Porto Alegre
and Football:
A History of Glory and Passion
The history of football in Porto Alegre is divided into two great passions, both
centennial: Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense (Grêmio, for short), founded
September 15, 1903; and Sport Club Internacional (Inter, for short), April 4,
1909. Along over a century of rivalry and glory, both teams have brought
international titles and recognition to the city. Grêmio has been twice world
champion, two times champion of Libertadores da América, two times
champion of Brazil, four times champion of Brazil’s Cup, and champion of
South-American Recopa and other international tournaments. Internacional
has been world champion, twice champion of Copa Libertadores, champion
of South-American Cup, three times Brazilian champion - once undefeated
- champion of Brazil’s Cup as well as other international tournaments. Both,
Internacional and Grêmio have their own stadiums: Gigante da Beira-Rio - the
Riverside Giant (60,000 seats, founded 1969) - and Grêmio Arena (60,000
seats, founded 2012 as a substitute to the 1954 Olímpico Monumental
Stadium). Passion for both clubs is so great that together they have over
170,000 members. Besides Grêmio and Inter magnificent finals, Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre - HOST CITY FOR THE 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL™
has staged important football matches. The Brazilian National team has
already played 15 times in the state capital, in both stadiums, on matches
against Argentina, Germany, Paraguay, Peru, Bulgaria, Chile and Yugoslavia.
The former Inter stadium - Eucaliptus - hosted two matches of the 1950 FIFA
World Cup in Brazil - Mexico vs Yugoslavia, and Switzerland vs Mexico.
In 1972, for the Independence Cup, Porto Alegre hosted Argentina, Uruguay,
Scotland and Czechoslovakia’s, national teams. Football tradition in the City
is so big that it was a Gaúcho team, representing the Country, that won the
first title in Brazil wearing the famous yellow shirt - also known as canarinho
(little canary bird) - and the first title outside South America: the 1956 PanAmerican Championship, in Mexico.
In 2012, for the first time in Brazil, Porto Alegre hosted the ‘Match Against
Poverty’ - a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) fundraiser - a
charity project designed by former players and football world stars Ronaldo
and Zidane.
13
‘Gaúcho’ Idols
Stadiums
Not only is Porto Alegre known in the football world because of its clubs’
international titles and the matches in their stadiums, but also because of
the various idols revealed in the city and playing in FIFA World Cups such as
Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato. Nowadays, many young players revealed
by Grêmio and by Internacional shine world-wide, like Lucas, who plays for
Liverpool, Nilmar for Al Rayyan and Anderson for Manchester United.
The passion for football in Porto Alegre is such that the city will probably
be the only Brazilian state capital city to have two stadiums according to
FIFA standards by 2014. Besides modernizing the official FIFA World CupTM
stadium - The Gigante da Beira-Rio (Sport Club Internacional) - the Grêmio
Arena (Grêmio Foot- Ball Porto Alegrense) was built.
Grêmio Arena
The new home for Grêmio (the Gaúcho Tricolor) is near BR-290 and BR-448.
With a capacity for 60,000 spectators, it is a multi-purpose area, meant for
sports activities as well as other events.
Designed according to the newest concepts in sports architecture, on the
second building phase the development will have a convention center,
a shopping mall, residential buildings, and a hotel. Besides the direct
importance for sports connected to the building of the Arena the new
Grêmio stadium has a significant social vocation because it will make possible
the renovation of Humaitá - a large area of the city.

Gigante da Beira-Rio
The Gigante da Beira-Rio Stadium, home to Sport Club
Internacional, is venue to FIFA World CupTM in Porto Alegre.
Founded in 1969, the place has been through many
modernization processes. It is, undoubtedly, one of best
prepared stadiums for FIFA World CupTM, and one which offers
most comfort and safety to spectators, match officials and
stadium staff.
However, in order to fully comply with FIFA requirements
and to provide even better facilities to its more than 105,000
members, the stadium has been undergoing a number of
structural interventions.
16 - Porto Alegre - HOST CITY FOR THE 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL™
Not only the terraces are being refurbished, but also the roof
cover for all spectators, VIPs, new media and entertaining areas.
The project is even more ambitious, forecasting the urban
renovation of the stadium surroundings with the construction
of a convention center, a five-star hotel, a sports medical
center, a business center, and a tourism center - besides the
recovering of part of Lake Guaíba’s edges. After the works done,
Beira-Rio will be able to host 62 spectators.

