted—the people who voted you
in—are opposed to mergers.
“Have a look at Queensland
and what happens when you stop
listening to the people.”
Meanwhile, Kwinana’s “no
Cockburn merger” also looks like it
will achieve an official result.
Mosman Park mayor Ron Norris
says with the Kwinana-Cockburn
and East Fremantle-Fremantle
mergers looking likely to go belly-
up, there’ll be a knock-on effect and
he thinks the entire process might
now grind to a complete halt.
His tiny town is set to be
swallowed into the mega-city
of Riversea. “It’s the domino
effect,” he says. “Where one of the
amalgamations is destabilised or
stopped, it has a knock-on effect to
others.”
If the mergers go down it’s not
known what impact that will have
on planned boundary changes,
which are handled separately.
Palmyra and Bicton have already
been removed from Melville by
governor’s orders, so if the Freo/
East Freo merger falls apart they’ll
be homeless.
New submissions would have to
go to the local government advisory
board, and at Cockburn’s annual
electors meeting last Tuesday,
CEO Stephen Cain warned Freo
might still go for North Coogee
and Hamilton Hill if his council’s
merger with Kwinana is also killed
by the latter’s poll, as expected.

The WA electoral commission
says it’ll be “amazing” if the poll
falls short, with a ballot box at the
council chamber yet to be cleared
and, at the time of writing, two
days’ of mail still to come in.
For the result of the referendum
to be valid, more than half of all
eligible voters in the town must
return their ballots.
In recent weeks antiamalgamation campaigners have
been pounding pavements, strongarming neighbours and running
full-page ads in the Herald.
They’d thought they’d just about
done it when mid-week they were
blind-sided by an obscure rule about
invalid votes.
Even though the commission’s
website had been keeping a
progressive tally of all ballots
received, only valid ballots would
count towards reaching the magic
halfway number.
“No” campaign leader,
retired resources executive Bruce
Seligmann, was livid.
“It’s absolutely disgusting that
the figures on the website have been
misleading,” he told the Herald.
With returns slowing to a trickle
and all votes needing to be back by
Saturday February 7, his group was
advised to try to rustle up another
100 just to be sure. But when the
Herald spoke with Chris Evans
from the commission Thursday
afternoon, he said it would be
“amazing” if the poll fell short.
He says just 87 votes have been
deemed invalid from 2674 returned
so far. With 5178 ballots issued by
the commission, just four more need
to come back to hit the target.
Mr Seligmann predicts

THE 1970s role-playing craze
Dungeons & Dragons is back and it’s
in Cockburn.
A complex board game requiring
imagination and dice with far too
many sides, D&D sparked a moral
panic among America’s conservative
Christians who thought letting people
pretend to be elvish wizards was
satanic.
Now we’re a little more
enlightened—the religious kooks have
since turned their gaze to the antiChrist that is Harry Potter—and the
game’s valued for helping imagination
and problem-solving abilities, and even
tough guy Vin Diesel plays it. There are
free D&D game sessions every Monday
arvo at Cockburn Youth Centre, along
with drama, arts and sportier stuff like
dodgeball for the more athletically
inclined on other days of the week. The
schedule’s at www.cockburn.wa.gov.au/

MLC Lynn MacLaren will

a beachside rally Sunday
morning on February

government’s latest tactic
to reduce shark attacks.
Late last year the WA
government tweaked its
imminent threat policy,
renaming it serious threat,
and stating any large shark
spotted dawdling about the
coastline during the day was
fair game for armed officials.
Ms MacLaren says its a
cull under another name,
and reckons Mr Barnett’s
harbouring a vendetta
against sharks reminiscent
of Captain Ahab from Moby

Eighty-three search warrants
were issued by detectives
and local and district police,
resulting in the seizure of heroin,
amphetamines, ecstasy, firearms
and ammunition.
Ninety-seven people were
charged or cautioned in relation
to 217 offences, including fraud,
stealing and intent to supply
drugs. Operation First Edition
was organised in response to
an increase in crimes such as
burglaries and thefts, which
police believe are linked to the
sale of illicit drugs.
Inspector Peter Branchi says
one of the raided homes was
protected by a “makeshift trap”.
“They seemed to be expecting
trouble of some kind, and it
is very lucky that none of our
officers were injured. People
involved with illicit drugs tend
to attract trouble to themselves,
and it is concerning that such a
crude trap had been set up.”
Mr Branchi adds useful
intelligence was gathered: “A
low-level drug dealer can have a
noticeable impact on their local
community due to their local
customers committing burglary

and stealing offences to pay for
their drugs, so when we see an
increase in such crimes we know
it is likely due to increased drugrelated activity,” he says.
“Targeting the ‘end of the
line’ drug suppliers and their
customers is an important part
of tackling the bigger drug
syndicates that exist.”

