T
his booklet has been prepared by Sonata Yacht Association of Victoria
(SYAV) from work as a member of the Yachting Victoria (YV) Trailerable
Yacht Division (TYD) Infrastructure Committee to provide a compact reference
for Sonata Association members.
Perceived Necessary Requirements of Boat Ramps and
Associated facilities:
Concrete ramp allowing two or more concurrent launch and retrievals.
•
Suitable depth of water in all tide conditions.
•
Allows “mast-up” launch and retrieval.
•
The alternative of mast-down launch and retrieval can be dangerous if
weather conditions become bad.
•
Adequate shelter from prevailing winds and sea.
•
Wharfs or floating pontoons to tie-up to after launching and before retrieval.
•
Car park for secure parking of trailers and towing vehicle.
Further options also considered of importance.
•
Availability of toilet facilities.
•
Proximity of shops.
•
Availability of fuel.
•
Members are also recommended to go to the following website for details about
many Victorian and Interstate launch ramps.
www.baum.com.au/ramps - the Boat Ramps Notepad
Google Earth also can provide close-up views and maps to all ramps.

Description & Recommendation:
This recently constructed facility is suitable as a
base for trailerable yacht cruising for top end of the
bay, or for south-of-the-bay destinations.
∗ There are two double lane ramps and one
single ramp with excellent large pontoons.
∗ Sea wall is very high, and gives very good
shelter from the sea with a claimed capacity
of 70 to 100 vessels.
∗ Some wind protection is given by the sea
wall, and overall is a tremendous upgrade on
the original facilities.
• Car & Trailer Parking: Large car/trailer park
is suitable for rigging and parking. Places for 72
vehicles. See web site to download a document
showing additional parking areas.

Description & Recommendation:
This is a relatively new facility and is suitable as a
cruising base for top-end-of-bay - particularly
Williamstown and Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers.
∗ There is one double lane ramp which has
jetties alongside.
∗ The water in the creek is not deep, and care
has to be taken at the entrance to the Yarra
River. Watch for rocks and keep to the
centre.
• Car and Trailer Parking: Very good car and
trailer parking facilities are available. Capacity is
55 car and trailers. Parking space is suitable for
rigging.
• Toilet Fcilities:
• Shops & Fuel:
• Fees: $ 14 for 24 hours. Annual fee $160
Description & Recommendation:
Excellent facilities for local racing and cruising topend-of-bay.
∗ One ramp with six lanes with pontoons
nearby.
∗ Yacht launching must be made in lanes 1 or
6 so that stern lines can be used to control
moving yacht to pontoon.
∗ Depth of water at ramp suitable for all tide
levels.
∗ Adequate number of well located pontoons.
∗ Due to large breakwater and extensive large
boat storage buildings, shelter from sea and
wind is excellent.
• Suitable for mast-up launch and retrieval.
• Car and Trailer Parking: Large car park with
parking for an estimated 50 or 60 cars and
trailers. Access is by token, which gives a

problem, as parking is required for rigging

bridge.
Launching and retrieval mast-down is
necessary.
For these reasons, we do not recommend this
ramp for trailerable yacht launching.
Car and Trailer Parking: Car and trailer
parking is available.
Fees: The cost per day for usage (inc. parking)
is $8.
Mordialloc Ramp
Description & recommendation:
∗ The ramp is a single lane ramp with adjacent
pier for use after launch and before recovery.
∗ Depth of water at the ramp is very low drying out at some low tides.
∗ The ramp is exposed to both wind and sea.
For these reasons we do not recommend
this ramp for trailerable yacht launching.
Photo below shows tide dry-out!
• Car and Trailer Parking: Parking is provided,
using a coin machine, supervised by Bayside
Council. Bayside resident Parking Permits are
assumed to be accepted..
• Access: The “hard to see” entrance is off Beach
Rd at Black Rock, located about 2.7 km south
of Sandringham yacht club.
PP 16. Mordialloc (Not Recommended)
Location: Double lane ramp on Mordialloc Creek,
with excellent floating pontoons on each side at
Governors Rd Mordialloc.
Description & Recommendation:
∗ Location is well protected from wind and sea.
∗ However, Mordialloc Creek is very shallow
(sometimes <0.5 metre) and the mud is said
to be polluted with heavy metals.
∗ To get to the bay, follow the creek. The Creek
is narrow and congested, and passes under
PP 17. Paterson River, Carrum
(Not Recommended)
Location:
Melway 97 E6
Located on Patterson River, with several adjacent
jetties.
Description & Recommendation:
Three lane ramp
∗ Access to Port Phillip is under a road and a
railway bridges,
∗ Launching and retrieval mast-down is
necessary.
∗ There is a basin on the seaward side of the
road bridge where boats can briefly anchor to
put masts up.
∗ Overall protection at the launch area from sea
and wind is very good, and quality of all
facilities is excellent.

However in adverse conditions, getting mastdown in the basin before proceeding upstream can be difficult and even hazardous.
For these reasons do not recommend this
ramp for trailerable yacht launching.
Car and Trailer Parking: Large parking area
for car and trailers.
Access: Leave Nepean Highway at Carrum
Station, then right into Station St then left into
McLeod Rd, left into Launching Way Carrum.
Patterson River Ramp
Description & Recommendation:
This double lane ramp is located on Kananook
Creek, so is sheltered from the sea and some
shelter from winds.
∗ To get out on the bay you have to negotiate
small bridge (launch and retrieve mast-down)
and there may be shallow water at low tide,
and a tendency for a bar to build up at the
entrance to Kananook Creek. Mast-up and
mast-down must be done in Bay.
∗ For all of the above reasons, we do not
recommend this ramp for trailerable yacht
launching.
• Car and Trailer Parking: good parking
available fee $7.
• Access: Enter from Davey St.
PP 18b. Frankston -Oliver's Hill

Melways 101 K5
PP 18a. Frankston Kananook Creek
(Not Recommended)
Location:
Nepean Highway Frankston- at the South end of
the shopping centre.
Melways 102 B3
Double lane ramp with short jetty at side. Large
Rocks on foreshore beach. Very unfriendly!
• This ramp is dangerous under adverse
conditions and we do not recommend this
ramp for trailerable yacht launching.
• Information from Frankston Council is that
this ramp may be de-commissioned in the
future.
• Car and Trailer Parking: Some parking
available at $7 per day
• Access: Nepean Highway near foot of Oliver's
