Text: Applied Calculus, A brief approach, by Soo. T. Tan. 9th edition. You may purchase the hard
copy or the online version. Both will give you access to the online homework.
Prerequisites: In order to enroll in this course, each student needs to do one of the following:
• Have a math SAT score of 610 or higher
• Have an ACT score of 27 or higher
• Pass Math 126 class with grade C or better
Credit will not be received for MATH 176 if credit has already been awarded for MATH 181 or higher.
Course description: Fundamental ideas of analytic geometry and calculus, plane coordinates, graphs,
functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, the fundamental theorem of calculus, rates, extrema and
applications thereof. (This course satisfies the university core mathematics requirement.)
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use and apply
the concepts and terminology of rate of change through applications and examples, compute the
derivative of a function using rules of differentiation, and compute basic integrals using the
Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
Grading Policy and Scale:
Homework = 17%. Homework was already assigned online with due dates. All homework
assignments must be completed online. You will have 3 tries for each question. You must create an
account for yourself with the access code which came with your book. Go to www.webassign.net and
follow the login instructions. Your class key is unr 1871 9404 .
If you have problems you can call the WebAssign customer service at 1-800-955-8275.
Quizzes = 10%. There will be at least 7 quizzes and the best 5 will count. No make up quizzes will be
allowed.
Tests 3 x 16% = 48%. The three tests are scheduled during the recitations on 02/27, 04/03, and 04/24.
You must bring a picture ID for all the tests and the final exam.
Final Exam (comprehensive) = 25%, Friday May 8th, 2:45 - 4:45 pm.

Resources: We will have an SI (supplemental instructor) for this course, who will be conducting
several group study sessions per week. These will provide opportunities to practice the material
presented in class and prepare for homework. Your student fees cover usage of the Math Center (775)
784-4422, Tutoring Center (775) 784-6801, and University Writing Center (775) 784-6030. These
centers support your classroom learning; it is your responsibility to take advantage of their services.
