Principal’s Corner
Dear Harwood Families,
Often the start of a new year brings new energy as we set personal goals that
we want to work towards. The turn of the calendar year does not mark the start
of a new school year as we are nearly midway through the year, however we as educators continue the
process of monitoring the goals and commitments we made at the start of the school year. The school
improvement process is embedded in our daily operations and we continue to monitor the academic
growth of all our students and make necessary adjustments to meet their needs. If at any time you have
questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress please be sure and contact their teacher as strong
relationships are built on open and continuous communication.
Please be sure that as a parent you work to reestablish the routines of reading nightly with your child
for 20 minutes, check their back packs daily, set aside a routine time for any at home work that needs
to be completed, and ensure that your children are getting the proper rest that they need. Remember
that children learn a lot from watching what we as parents do. I encourage each and every one of you
to establish a routine of reading in your home to model literacy engagement for your kids. Please mark
your calendars now for a literacy workshop we will host on Wednesday, March 4 to support you in
helping your children at home with reading and writing. A flyer will be sent home in the middle of
February with all the important details. We hope you can join us for our math night on Tuesday,
February 10; it is a great opportunity to spend quality time engaging in math activities with your
children.
I would like to recognize the PTO Board, volunteers and all those who support the organization by
attending monthly meetings. The time and energy that is given by this dynamic group benefits the
entire Harwood community and I am grateful that we have such dedicated individuals. If you have not
had the opportunity to come to a meeting please join us on Tuesday, February 10 at 6:30 in the media
center. It has been great seeing the large turnouts at the PTO sponsored events!

Three Cheers for our Harwood Service Helpers
Our Harwood Service Squad deserves our thanks and appreciation.
They help keep the students of Harwood safe, as well as making life
for the lower elementary boys and girls more relaxed. Besides the
help they give, these students learn a sense of responsibility and a
feeling of pride in being able to contribute to their school. This helps to foster positive
habits for all students involved.
At times it may seem like a thankless job, but, we at Harwood want all the service
helpers to know  we value the work each one performs.

Children in Videos/Newspaper Articles
Occasionally your child(ren) may be videotaped/photographed throughout the school
year at various school activities. This video may be replayed on the school channel –
Channel 15 in Sterling Heights or Channel 9 in Warren. Also, pictures may be put in
local newspapers. Please indicate in writing to Mrs. Tremmel if you do not
want your child viewed on our educational channels or their picture put
in newsletters/newspapers.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
During our JUMP ROPE FOR HEART event the students at Harwood raised *$445.00 for
the American Heart Association. On behalf of the American Heart
Association and Mr. Strecansky, thank you very much for your
donation. Families and schools are critical links in providing the
foundation for cardiovascular wellness in our country. By holding this
event we raise awareness about heart-healthy living and help fund more
lifesaving scientific research and critically needed education efforts. So again THANK
YOU for being a part of this wonderful event.
News From Mrs. Rospino in the Media Center….
During January, all grades learn about Fairy Tales during Media Class.
Kindergarten & First Grades
Kindergarteners listen to variations of the fairy tale Cinderella and use the Kidpix
Software Program to draw their own versions of the princess. First Graders
listened to variations of The Gingerbread Boy including my personal favorite – The
Cajun Cornbread Boy. We focus on story elements including the main character,
setting, and we retell the story using the main events that occur in the beginning,
middle, and end of the story.
Second & Third Grades
Second Graders read and perform the Fairy Tale The Little Red Hen using the
Reader’s Theater Format. Third Graders listen to The Frog Bride and use a website
called Read, Write, Think to create a character trading card about the main
character, Prince Ivan.
Fourth & Fifth Grades
Fourth Graders create their own graphic novel (similar to a comic book) about
different fractured fairy tales. A Fractured Fairy Tale is a story that is similar to
a well-known fairy tale, but it has its own spin on the story. So the characters,
setting or events may be similar yet different from the original version. Some
examples are: Kate and the Beanstalk, Prince Cinders, and The True Story of the
Three Little Pigs. Fifth Graders selected a Fairy Tale to read and then created an
advertisement using Microsoft Word to go along with the story they chose.

…But I don’t feel so good…
Many times students are being sent to school “not feeling
good” and told if they don’t feel any better they can call home or
mom’s /dad’s work place. Students have been sick to their
stomach on the way to school, are running temperatures,
continually coughing, complaining of a sore throat, or just plain
“don’t feel good.” If your child is not feeling well, and especially, running a
temperature, please do not send him/her to school. A child should be without a fever
or throwing up for 24 hours before coming back to school.
Dress for the Season
We would like to remind parents and students that
the full force of winter is upon us. Children need to be
dressed warmly for the trip to and from school and also
for noon recess. Dressing in layers is a good idea because
the temperature can fluctuate up to 20 degrees throughout
the day. Remember
boots, hats, gloves, snow pants,
and scarves are a must when cold days are upon us.
All students are expected to go outside for noon recess, weather permitting – only a
doctor’s note explaining a condition will keep a child inside. The decision to go
outside at lunch is made at about 11:00 a.m. each day. Factors affecting this decision are
wind speed, temperature, the wind chill index and sunshine. A general guide is that the
children will be sent outside if the temperature and/or wind chill index is 15 degrees or
above

Welcome Class of 2028!
On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, Warren Consolidated Schools will host an informational parent
meeting for all families with children entering Kindergarten in September 2015. The meeting will
begin at 6:00pm in the Performing Arts Center located at 12901 Fifteen Mile Road in Sterling
Heights, attached to Sterling Heights High School.
Parents attending will be provided with information about:
 All Day and Half-Day Kindergarten options;
 Year-Round and Traditional School Calendar
 Kindergarten curriculum;
 Health requirements to attend Kindergarten;
 Breakfast and lunch options;
 Transportation; and
 Before- or after-school Latchkey services
In addition, student registration packets will be available as well as information on registration
dates and times.
Please plan on attending this important step in starting your child’s formal education in the Warren
Consolidated Schools.
