Calculus 1501a
Summer Day 2013
DESCRIPTION:
This course is aimed at students who intend to pursue a degree in Mathematics,
Applied Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy, Statistics, or Actuarial Sciences.
Selected topics from Chapters 4,7,8,9,10 and 11 from the textbook (see below) will
be covered, including (not necessarily in that order): The Mean Value Theorem,
techniques of integration, sequences and series, differential equations, parametric
equations, and polar curves. Students should consult the list of suggested
exercises on the course website for more details.
TEXTBOOK:
STUDENT VALUE PACKAGE:
Single Variable Calculus: Early
Transcendentals, Seventh Edition, with Student Solutions Manual, by James
Stewart (Brooks/Coles). This was the same textbook that was used for Calculus
1000A/B.
Some topics will be covered in more detail than is available in the textbook. For
these topics students are expected to consult the supplementary course notes
available for free on the course website.
PREREQUISITES:
A minimum mark of at least 60% in one of Calculus 1000a/b or Calculus 1500a/b.
Note: Unless you have either the requisites for this course or written special
permission from your Dean to enroll in it, you may be removed from this course and
it will be deleted from your record. This decision may not be appealed. You will
receive no adjustment to your fees in the event that you are dropped from a course
for failing to have the necessary prerequisites.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THE STUDENT? At a minimum, students are expected to read the textbook
and supplementary course notes, and complete the exercises suggested on the
course website.
EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE:
Quiz #1: Monday, July 15, 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. (in class - SS2024)
1st Midterm Exam: Monday, July 22 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (in class - SS2024)
Quiz #2: Monday, July 29, 11:00 -11:30 a.m. (in class - SS 2024)
2nd Midterm Exam: Tuesday, August 6, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (in class - SS2024)
Quiz #3: Monday, August 12, 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. (in class - SS2024)
Final Examination: To be scheduled by the Registrar's Office. (3 hours).
EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE: (continued)
Each quiz will be worth 5% of your final mark. The two Midterms and Final Exam
will be worth, respectively, either 25% / 25% / 35% or 20% / 20% / 45%, whichever
gives the better mark.
Important Note: There will be no “make-up” tests for any of the five in-class
quizzes and midterms. If a test is missed (due, for example, to illness), the
instructor may give permission to increase the weighting of the Midterm and/or the
Final Examination (whichever is appropriate). It is up to the student to make such a
request and provide appropriate documentation to the instructor as quickly as
possible. See “Academic Accommodation Due to Illness or Other Serious
Circumstances” below.
CALCULATOR POLICY: Although the use of calculators will not be permitted during quizzes and exams,
students are expected to have a reasonable facility in the use of their calculators.

ACADEMIC ACCOMODATION DUE TO ILLNESS OR OTHER SERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES:
If you are unable to meet a course requirement due to illness or other serious
circumstances, you must provide valid medical or other supporting documentation
to the Dean's Office as soon as possible and contact your instructor immediately. It