AFTER 39 years Fremantle
Hospital’s emergency
department is no more.
Relied
“The specialist in charge of
the gastroenterology unit relied
heavily on these specialist nurses
to carry out his instructions.
None of this expertise is
available now.”
Mr Robbie fears people
will have little option but to
seek private gastroenterology
services.
“But you can’t see them
straight away ... you need to
make an appointment three
months out,” he says. “If you
have a flare up what are you
going to do in the interim?
“It’s not a public service
any more. It’s disgraceful
that a country this affluent
can’t provide a service for this
debilitating condition which is
growing. It affects people of all
ages.”
Kirsty Robbie says things
started winding down months
ago: before Christmas she could
not access the unit by phone
and had to visit Fremantle’s
emergency department.
“It’s a huge waste of
resources,” she says, “chewing
up the triage nurse’s time,
then the on-duty doctor then
eventually the specialist,
whereas these IBD nurses are
specialists and trained in that
area. You can’t really buy that
and they are really quick with

by the closure
of the unit’s
telephone
service.

“Fremantle
McGurk
had a help
line that was
pretty much available 24/7.
There is no help line at Fiona
Stanley despite noises to the
contrary.
“When you have chronic
diarrhoea the last thing you
want to do is go out.”
Ms Wilson says when she
phoned the Fremantle service
on Tuesday a recorded message
told her to head to her GP or to
Fiona Stanley. When she phoned
Fiona Stanley she was asked
whether she was an inpatient
or outpatient, directed to the
healthdirect phone line and
eventually informed she would
need to visit either her GP or
present to emergency.
A Fiona Stanley Hospital
spokesperson says recruitment
of a gastroenterology clinical
nurse specialist to provide a
phone service is under way
and should be “resolved in the
coming weeks”.
On Tuesday a small but
passionate group of protestors—
augmented by a handful of
hospital staff, politicians and
four security guards—marked
the closure of Fremantle’s
emergency department.
Labor health shadow Roger
Cook repeated the pledge he’d
made in last week’s Herald that a
future Labor government would
re-open an emergency service
at Fremantle, though not at the
same level.
“We’ll ensure after the 2017
election that you can come
to Fremantle for emergency
service,” he told the gathering.
“Whether that’s an extended GP
service or a curtailed emergency
department in the hospital we’ll
wait and see.
“Why should Fremantle lose
after-hours service? This is an
international city, a gateway to
the state and should have some
sort of late-night care.”
Too far
Fremantle Labor MP Simone
McGurk fears Fiona Stanley is
simply too far for many.
“Fremantle is home to some
very vulnerable people and I
believe many of these people
simply won’t go to Fiona
Stanley,” she told the protestors.
“About 50 per cent of the
60,000 people that used the
emergency department last year
didn’t come by ambulance, they
came under their own steam.
Some won’t make it to Fiona
Stanley and that concerns me.”
When asked whether
Fremantle’s new emphasis on
elective surgery may lead to
better outcomes, Ms McGurk
says she hopes so but reminds
readers of the government’s
closure of Kaleeya maternity
hospital.
Federal Labor MP Melissa
Parke received the loudest
applause when she stated the
closure was a short-sighted
decision which “will cost the
government more in the longterm”.

And while the loss of the ED
has generated the most heat and
comment, it is the closure of
specialist services such as renal
and pain management units that
is devastating patients.
The closure of the inflamed
bowel disease unit in particular
has incensed people.
“Patients in these specialist
units don’t mind the move to
Fiona Stanley Hospital but they
are disappointed the level of
service at Fiona Stanley is not
up to the standard of Fremantle
Hospital,” says Alan Robbie,
whose 38-year-old daughter
Kirsty suffers Crohn’s Disease.
“We used to be able to

priorities, and which does not fully
visualise the impact of such a severe
increase in density on an already
bulging infrastructure.

