MESSAGE FROM THE IPSSA PRESIDENT

Todd Starner is the Region 11 Director and current President of IPSSA.
I sat last Saturday in a Region 11
meeting listening to chapter reports,
region business and the Tropical Pool
Show. The attention then turned to
me with the question “what has the
BORD been up to?” As I started my
hour long presentation it occurred to
me that if my peeps in my region do
not know what is going on at the
BORD level chances are neither does anybody else. So sit back
and let me fill you in on what your BORD has been up to. When
I was sworn in as President in February, I had many ideas and
thoughts, but have since narrowed it down to a few things I felt
the BORD could accomplish this year:
1. New website and association management software
2. To work with as many other organizations as possible
3. To grow IPSSA internally
4. Leave IPSSA in a better place than I found it
At the time of this writing, we have hired an association management software consultant to work with Amy in our Executive
Office to help find a software program that will streamline IPSSA.
Our goal is to allow you to pay your dues, change an address,
upload real time rosters, register online for next year’s Leadership
Conference, etc. by the end of November.
With regard to working with other organizations, in March Terry
Snow, Jeremy Smith and myself attended in the NPDA National
Convention in Orlando, Florida. At this time I would like to congratulate Jeremy Smith for being nominated to sit on the NPDA
Board. I have had the opportunity to work with Greg with the NPC
(National Plaster Council) and am looking forward to working with
him in the future. IPSSA was also the first to donate $15,000 to
CPSA for the drought campaign. The Outreach Committee is
working hand-in-hand with CPSA on multiple issues that affect
many of you in the State of California. Our affiliation with the
NSPF still offers IPSSA members 30% off classes taken through
our website. Jason Lehman and the Education Committee are
close to having the Treasurer’s module and the President’s module completed as well as the 60 hour class for the State of Florida.
One of the BORD’s goals this year was to grow IPSSA internally,
to help with this the BORD decided at the April 26th BORD meeting to have a contest. I hope your Regional Directors have informed you. If not, starting July 1st and ending December 31st the

one simple rule: You broke it, you bought it.
“We’re a big brotherhood,” said chapter vice president Lance Rust. “We all know each other.”
Several months ago, Rust came up with the notion of a communal tool shed of sorts and so far has collected about a dozen devices
that could make members’ jobs a little easier.
Among some of the more hard-to-come-by gadgets in its inventory are a variety of computer service panels compatible with several
major pool equipment brands. The units, which retail between $500 and $600 and aren’t always stocked in supply houses, are used to
make updates to an installed system at the control pad. No need to access the control panel indoors.
“Those are a lifesaver,” said Rust, the CEO of Certified Pools serving the North Dallas/Collin County area. “Without that you’ve got to
wait for the homeowner to get home in order to get into the house.”
Though state law requires Texas pool pros to carry an electrical license, some lack the tools most electricians wouldn’t leave home
without. That’s why it was fortuitous that a Zodiac Pool Systems representative donated not only a multimeter, but a number of other
items such as manometer for checking gas volume in a heater, a kit for diagnosing robotic cleaners and several service panels.
These tools are “costly and they don’t use them every day, and when they do, they have this reserve,” said Dan Warriner, a territory
sales manager with Zodiac.
Equipment caches will likely catch on with neighboring chapters. “In fact, I know it will because I’m going to talk to them about it,” he
said.
Natural Chemistry also contributed metal test kits for analyzing nitrate and copper content in pools.
“These go above-and-beyond your commercial test kits,” Rust said.
Rust will continue serving as the self-appointed equipment librarian as long as he’s on the chapter board, then “all that will go to the
next board to keep up the tradition,” he said. “Maybe they’ll add to it.”

chapter that signs up the most new members will win $3,000,
the second place chapter will win $2,000 and the third place
chapter will win $1,000. To qualify your chapter must sign up
five (5) new or reinstated members, transfer and employee
members will not qualify. A chapter must be an approved
chapter as of July 1st. We are happy to report that we added
two new chapters at the April 26th BORD meeting, so I would
like to welcome the West Houston chapter in Region 9 and the
Lakewood Ranch chapter in Region 11 On a down note, I had
to accept the resignation of a Regional Director, Jeff Theders,
of Region 5 who stepped down in early April. I would like to
thank Jeff for his service to IPSSA and wish him the best in his
future endeavors. At this time I would like to welcome the new
Region 5 Director, Steve Donohoe. Many of you know Steve
from teaching CPO classes in southern California. I am looking
forward to working with him.
On a personal note, Region 11 is working on its first pool
show, The Tropical Pool Show, which makes its debut September 19 – 20 in Ft. Lauderdale at the Embassy Suites. I
would like to thank all of you in the IPSSA family that have
helped and my dedicated Pool Show Committee.
For my fourth goal, leaving IPSSA in a better place than I
found it, I’m still working on it...
SUPPORTING OUR VETERANS
Debbie Rust a member of the Texas Bluebonnet Chapter of the DAR and a proud
member of the Fort Worth Chapter of IPSSA
is making one more of the six deliveries this
year for the veterans. IPSSA Fort Worth
chapter approved a sizable donation to the
VA.
Along with clothing, toiletry items and other
essentials she also had one of Certified
Pools customers donate what was essentially a small Library for
the veterans. This is one of the proudest moments of Debbie and
her husband and the Fort Worth Chapter of IPSSA to be able to
give
back to
the
ones
that
truly
deserve
it.

