If you have that special friend or loved one that you would like to make feel extra special on Valentine’s Day, then consider a floral gift from the Atlee Horticulture Department. Our students are working hard to put together beautiful and affordable floral assortments and bouquets to meet your needs this Valentine’s Day. Beginning Monday February 9, Atlee Horticulture students will be accepting orders for the 2015 Valentine’s Day Sale. Our prices are among the lowest in town for rose bouquets and vases, each containing greenery and baby’s breath. Our sale runs from now until Thursday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m. For those interested in surprising someone with a Valentine’s Day gift, we can deliver those flowers to your special student on the morning of the Friday, February 13. For anyone else who would like to pre-order flowers, we will be open until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13 for flower pick-up and open again for pick-up on the Saturday, February 14 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the AHS Greenhouse. Attention Senior Class - Tickets will be sold on Friday, February 13, during all three lunches for the Spirit of Norfolk lunch cruise in late April. To secure a ticket, please bring a check for $40 made payable to Atlee High School. The cost covers a buffet lunch and transportation to and from Norfolk. If we do not sell 100 tickets, we cannot take the trip and checks will be returned on Tuesday, February 17. If you have questions, please see Mrs. Edelman or Mr. Vuiller. 9. The UVA Summer Enrichment Program information serves students who are currently in 9th and 10th grade. It is a residential summer camp offered in 3 consecutive blocks: Session 1: June 21-July 2 Session 2: July 5-July 16 Session 3: July 19-July 30 While students attend only one session, UVA offers a quality learning experiences designed to cultivate interest and potential in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. Students thrive on the fast-paced environment of the classes and the stimulating fun offered by the residential counselors. Qualifying students should be identified as gifted or show high potential in academic fields or intellectual, creative, artistic and/or leadership capacities. The summer courses are taught by specialists in fields ranging from engineering and economics to linguistics and philosophy. During each twelve day session, students stay in dorms, in suites of 8 campers to one counselor on the campus of the University of Virginia. Club picture day will be held on Wednesday, February 18 all day in the auditorium. All students who participate in a club or group have been scheduled a time to report to the auditorium. Please leave class five minutes before the scheduled time. All students must have a club sponsor sign the Club Day Permission Sheet prior to this day. Students will not be permitted to leave class or enter the auditorium without the signed Club Day Permission Sheet. Students must have a sponsor sign for each club in which they participate. Please note that this procedure is a change from previous years. They competed against thousands of other competitors across our region. Everyone is invited to view the work at this year's regional exhibit at Capital One's West Creek Campus; more information will be sent out soon. The students who won “gold keys” will have their artwork go on to compete at the national level with a chance have it exhibited in New York City. Interim reports will be distributed to all students on Thursday, February 26. Seniors are reminded that they need to meet with their counselor at least two weeks in advance of their college application deadline. College Application Deadlines College Deadline: March 1 Submit to Counselor By: February 13 Seniors received scholarship information on Monday, February 2. If a student did not get an orange letter detailing how to apply for scholarships, they can be picked up in the school counseling office. Course verification forms that will require a parent/guardian signature will be sent home at two different times for review: 1. February 26 with interims with a due date of Friday, March 6 2. May 7 with interims, with a due date of Friday, May 15 if you are making any changes to your child’s courses for the 2015-2016 school year. If you would like to view your child’s course selections before the course verification form is sent home, you can view them under “Class Registration” in PowerSchool. As students register for classes for the 2015-2016 school year, please make sure to explore course offerings at the Hanover Specialty Center. The Specialty Center offers course work in public safety and healthcare, computer science and technology, and engineering. Transportation to and from Hanover High School is provided. As a follow-up, parents are encouraged to visit the link to The Specialty Center for additional information. This is a great opportunity to explore these unique course offerings. Students who are signing up for AP or IB courses next year are invited to participate in group counseling sessions pertaining to important academic/personal issues encountered by high school students taking AP and IB classes. The group will meet on Friday mornings during Flex from February 20 - April 24. The group will consist of a lesson and a group fitness activity. Students will need to dress appropriately for activity participation. Sessions will be led by Atlee school counselors, Randolph Macon College students and YMCA staff. If your student would like to participate, please have them complete a permission form and turn it in to the school counseling office by Friday, February 13. The group topics will be as follows: Week 1: The Importance of Exercise, Bootcamp Week 2: Nutrition and Energy, Zumba Week 3: Sleep and Stress, RIPPED Week 4: Relaxation Techniques, Yoga Week 5: Prioritizing, Bootcamp Week 6: SMART Goals, Zumba Week 7: RIPPED, What De-stresses you? Week 8: Wrap-Up, Yoga Upcoming Events There will be a meeting for students who wish to take Dual Enrollment courses next year on Friday, February 13 during Flex. There will be a CAN informational meeting on Thursday, February 19 @ 6:00 p.m. at Hanover High School. CNA applications are due by Wednesday, April 15. The Library Computer Lab will be open for seniors to complete their scholarship application from February 17-20. Students must bring their essay in order to complete the application. The computer lab hours will be 8:00 - 8:30, 11:45 - 1:30, and 3:30 - 4:00. There are some scholarship advantages to taking the PSAT as a junior, such as National Merit Scholar.