Who in their

EAST FREMANTLE residents
need to make sure they vote
NO to the amalgamation with
Fremantle council.
Hopefully if East Fremantle gets
to keep its independence, the Barnett
government may slip through a
change and include Palmyra and
Bicton with East Fremantle—(wishful
thinking) as this would make more
sense than including Palmyra and
Bicton with Fremantle.
Why should we all suffer because
the present government have wasted
money in some areas and is making
the ordinary person pay for its overspending.
The amalgamation of councils
should have gone to the polls to give
people a say on whether they want
it or not, not slip it through—a bit
dishonest.
Melville council did not send out
some notice about it—whoever wrote
the pamphlet did not write it very
clear as it did not make much sense,
or maybe this was what it wanted.
There was some sort of postal vote
(never heard the outcome of this)—
probably it was just to keep the
ratepayers quiet.

Any form of human activity

the end of the last remaining native

Trail bike riding will bring a
crowd of daredevil mentality people
and all their followers in great
numbers—it would be impossible
to keep out motorbikes and other
disturbing factors—into what is a
small area already threatened by
vandalism and neglect
If the council really has the
interest of its constituents in mind, a
much more worthwhile and longterm benefit to the people would be
the clean-up and regeneration of the
original environment. It could be a
unique opportunity to benefit future
generations and save the highly
endangered coastal bushland flora

Such a project could involve

Such a project would be world’s

THE state government is being
short-sighted in closing down our
local emergency department in
the Fremantle Hospital.
The expanding population in
Fremantle, and in suburbs to the
south and east will soon require more
of these facilities, not less. This local
ED is already set up and staffed with
excellent medicos.
If someone has heart or
respiratory problems, or is bleeding
heavily, the length of time to get
them to qualified help is crucial.
Having to drive to Murdoch will add
delay to these situations. It is not too
late for the government to reconsider,
and keep the Freo Hospital ED open
for another year, while it consults
with the community.

The brouhaha between
environmental community
groups, which has drawn in both
Melville council and the WA
parks and wildlife department,
centres on the Burke Drive
entrance to the park.
According to Friends of
Attadale Parks and Amenities
Area spokesman Gary Crawford,
volunteer group Swan Estuary
Reserves Action Group
instigated the push to poison the
grass, predominantly couch and
buffalo, so sedges and natives
could be planted.
He says the group received
the blessing of the council to
“restore” the area, while the
department, after viewing the
area, also gave tacit support to
an “ongoing weed management
program”.
However, Mr Crawford
says the area in question is an
important resting area for senior
citizens, mums and joggers as
it’s near the footpath and is the
only area where they can sit in
shade.
He’s appalled at what he says
is unnecessary poisoning, when
other areas of the park are in
more urgent need of attention.
He urges a more co-operative
approach between the area’s
environmental groups.
The area in question is
managed by the department.
DPaW staff were unable
to respond to questions from
the Herald as most were busy
fighting fires around WA, while
the Swan Estuary volunteers
were formulating a reply as the

I AM writing to you to
express my concern at what
I understand is a proposal
as part of the Kings Square
development to make the
Fremantle City Library a
lower-ground level facility.
letters
show the importance of a library
as a community space and the
need for it to be fully integrated
into the urban space, not tucked
away. Of course quiet areas of a
library are important but there
is no reason these cannot be
incorporated into a dynamic
visible community hub.
A visible library is likely to
attract more visitors and this
creates more potential clients
for surrounding retailers and
businesses. On my recent visit
to Fremantle it was clear many
businesses are struggling and I
would suggest that making the
public library invisible will not
assist in attracting customers.
This proposal for the placement
of Fremantle Library in a lowerground floor space should be
reconsidered in the light of the
worldwide literature on libraries
and community, the success
of other WA public libraries
in integrating community
spaces with the library and
previous awarded initiatives
by the Fremantle Library which
successfully brought together the
library and the community in a
community space.
The public library should be
a highly visible centrepiece for
community activity for citizens of
all ages and should not be buried
below ground and out of sight.

the proposal to tuck away as a

herald
new library which is such a vital
community facility.
This is an old-world view
which is countered by literature
from around the world which
suggests libraries can be the hub of
community activity.
I recently visited two
libraries in WA—Albany and
Grove Precinct—both of which
displayed an amazing community
connection by being physically
visible with a direct connection to
community spaces. In the case of
the Grove the water-wise gardens
and pools and in the case of
Albany with its wide verandahs
opening onto the town square
were amazing opportunities for
patrons, young and old to utilise
the facilities and to have a direct
connection to outdoor community
spaces.

