I would like to thank the students, staff and

School. I am very proud and excited to be part of
such a big and vibrant school, and look forward to
working with everyone to celebrate what we do well,

11 students, so many classes are bursting at the

Kristen Strachan is the new Head Teacher of
Special Education, and comes to us from Muswellbrook High. Clemma Mansfield is the new Head
Teacher PD/H/PE, recently from Cessnock High.
Maddie Valentine has been permanently appointed
in English, and replaces Tim Horstead who retired in
2014.
I would also like to welcome back from maternity

Welcome back to school
Many active student welfare programs operate at Singleton High School. They aim to ensure that
students are happy and safe at all times. The Head Teacher Welfare co-ordinates welfare programs
within the school and works with parents, teachers, Year Advisors, students and outside agencies.
Year Advisors:
Each student group from Year 7 through to Year 12 has two Year Advisors.
Your Year Advisor will help you by supporting you with your personal welfare, subject choices and
smooth transition through Years 7 - 12.
School Counsellors:
Singleton High School has a team of School Counsellors who are available to speak with parents and
students and will discuss matters of a personal nature, subject choice, study techniques and future
schooling.
Any matters of a private nature are kept strictly confidential.
Referral forms may be obtained from the Head Teacher Welfare or Year Advisers.
Students with Special Needs:
The school counsellors and Learning Support Team evaluate students who have special needs.
The Learning Support Team prepares special, individual programs to support these students.
Student Assistance Scheme:
Financial assistance to parents of students in Years 7 - 10 is available through the Student Assistance
Scheme. Assistance is allocated on a needs basis by application to the Head Teacher Welfare.
Help with uniforms:
Parents / guardians are encouraged to send students to school in sturdy shoes that enclose the student’s
instep. Plain black sports shoes (leather like) can be worn so that parents / guardians only need to buy a
single pair of shoes.
Students not in uniform are not permitted to go on excursions, represent the school, work for the school
(in a position such as a messenger) or be publicly presented to the school at assemblies and public
meetings. It may also be necessary for them to be excluded from practical subjects for reasons of safety.
Whilst every effort is made by students to wear their uniform, we understand that on rare occasions
students are unable to be in full uniform. When unable to wear uniform, students bring a note explaining
the reason or see the Head Teacher Welfare, who will loan a suitable item.
The School can also supply uniform items to families who may be experiencing financial hardship.

Parent Information
Aussie Bush Camp
Aussie Bush Camp for all Year 7 students will be held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of March.
Permission notes will be going home in the coming weeks with all information required.
Swimming Carnival
The school swimming carnival will be held this Thursday 5 February and all Year 7
students are required to attend as there will be no classes at school that day. There is
plenty of water fun for everyone and you don't have to swim in events if you don't want to.
If for some reason you can’t get in the water, a signed note from mum or dad is required to
be given to Singleton High School staff on the day.
Volunteers
The uniform shop and Canteen are after volunteers, so if anyone can help out for a day a
month or even just an hour, please callTracey Johnson on 0439 384 484 and let her know.
Newsletters
A reminder that the newsletters are published fortnightly and are available on the school’s
website on the Friday afternoon.
Late to school or need to leave early?
If running late in the morning please send your child with a signed note explaining lateness to the student
counter where a late slip will be issued. Nothing else needs to be done as the lateness has been
explained. If you forget to send a note, please call the school at your convenience to give reason or the
lateness will stay recorded as unexplained and will show as such on your child’s report card.
If your child needs to leave early, please send a signed note explaining why leave is needed, the date and
the time. They are required to line up at the student counter at 9am and will be issued with a pass out slip
which must be kept on them at all times until 3.30pm of that day.
Uniform
If for some reason your child has to come to school out of uniform, a signed note must be sent in and given to the roll call teacher at roll call. A suitable replacement item can be loaned to them. Black shoes must
be worn at all times.







We have Eftpos facilities at the canteen, uniform shop and front office, but no cash out facility is
available.
The main office is open from 8.30am and the students’ counter is open at 8.45am each morning.
Sickbay doesn't have panadol to administer to students who get a headache, but if your child
requires pain relief at regular times then you can leave it in sick bay with instructions and your child
can come when they require it. (good idea if they suffer regular stomach pains or migraines and may
save you a few trips to the High School office.
We have a locked bike storage enclosure if you want to ride your bike to school.
If you lose your bus pass then replacements are available ( at a cost ) direct from the bus company
only.
We have treat days at the canteen every term, keep an eye on the countdown board at the canteen
so you can bring some money...our next one will be on Friday 13th, Dominoes pizza and lollies and
did you know that we have a slushie machine at the canteen and you can get a slushie every day for
just $2.00

Aboriginal Education
Norta Norta Tutoring
Norta Norta tutoring will be available again throughout the year for our Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander students.
Assistance with Literacy and Numeracy will be offered to students who want help
with homework, studying, assessments and day to day class activities.
Students may receive tutoring within the classroom or down in the Ka-Wul Centre
from our tutors.

PDHPE and Sport News
Sports Program
Swimming Carnival
Singleton High School’s sport program for Year 8, 9
and 10 will occur on Thursdays throughout 2015,
commencing Term 1 during periods 1 and 2.
Students will have the opportunity to select from a
variety of sports listed below. Some sports have
costs associated set by the service providers and
venues. Students are to select their sport for each
term in the following way:
Non-paying sports – Students access the school
MOODLE website and choose the sport selection
section.
Paying sports – Students are to pay the money to
the front office at the student counter into the correct
account to secure a position in the paying sport of
their choice.
Please note that all sports have a limited number of
positions and some sports may also be unable to
run due to numbers. We endeavour to provide a
variety of sport choice to suit all students.

who are unable to get to the pool should meet
at EAST QUAD BY 8:45 am so they can be
escorted to the pool by a staff member

GymAbility returns to the YMCA Singleton
Heights Sports Centre next week!
For those of you who are new to GymAbility it is a
program where we have gymnastics lessons suitable
for people with a disability (both children and adults). You can
try your hand at trampoline jumps, tumbling and more in a fun,
safe and soft environment. Progress at your own pace, develop
coordination, flexibility, motor skills and confidence, and
experience the satisfaction of achieving and excelling.
Session times are:
Under 15 year old: 10:30am-11:15am
15 year old and older: 11:30am-12:15am

Rotary Exchange
Some wonderful news was received just before
Christmas break from Hanna Ferguson (Year 12
2013), who is currently on a rotary exchange in
Sweden.
Hanna was voted (out of all the girls at her high
school) as ‘Lucia’ a major community event. She
represented the school and community by being
head of the choir and leading all the other girls
in. This was a very large honour – she was the first
non Swedish person to get this honour. She had to
lead (in Swedish) 6 songs and read a poem. Well
done Hanna, and if you are interested in finding

spare a day or even a few hours please call Tracy

shop are run solely by volunteers and all profits go
