WE ARE FREMANTLE
We are charming high streets, stylish
urban living, maritime culture, art,
entertainment and heritage – the epitome
of WA’s enviable lifestyle.
We are an escape from everyday life – a place to put toes in the water, learn
something new, watch the world go by over coffee or a drink, indulge in a tasty
meal and shop to your heart’s content.
We are cherished in the hearts and minds of locals, and a favourite destination
for visitors from near and far.
And today, we are on the brink of a significant evolution. With a new wave of
entrepreneurs and a strong vision for the future, we are reimagining future
Freo – and High Street Mall is at the front and centre of its renewal.
We invite you to join our journey.

OUR STORY
You need only spend a day in Freo to find yourself falling for our
rich tapestry of history and culture – from the Port to the city centre.
Originally land of the Whadjuk people, Fremantle is Perth’s second
city for economic trade and social activity. Its impressive suite of late
Victorian and early Edwardian buildings create beautiful heritage
streetscapes and our multicultural community proudly shapes who
we are today.
We have borne some of the nation’s most established and wellknown brands including Little Creatures, Morrison and Lionel
Samson & Son – the oldest continuing family business in Australia.
Internationally renowned musicians and artists have carved their
niche in Freo – such as John Butler, who started out busking in our
streets.
From commerce and culture, to period
architecture and vibrant local personalities –
Fremantle is a truly unique destination.

WHAT DRIVES US
Since 1897 we have been
Western Australia’s
shipping centre and the
largest general cargo
handler in the state.
Today, the maritime and
stevedoring industries
remain at our core.
But it was when we hosted the America’s
Cup in 1987 that Freo really came alive on
the world stage.
We expanded our economy through
investment in retail and hospitality and
nurtured these to become the driving force
of a diversified economy.
We are proud to be Perth’s most visited
tourist destination. People come to
experience our laid back vibe, word class
attractions, eclectic lifestyle and warm
climate.
In 2011, retail generated $334M.
In 2012/13, total tourism and
hospitality accounted for $593.7m.

HIGH STREET MALL
The High Street Mall is the geographic centre of our High Street – a place to stop,
and take a breath. With heritage icons such as the Round House to the west and the
Fremantle Town Hall to the east, it is the city’s true retail heart.
Where other high streets around the world struggle with traffic, our Mall was
pedestrianised in the 1960s and, today, is a place where people come first – boasting a
series of unique, intact character shop fronts fronting onto a generous public plaza.
Well connected to other city destinations such as Kings Square, the Cappuccino Strip,
West End and Victoria Quay and conveniently serviced by bus, train and close to major
car parks, High Street Mall is central to every Freo visit and is set to return to being one
of its ‘must see’ places.
High Street forms the primary east
west connection through Fremantle.
Connecting Adelaide to Market Street,
High Street Mall is the geographic
heart of our city.

REALISING OUR VISION
For us, crafting a retail destination is about engaging with people and giving them a reason
to keep coming back to High Street Mall. This also means delivering improvements that go
beyond the business mix. We will do this through:
A NEW BRAND:
We’ve developed a brand to define what the High Street Mall
stands for. The brand shapes our communications, campaign
marketing, physical environment and the selection of products
and services for our desired business mix. It will be supported by
collaborative marketing that promotes the Mall as a destination.
PLACE MANAGEMENT:
In partnership with City of Fremantle, we will attract diverse
audiences and invite people to stay longer through quality
shopfronts and streetscape presentation, programming the space
with performers, temporary installations, Christmas and Easter
attractions and school holiday activities. Long term, we have
identified ways to enrich the experience for our visitors by making
physical improvements and upgrades to the Mall including new
family friendly and interactive visitor attractions along with
improved street furniture, entry statements and wayfinding,
landscaping, lighting and more.
Redevelopment of the Atwell Arcade is the jewel in the crown
of High Street’s revitalisation and is already underway, due
for completion in late 2015. Delivering a new on-site working
population to the area through a commercial office component,
the charm and appeal of the arcade’s heritage qualities will be
retained and populated with new retailers.
PROACTIVE AND UNITED
PROPERTY OWNERS:
As the three major property owners we, and our representatives,
share this vision. We will:
•
invite existing tenants to embrace the refreshed retail
approach, with fit outs, branding, product and service offerings
•
continue to fill available spaces with motivated operators and
unique concept stores, proactively seeking the right mix
•
explore the best overall outcome for each tenancy, in the
wider Mall context
•
engage with prospective tenants to understand what you want
and how we can deliver it.