You are being given the opportunity to have a

I find it really offensive that as a resident within
Cockburn, I can vote on amalgamation but not
on changes of boundaries, which will put my
suburb into Fremantle, renowned for its neglect of
residents’ needs or wishes, little or no support for
community groups and its dying commercial centre.
Yes, amalgamation has been in the pipeline for
some years, but many residents have not grasped
the real disadvantages of the proposed system,
especially the change in voter representation.
These enlarged local government areas will
have only eight councillors to speak up for a much
bigger population. What seems to have escaped
most people also is that this is really a long-term
Machiavellian plot to satisfy the premier’s whim to
get the Roe Highway extension built.

THE CEO of Melville city council
has denied claims his senior staff

“The only information given to the
[conference] organiser was to confirm Mr
Gavin Waugh was no longer a current
volunteer at the City of Melville and this
had not been voluntary on his part,” CEO
Shayne Silcox told the Herald.
There had been no attempt to
put “restrictions on Mr Waugh’s
participation” he said.
But Dr Silcox did not elaborate on
why it took three staff to convey this
information. One of them, according to
Mr Waugh, is a senior council lawyer.

RED TENT EVENTS PRESENTS
No effect
Whatever the approach was meant to
achieve, it had no effect on the Cockburn
Wetlands Education Centre’s Denise
Crosby, with Mr Waugh’s workshop
going ahead as planned.
Until last year Mr Waugh had been a
long-time active volunteer at Melville,
helping rehabilitate its wetlands. But he
was “sacked” after publicly criticising
the council’s management of Bull Creek,
a bush forever site largely strangled by
weeds.
With the council stripping him
of his volunteer status, he signed an
undertaking not to do any weeding or
planting at the creek, which runs along
Karel Avenue before doing a dog-leg and
disappearing under Leach Highway.
He’s not even allowed to pick up
rubbish or step off walking trails without
council staff being informed first.
Mr Waugh describes Melville’s calls
to Ms Crosby as an infringement of his
civil liberties. He says it’s a statement of
fact that the council is breaching its own
management plan for Bull Creek with its
Denture

current weed control method.
While the plan recommends the
Bradley method—concentrating on
preserving the best areas of bush,
minimising disturbance and using
remaining plants as a basis for recovery,
he says the council’s contractors
instead completely clear an area with
indiscriminate spraying and then come in
later with new plantings.
Mr Waugh says many of the plantings
are dying because they were planted in
summer. Others were doomed from the
start: “You see those black caps?” he asks
the Herald as we tour the site.
““They’re swamp kangaroo paws—
they’re miles away from the flood plain
and in completely dry soil,” he says,
shaking his head. He acknowledges
there’s been some improvement in areas
managed by the contractor, but much of
the work is being undone because of a
lack of follow-up weeding.
In contrast, he points to a very large
area of former blackberry and pampas
grass he’d personally cleared, which
remains relatively free of weeds and
showing good signs of recovery.
Mr Waugh says despite the brouhaha
over the conference there has been a
slight thawing of relations between him
and Melville, with the council recently
approving his request to do some
plantings within the reserve.
Ms Crosby didn’t return the Herald’s
call before deadline.