Jason Lehmann on his unopposed run for his 2nd term as
Region 12 Director!! I know he
will continue to do a terrific
job. The region is finding its
way and with strong leadership, we will succeed. The
chapters all gave their reports
and it looks like we are all
doing well. The sea turtle project is ongoing and there will be another run for South
Padre in early November. As the dates and schedules
get finalized we will update everyone with all of the info.
It’s a great feel good project that is generating a lot of
interest in IPSSA as a whole.
I also want to remind everyone that I have the Ranger
game tickets for September 25th, 7pm for $37.50. So
come on out and lets have some fun. I know it’s been a
hectic year so far and it would be fun to grab a hotdog
and watch a game. See you there!

History
IPSSA was formed in 1988 as a result of a merger between IPSA and Cal-IPSA. Those two
organizations were a part of the original association founded in 1961 for the purpose of pool
service technicians banding together to help each other in times of illness or disability.
Mission
The Independent Pool and Spa Service Association, Inc. exists for the mutual professional benefit
and growth of its members and for the continued improvement of the pool and spa industry.
Code of Ethics
As a member of the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association, Inc., will utilize my professional knowledge and skilled practical workmanship in providing quality
customer service. To that end, it will be my responsibility to keep informed of developments in the pool and spa industry, including new techniques and product applications. My second obligation will be to IPSSA members by giving them any professional assistance they need, including sick route coverage. In this endeavor, I shall
respect their clientele and not encroach upon their routes. My final responsibility will be to my community and its citizens. I will strive to communicate the necessity for
pool safety and other issues of importance to pool and spa owners. In these ways, I will promote the ideals and objectives of the Independent Pool and Spa Service
Association, Inc.

The traffic to our ipssa Texas website
has increased a lot, I think it could be
several things that we are doing. For
instance the truck magnets that have our
website address on it, also the huge banner that hangs at Sea Turtle Inc. in South
Padre. We have almost doubled the likes
on our ipssatexas facebook page and we
are connected to manufacturers, pool
builders and of course pool service companies and Sea Turtle Inc’s facebook
page with over 30,000 followers.
IPSSA Inc. is also in the process of revamping the national website, and I believe you will be able to be listed by zip
code. We will have to wait and see, all
good things take time,
as we all know.

Routine service call leads to discovery
of dangerous pool heater

Sometimes recognition is due. John Huber, an
IPSSA member and owner of Sparkling Pools in Brentwood,
California went to a residence for what he thought was a
routine pump repair today. As he approached the equipment pad he saw a old wood shed housing the pool equipment. Inside was a very old heater with no external vent
stack. It presented not only a fire hazard, but a serious risk
carbon monoxide poisoning to any service tech working
inside the shed, as well as to children playing inside the
structure.
Kudos to John, who promptly shut the gas valve
and disconnected the heater’s electrical connections, making he heater unusable. John will explain the safety hazard
to the pool owner, but in the meantime the risk of a serious
tragedy has been removed. Safe pools are good business
and we congratulate John Huber for making this pool safer.

A pool tech has been asked to clean and re-fill an empty
fiberglass pool. The pool has been empty for a few years
and has three feet of dirt in the bottom. The walls are
slightly bulging and because of the accumulated dirt, it’s
unknown whether the bottom is bulging too. The house is
being sold and the buyer won’t complete the sale until the
pool is cleaned and filled.
My opinion: This is a risky job. The shell may be cracked
or the pool tech may damage it as he worked in the empty
pool to remove the dirt from the bottom. In either case, he
will likely be blamed for the damage to the shell since he is
aware that it is bulging and the risks involved. The buyers
could rescind their offer to buy the house
based on the shell damage, exposing the
pool tech to even further liability. I would
walk away from this job, fast.

willing to pay $500.
