New students will be accepted and registration forms will be available at the first class with registration costs being $12 per class, discounted 10% when 10 classes are pre-registered. Fees include a snack at the end, rating fees, instructional sheets and since some afternoon classes will be devoted to open tournaments and coaching, the class fee will also cover the usual higher tournament entry fee. Some students from the over-flowing morning beginners’ class will be switching to the new afternoon session, and keen players from the Roving ChessNuts’ school programs are also being invited to certain classes and are welcome to join. Students in school programs getting an invitation to a Saturday Knights class must first call, 780-474-2318, to book the free class as only a certain number of guests can be handled on specific Saturdays. The afternoon class is going to be the most easily accessible of the three held each Saturday, including Family Day weekend, February 14. All Chess Students need to practice at home, so if you do not have a home chess set .... Make sure you have a tournament chess set at home for practice and games ... pieces are the same as used in tournaments and set includes a vinyl board. The three round-robins sections (photos above) battled over the boards for trophies, medals and ribbons and some places had to be determined with tiebreak games. Bruce Thomas directed the tournament. February 6, 2015 update k Each Tuesday: Recreational Chess League at Table Top Cafe, 6:30 p.m. - see flyer below - attendance will have to pick up during the February playing sessions or this evening of individual and family chess may have to be dropped. Special Note: Table Top Cafe is a games cafe, 5716 75 Street next to Lumberjack Restaurant The Roving ChessNuts and the Cafe have arranged to use the cafe location for classes, recreational chess league Tuesdays, and occasional Sunday morning smaller tournaments. Entry fee into a chess class or tournament includes the cafe cover charge if you are going stay afterwards and play other games from the cafe’s giant selection. Parents not involved in the chess, are welcome to stay and purchase from the Cafe’s menu, and if they wish they can play other games if they pay the cover charge. Entry fee $15.00 r School team matches weekends of February 21 and 28: There will be some playoff-rounds at The Roving ChessNuts and possibly Table Top Cafe between various schools based on the average rating of their school chess classes. The winners of the playoffs will advance to semi-final and finals during March. It would appear that there is sufficient interest from McKernan and Meyonohk schools for them to have at least one, perhaps two teams.