A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO EVERY EAST FREMANTLE VOTER
Save OUR East Fremantle
Vote No to the abolition of OUR town
HOW
TO
VOTE
Please complete your vote and take it to
East Fremantle Town Hall between
8.30am and 5pm on Friday February 6 OR
on Saturday February 7 from 8am to 6pm.
If you’ve lost or thrown away your voting package sent in the mail, you
can get a new one from East Fremantle Town Hall at the above hours.
Who can vote to save East Fremantle?
Every voter in East Fremantle on the WA electoral roll. And we need a lot more votes for a very convincing result. Will you help?
We need many more votes from all over town especially Richmond Ward: Petra St, Clayton St, Stratford St, Walter St, Gill St, Windsor Rd, Osborne Rd,
Coolgardie Ave, Wolsely Rd, Salvado Ave, Parry Ave, Alexandra Rd, Staton Rd, Aldgate Pl, Alcestor St, Canning Hwy, Fraser St and Preston Point Road.
What is this East Fremantle referendum all about?
THE Barnett government wants to abolish OUR beautiful town. It wants Fremantle council to take over East Fremantle. To add insult, the premier Colin
Barnett even says we have to pay for the takeover we don’t want. No forced takeovers in any other state have saved money. They cost more and disrupt local
communities. Our rates will soar.
Why we should fight for East Fremantle
East Fremantle has always been well-managed and very independent. We have very sound finances and, unlike Fremantle, no debt. We have huge assets. We
have great council staff who have their hearts in their jobs. We have strong town-planning policies to protect our heritage and our neighbours’ amenity. We have
clean, well-maintained, safe streets and great open spaces. We have fast grafitti removal. Our roads are swept often and our trees are watered. We underwrite
great activities like Glyde-In Community Centre, the Home and Community Care (HACC) programme and all sorts of recreation, especially junior sport. And, we
have the most successful WAFL club in WA history.
Why we should reject a takeover by Fremantle Council
Fremantle is a sad shadow of its former glory. It has run itself into the ground with lack-lustre financial management and lip service to serious town planning and
heritage issues where Fremantle was once a national leader. To try to turn this around they’ve turned to high-rise development. But this only paves the way for more,
poor quality high-rise development decided by the WA government which has sidelined local councils and local people. Mayor Brad Pettitt recently said the reason the
Barnett government wanted Fremantle to take-over East Fremantle was because he and his council are “pro-development”. Do we really want this attitude ruining our
town?
And what about Fremantle’s empty shops? And the slow, lingering death of those cultural institutions Fremantle council has allowed to wither on the vine - Deck Chair,
Kulcha, The Fly, FTI.Fremantle was once a proud City of Artists, culturally creative, vibrant and unique. Now it’s a hollow cultural shell, mostly shallow bells and whistles
with expensive imported entertainment to ‘market’ the city. But the ‘marketing’ has failed. Fremantle locals have never been more unhappy with their council.
Some questions to consider in support of the NO vote!
Why has our mayor Jim O’Neill ignored our council’s decision to oppose any takeover and done his own thing? What will happen to our wonderful council staff;
takeovers always mean job cuts in the long run? What will happen to all our multi-million dollar assets paid for by us and by previous generations? Will these
be sold? Will our open spaces be sold off for high rise, high density development to pay Fremantle Council or WA government debt? With the Dockers soon
to be gone will the Sharks be forced to Fremantle Oval? Will East Fremantle Oval be rezoned and sold off for high-rise, high-density development? Will all our
sporting clubs be kicked out, forced to share Fremantle’s user-pays facilities to save money? Will Glyde-In be sold? Will the WA government’s powerful Planning
Commission - with the support of a new pro-development Fremantle Council - force massive high-rise development up on the ridge between Fraser Street and
View Terrace as it tried to do in the early 1980s? And what will happen to the Leeuwin Barracks: a concrete jungle of high-rise? Take a look northwards at the
McCabe Street, Buckland Hill high-rise? Is this our future? And finally, just how long will it be after a takeover before East Fremantle looks like just another
sad, scruffy Fremantle Council suburb?
East Fremantle and Preston Point Ovals: ripe for high-rise development?
Our way of life, our council, our staff and hundreds of millions of
dollars of our assets are at stake

UIDO MICALIZZI and wife
Linda’s extended Italian
family gaze down from a wall
of photos at their restaurant, Numero
Uno.
With his thick-rimmed glasses Guido
is easily recognisable down the years
from when his kids were little tackers
to now, and you’ll find Micalizzi senior
backdropped by cray pots on his fishing
boat.
Formerly, the family ran the very
popular Primavera Ristorante on Marine
Terrace, Fremantle, but the need for
change and high rents saw it move 10
years ago.
Guido’s passion for food is as
homegrown as the food he serves—
inspired by his Sicilian mother.
“She was so creative,” he says, adding
mama made the most of whatever was
in season, whether herring or crayfish
caught by dad or vegetables grown by
mum.
“Fresh and seasonal is when you get
the best flavours.”
Everything at Numero Uno is made
in-house, from the pasta to the cakes and
fresh produce is sourced locally.
“We go to Jarrahdale for tomatoes and
get them from the growers,” Guido says.
The minimalist decor is saved from
starkness by a wall of photos that makes
for an interesting point of discussion. And
you know it’s a little fancy when crisp
white tablecloths are involved.
It took a while to work our way
through the extensive menu.
D’Angerous Dave hovered over the
deep-fried whitebait ($23.50 entree) but
settled on King George whiting ($38.50).
Encased in a light and crisp beer batter
the sweet flesh was perfectly cooked, and
the hand-cut chips were so good he was
reluctant to share with his lovely wife.

