Okotoks couple has held golden cards
55-plus Alberta Winter Games: Farrers going for a euchre hat trick
By Bruce Campbell
Assistant Editor
An Okotoks couple is
hoping another gold medal
is in the cards.
Stephanie and Ken Farrer
are competing for their
third gold-medal in euchre
at the 55-plus Alberta
Winter Games Feb. 19-22
in Lethbridge. They just
missed the hat-trick at the
2013 Games.
“We got the silver at
the last Games in Calgary
because these two guys
from St. Albert beat us,” said
70-year-old Stephanie. “We
are going to Lethbridge to
win.”
The Farrers won gold in
2007 and 2011 before grabbing the silver in 2013.
However, this will be the
first Games in which the
relatively new Okotokians
will represent their community and Zone 2.
The Farrers went undefeated at the Zone 2 qualifying tournament at Sundre
in December.
“Sundre was the first time
that we won every game (at
a tournament),” the 74-yearold Ken said.
Although the Farrers are
sharp as a tack, they aren’t
playing with a full deck.
Euchre is played with 24
cards (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9) with
four cards in the middle.
The goal is to earn points
by taking tricks (or stopping
the team of getting tricks).
The game is played up to
10 points.
Of course, it means the
partners have to think as
one.
“By now we know how
each other plays and we
can read the game through
that,” Ken said.
Stephanie agreed.
“I have a pretty good idea
whatever card he leads off
where he is going or where
he needs to be,” she said.
“Just over the years, you
learn how the other plays.”
They have learned a lot by
sharing laughs — and gold
medals — playing the game.

55-Plus Alberta Winter Games: Helmut
Kokemor grew up on hills of Germany
By Remy Greer
Staff Reporter
Remy Greer/OWW
Okotokian Helmut Kokemor makes his debut at the 55-Plus Alberta Winter Games this
week at Castle Mountain as a competitor in alpine skiing.
From the rolling hills of
industrial Germany to one
of Alberta’s hidden mountain gems.
Alpine skiing is the common thread connecting
Okotoks’ Helmut Kokemor
across many vistas as he
gets set for his debut at
the 55-Plus Alberta Winter
Games this week.
“When I was a kid we
used to ski all the time,”
said Kokemor, originally
from the small town of
Breckerfeld. “I’m not from
the Alps part of Germany,
I’m from the industrial
part, but it snows and the
snow stays for a while.
“We used to just walk up
the hill and ski down, no
lift. That’s how I got a feeling for it.”
It wasn’t until he moved
to Canada until he truly
learned the sport with
stops in Vancouver and
Rossland before finding
his way to the foothills
of the Rocky Mountains
some 30 years ago.
The 63-year-old, who
still makes approximately
eight trips per season to
nearby Nakiska Mountain,
will be competing in the
55-and-over division at the
Games.
“The age group system,
55 to 65, I have to ski
against those young guys,”
he said with a laugh. “It’s

Kokemor will be racing through the gates on
Castle Mountain in a pair
of disciplines, both giant
slalom and glalom.
Giant slalom is counter to the speed events
of downhill and super-G
and instead emphasizes
the technical ability of a
skier as he or she navigates through sets of poles
at a modest distance apart
compared to the tight
turning of a pure slalom
event.
