SMEC Supplies Safe Drinking Water in Pakistan

SMEC and Engineering General Consultants (EGC), a SMEC subsidiary, have been engaged (as part
of a consortium) to provide engineering management services to the Government of Punjab on the
Saaf Pani Clean Water Project in Pakistan.
This project forms part of a government initiative to supply sustainable drinking water to residents
in rural and peri-urban areas of Punjab, currently with access to only contaminated or brackish
water sources.
The objectives of the project are: to guarantee the availability of safe drinking water; ensure a
water source is no further than 1 km from its place of use; and provide a minimum of four litres of
safe drinking water per person, per day.
The consultancy will be carried out in the districts of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Lodhran and
Rahim Yar Khan. Services will include: mapping of priority districts; feasibility studies; Geographic
Information System (GIS) inventory; engineering design and procurement; environmental impact
assessments; development of district master plans; and construction supervision.