I was keen to try the north-west baby
squid, filled with tomato, herbs and
breadcrumbs and simmered in garlic,
chilli tomato sauce, but a problem with
supply meant it was off.
So I settled for the calamari fritti.
This was no settling for second-best
and the lightly floured slices of squid
were magnificently tender and perfectly
flavoured, while the homemade mayo
was great. And the serve very generous
for an entree.
The mother-in-law had the crochette
di granchio ($18.50 entree). Looking
very decorative, the three large crab and
sweet potato cakes were fantastic, soft
and moist, and the avocado salsa was the
perfect mate for the delicate, but delicious
flavour.
The good thing about entree serves is
you have room for dessert.
What looked like a rhubarb tart was
in fact a deliciously sharp plum tart ($10)
and what I’d been eyeing off as pear
was a peach-topped cake of magnificent
flavours, all the more so for being washed
down by a really good coffee.

JENNY D’ANGER
ILTON artist Alia
Leadabrand has
empathy for those
battling depression, after her
own struggle in her twenties.
At the low end of the bipolar
spectrum she sought alternatives to
“taking the pharmaceutical” path.
“I use music, art, colour,
beautifying my surrounds,
gardening, meditation, exercise and
the ocean to combat the intensity of
severe depression.”
Leadabrand’s Lionheart
exhibition harks back to her
bohemian childhood, when as
a five-year-old she sailed for a
year on a yacht, “always to the
soundtrack of my parents’ eclectic
taste in music”.
Kate Bush’s Lionheart has stayed
with her ever since.
“Life blended so perfectly with
this album’s exotic moodiness,” she
says, noting it’s “still an ambience
I draw upon to create a healing
space to combat times when the
black dog comes calling”.
The Lionheart exhibition calls
up that time, when a passion for
everything Indian, Middle-Eastern
and South-East Asian grabbed her
imagination.
“My ambition was to create
a fictitious collection of exotic
characters from unidentifiable
lands that has the viewer both
recognise and wonder where the
character originates,” Leadabrand
says.
“I feel the colour and exoticism
I’ve captured in this collection
conveys the unique world I’ve
created to soften the rough edges
hidden in life’s darker shadows.”
The exhibition is a fundraiser
for Beyond Blue and the gloriously
colourful canvases have dropped
in price more than a quarter. All
money over the reserve goes to the
organisation.
Lionheart opens Friday February
13, 6.30pm until February 22 at the
PS Art Space on Pakenham Street,
Fremantle.

“We thought we should get on board and do a
show,” Brendan Coleman says.
Along with fellow performers Beth Sheldon
and Ross Vegas, Coleman is promising laughs and
gasps of amazement from the Bizircus Family
Cabaret. It’s a mix of acrobatics, juggling, comedy,
lassoing, human-beatbox and slapstick.
“It’s trademark Bizircus, lots of comedy, silliness
and really impressive feats,” he says.
“We’re even doing a touch of magic in this
show…in our Bizircus style.”
A collective of acrobats, artists, street performer
and musicians, Bizircus formed 20 years ago in old
Customs House on Phillimore Street in Fremantle’s
West End.
It was dedicated to creating fresh new circus
comedy shows, combined with contemporary
physical comedy: “[With] timeless acrobatic feats
and to keep audiences swinging between fits of
laughter and gasps of amazement.”
Since then Bizircus has performed around the
world at festivals and events from Paris to Hong
Kong, to rave reviews.
Bizircus Family Cabaret is on at Victoria Hall,
on High Street, today (Saturday February 7) and
Sunday February 8, 1pm. Tix at www.fringeworld.

