John Robbins and Dean Lanning went with me and can correct me if I missed anything. On the “good and bad news” scene John Quarles (and Sandy) have been traveling the US in their motorhome discovering lots of new places that this country offers; that’s the good news. The Bad news is that they have found someplace he and Sandy like better than the Wilmington area, so in April (sometime) John and Sandy will be closing up shop and moving away; that’s bad news. John Robbins has stepped up to take on the Membership Enhancement Coordinator (MEC) position previously held by John Quarles; that’s good news. This leaves us with an impending opening as Chapter Treasurer; which could be bad news if we do not find a replacement by April when John and Sandy move. However, this could be good news if we find a dedicated replacement. The job isn’t really too bad as we typically make about 6-8 bank deposits and write about 4-6 checks a year (oh yeh; there is that pesky end of the year paperwork too). By the way, while I am begging, we still could use an Assistant Chapter Director. I would like to say in advance that I really appreciated the time John Quarles gave to the chapter for his participation as MEC and Chapter Treasurer. Ride Often – Ride Safe Dale Porter Assistant Chapter Director – STILL OPEN Chapter Rider Educators I thought this would be a good topic to use this month while we get ready for the riding season. Just think about what this article says. For those who ride, Motorcycle Safety means inspecting your motorcycle, wearing proper motorcycle riding gear, and riding defensively on the road. A recent study found the causes of motorcycle crashed can be attributed to: • lack of basic riding skills • failure to appreciate the inherent operating characteristics • failure to appreciate the limitations of the motorcycle • failure to use special precautions while riding • failure to use defensive driving techniques. • lack of specific braking and cornering skills • failure to follow speed limit Approximately half of all fatal single-vehicle motorcycle crashes involve alcohol. A motorcycle requires more skill and coordination to operate than a car. Riding a motorcycle while under the influence of any amount of alcohol significantly decreases an operator's ability to operate the motorcycle safely. An estimated 33 percent of motorcycle operators killed in traffic crashes are not licensed or are improperly licensed to operate a motorcycle. By not obtaining a motorcycle operator license, riders are bypassing the only method they and state licensing agencies have to ensure they have the knowledge and skill needed to safely and skilfully operate a motorcycle.