Porto Alegre
Culture, Events and
Multiple Experiences
Formed by a mix of European cultures - especially Portuguese, Italian,
German - African, and the Guarany indigenous bias, Porto Alegre is
located in an area of extensive plains that dominate the landscape
of Southern Brazil, part of Argentina and Uruguay. That’s the Pampas
(plains) scenery, traditionally pastoral, where the Gaúcho was born
- legendary and historic figure to whom bravery and fighting spirit
qualities are attributed due to battles, revolts and wars waged along
history to defend the territory against the Spanish as well as on the
battle for the independence of the Rio-Grandense Republic from the
Brazilian Empire in the early 19th century.
Porto Alegre is a hub to preservation and irradiation of history, folklore,
habits and beliefs of the Gaúchos. And it does it in a very peculiar way
which values tradition not losing dynamism or modernity - proper of a
cosmopolitan center.
Porto Alegre is the synonym of another Brazil, one that differs from the
well known tropical destinations of sun and sand - not only because
of the scenery, but also because it makes culture its specialty. Such
difference is expressed from music to poetry, from literature to arts, from
architecture to habits and lifestyle of its people.

Walking Through the City Culture
Cultural and major events destination (as FIFA World Cup 2014 TM) Porto
Alegre is a multiple city. Therefore, not so obvious or predictable. It takes
a little while to get to know and understand the city. Thus, nothing could
be better than adopting a local habit: walking outdoors, a pleasant
choice in a city that has on its streets and avenues virtually one tree for
each of its 1.4 million people, besides 9 major parks that form a true oasis
amidst urban agitation.
The walking trail could start at the Historic Center, a renovated area,
where the city was born, 240 years ago, and which offers a tour to
important and busy cultural spaces, churches, palaces and monuments.
That’s where one can find 80% of the buildings which have been the
guardians of Rio Grande do Sul history, such as Rio Grande do Sul
Memorial, State Museum of Arts (with an attractive outdoor bistrot),
Santander Cultural (with a bar, a restaurant, a café, and a movie theater).
All of them at the historic Praça da Alfândega (Customs Square). Like an
outdoor museum, the Praça da Matriz area (Cathedral Square) is home
to the Metropolitan Cathedral and Piratini Palace (their frescoes are
worth seeing), the Solar dos Câmara (Câmara’s manor), and Theatro São
Pedro (São Pedro Theater) - ‘the apple of Gaúchos’ eyes’.
20 -
Porto Alegre - HOST CITY FOR THE 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL™
The magnificent icon of the Historic Center is the neoclassic Mercado
Público Central (Central Public Market), built in 1869 during slave period,
and which holds lots of stories and beliefs connected to the memory and
imagination of the city. Over 100,000 people walk by the 100 stalls and
stores on the two floors of this historical and cultural heritage of Porto
Alegre, where one can find typical and regional products, fruit, meat,
seasonings and international cuisine spices, yerba mate, coffee from
various places, and the freshest fish in town. African-Brazilian religious
items, crafts, wine shops and Cachaçaria with the best of domestic
production complement the variety.
The homemade ice-cream is also very traditional, the varied cuisine
offered in 26 bars, diners and restaurants - like centennial Gambrinuos
and Naval - are a must-try. On the outside, the lit bars and restaurants’
decks and garden umbrellas all along Largo Glênio Peres (Glênio Peres
Square) - another historic and cultural reference also home to charming
Bar-Restaurant Chalé da Praça XV.
21
The Outdoors
On weekends, especially on Sundays, at the traditional and popular
Parque da Redenção (Redenção Park: the most emblematic one) the city
shows its spirits. Lovers of the outdoors, thousands of porto-alegrenses
(demonym for residents of Porto Alegre) enjoy the 40-acre green area
outing, walking, jogging, meeting friends, lying in the sun, and having a
chimarrão. The genuinely native drink, prepared with yerba-mate (ervamate in Portuguese) in a calabash gourd bowl (‘cuia’), served through
a silver straw (‘bomba’), chimarrão is one of most the traditional and
unique cultural manifestations in southern Brazil.
On Sundays, Brique da Redenção, a popular outdoor craft and antiques
fair, is also stage to cultural and political activities. Notedly, in such plural
atmosphere, Porto Alegre shows there is room for all opinions and
preferences.
Urban Parks
Redenção • Moinhos de Vento • Harmonia • Marinha do Brasil • Germânia
Total: 134.82 acres of green area.
Rural Tourism near Downtown
Porto Alegre has the second biggest productive rural area among
Brazilian state capitals, just minutes away from the city center. This region
is Caminhos Rurais, a differentiated tourism product. Agroecological
smallholders produce grapes and wine, offer lodging, horseback
riding, hiking, colonial cuisine, entertainment areas, and many natural
attractions.

Speaking of lake shores in Porto Alegre, the renovation of Cais do Porto
(Shipping Pier) will turn that important area in an international standard