SAD, tired little face
peered over mum’s
shoulder as we stood
in the blazing heat at the
front gate. But his big blue
eyes sparkled and a beaming
smile returned once we
stepped inside.
I knew just how the little
tacker felt as the cool and
welcoming interior of this Wood
Street, White Gum Valley home
wrapped itself around me.
The air conditioning wasn’t
on but the temperature was
pleasant and a long, lean hall
beckoned enticingly at this
elegant but easy-going home.
All four bedrooms are in the
original section, two double and
two single.
The main is a soothing and
spacious domain overlooking
a lovely front garden. And the
ensuite is a sleek and modern

I were on chuckling terms.
When I stopped gooing and
gushing, I was ready to do it all
again—only this time over this
gorgeous space.
Soaring cathedral ceilings,
jarrah floors and huge plateglass windows onto a delightful
garden are just the beginning.
The recently renovated

stainless steel appliances gleam

Baby on hip the vendor
demonstrated just how easy
it is to empty the dishwasher
straight into a huge drawer
opposite.
With reverse-cycle air
conditioning the wood heater
in the living area isn’t really
necessary: “We don’t put it
on for heating but for the
atmosphere,” the vendor smiles.
2014 was the year
when the Abbott Government
tried to destroy solar.
Overhead a glass-walled
study/office gazes down onto
the living and kitchen areas:
“What I like about it is it has
views across the gum trees,” she
says.
The trees also shade the
expansive and covered timber
deck off the living room.
A barbecue kitchen is nearby
and a huge swathe of soft,
emerald green grass leads to
the pool—where you’ll also
find an outdoor shower tucked
amongst the lush, tropical
vegetation of the garden.

The Government wanted to axe the Renewable Energy
Target but failed thanks to the efforts of some solar heroes
across industry and in Federal Parliament.
That’s why we are holding the Summer of Solar.
n the process of selling real estate the Agent
is normally acting for and on behalf of the
seller and is obliged under an industry Code
of Conduct to follow the sellers’ instructions
unless it is unlawful or unethical to do so. When
acting for the seller, the agent is also obliged
under the same Code to be “fair to all other
parties” which includes the buyer.
But what does “being fair” really mean
in the context of a property transaction? The
answer to this question has several shades
of grey but certainly, the agent is obliged to
...predetermine what
special conditions will suit
your individual needs
This fantastic news means the Federal Government RET scheme remains in
place unchanged. At least for now. Come February, the Government will be
scheming on new ways to destroy solar.
So now is the perfect time to buy.
Install solar this summer to slash your power bills and show our Prime Minister
you care about solar. By investing in rooftop solar you will be supporting lower
power bills, clean energy jobs and a renewable energy future.

disclose any “material fact” about a property
prior to a contract to buy being formed.
Material facts are loosely defined as being bits
of information that may cause a buying decision
to alter its course. This is tricky as what might
be considered unimportant to one buyer may be
of critical importance to another.
Being fair includes answering questions
honestly and providing general advice but in
my opinion does not extend to suggesting which
conditions a buyer may want to include in an
offer to purchase. It is in the seller’s interest
to receive an offer with as few conditions as
possible, therefore an agent who suggests to
a buyer they ought to include, for example,
a building inspection clause might be acting
against his or her legal obligations.
Agents approach this matter differently.
Many will suggest a series of standard
conditions that a buyer should include with
their offer and whilst, this may be outside the
agent’s mandate, it is common and an industry
accepted approach especially when dealing
with inexperienced buyers. Conversely, some
agents will simply ask the question, “Do you
wish to include any other conditions with your
offer?” and leave it at that.
Either way, buyers are advised to be well
prepared before making an offer to purchase.
You ought not assume the Agent is there
to provide guidance as to what conditions
might suit your needs. Certainly, asking the
agent pertinent questions about the property’s
age and condition and if the Seller has, for
example, undertaken any improvements during
their tenure ought to receive an honest answer.
Most importantly, predetermine what special
conditions will suit your individual needs
and ensure they are drafted in a manner that
provides the contractual protection you are
seeking.
Be especially vigilant immediately after
settlement if you want to retain some protections
in the contract should you find that not all is
as it should be at settlement. For example, a
buyer typically has only 10 business days after
settlement to properly notify the seller seeking
redress about the dishwasher they said worked
did, in fact, leak dirty water over the kitchen
floor during the rinse cycle.

February 7 - February 14, 2015
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
In being offered the opportunity to take a
position of power, you will be confronted
with having to sort out your issues with authority from
a completely different angle. It’s easy to critique how
others wield their influence. It’s interesting to see how
one behaves in the same position.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
With Venus swimming through Pisces, you
could find your imaginative talents coming
to the fore. At the very least, you will be working hard
to find ways to express the most inexpressible feelings
in your heart. The only way that comes close, is the
creative arts. Turn life into art.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Ideas are funny things. They pop into
one’s head in the most unexpected
ways and at the most unexpected times. The present
crop are offering insights into the nature of the society
around you. You can see what’s going on - and you are
inspired to find ways to address what you see.
CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)
The Moon starts the week in grounded
Virgo. Use this moment to get your
systems in order. Everyday rituals provide the bones
of your life. They are important. Make them strong.
Health and wellbeing shine in their wake. Know how
your organism works. Give it what it needs.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)
Relationships are proving to be very
important indeed. Solitude has its
limits. Those people who offer the kind of friendliness
that persists through fire and rain, are gold. Where you
are encouraged to be and trust yourself, you will feel
lightness and grace. Trust this feeling.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
The Moon begins its week in Virgo. This
charges you up with feeling. Befriend your
feelings and hold them like guests in your heart - then
you will be impassioned in all that you are and all that
you do. If your feelings overwhelm you, they will turn
into emotionality. Physicality helps.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
As you focus on your aims, so it
becomes important to throw off those
things that aren’t serving you. This is a turnaround
moment. Venus is in Pisces, encouraging you to tune
into spirit and soul. Imagination is a great tool. It is
designed to help us get back to authenticity. Use it.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
The Aquarian Sun is fixing people
on ideas that aren’t necessarily
grounded in feeling. It is your passion that sets you aside
in this climate. Be sure that you have enough awareness
happening that you don’t get fixated on your own
agenda. Transformation works best when done lightly.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Is it possible to be playful, without being
so locked into the positive that you end up
in denial? Your challenge is to figure out a way to be
optimistic and yet remain as real as real can be. Saturn
is enticing big questions to the surface. What is your
calling exactly? Are you following it?
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
The fact that Pluto is travelling through
Capricorn, makes you a central point of
attention. There’s a whole tribe of people trying to figure
out how to extract themselves from rigidity, without
discombobulating themselves and everyone around
them. This is your recurrent theme.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
The Sun is shining brightly in the middle of
the constellation of the Water-bearer. This is
a moment where, if you’re onto it, your essence can
come shining through the various veils of ego. Use this
time of celebration, as a time of remembrance. Set
your compass towards the real you.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Venus is doing her best to get you
in touch with all the delight you are
capable of. Are you listening to her? Mars is doing
his level best to get you out of any ruts you might be
in - and into some kind of invigorating adventure. Are
heeding his call? You know exactly what matters.

WIN ONE OF 5 DOUBLE PASSES
WRITTEN IT DOWN
Win 1 of 5 Double Passes to Written It Down on Thurs Feb 12
An offer from Will Ferrell’s ‘Funny or Die’ website almost got treated as
junk mail by two young Australian comics and their web-series, ‘Written
It Down’. Luckily the email was re-examined, which then saw the show
made on no budget with volunteer improvisers score a feature on the
world’s biggest comedy website. Having amassed over a hundred thousand
international views, the two creators, Matt Saraceni and Dave Zwolenski are
set to bring their completely improvised format to the Fringeworld stage at
Perth’s De Parel Spiegeltent for six shows from February 12 to 17.
No scripts. One chance. Guaranteed laughs.
Perth’s own Matt Saraceni (Lords of Luxury, Nova Radio) and Dave
Zwolenski (SBS’s A Dave in the Life) are excited to bring a brand new
game to Fringeworld. In a one-off comedic spectacular, watch Australia’s
best comedians take the ultimate challenge and perform a completely
improvised show based on the successful web-series, Written It Down.
“I’m so excited to bring a show that’s been so successful on the screen to
the stage,” says Saraceni. “The live version of this show is the best ensemble
of comedians I’ve ever seen. And, being from Perth, I’m especially proud
to show Mum that it’s totally okay I never became a lawyer!”
The all-star cast sees the biggest talents of Melbourne, Sydney and Perth’s
improvised comedy and stand-up circuits push themselves into the ultimate
uncomfortable situation. They begin a scene with no idea where it is going
to go, until they read out a never-before-seen suggestion live on stage. What
happens next is bound to be a hilarious thrill-ride for performers and
audiences alike!
Written It Down is on at Perth Fringeworld from Thursday 12 - 17
February and is a 16+ event. Tickets available from fringeworld.com.

most successful black music

many others. Dance yourself to
