Team wins award for recruiting patients into research projects
A consultant and his team from Blackpool Victoria Hospital have won an
award from a national clinical research organisation.
Dr Peter Isaacs and his colleagues have been praised for their commitment to
research at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust‟s
Gastroenterology Department.
The award from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) names Dr
Isaacs as a „Leading Commercial Principal Investigator‟.
Recent research studies in the Gastroenterology Department have trialled
drugs for patients with cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol abuse.
Dr Isaacs, who lives in Lytham, is passionate about promoting research in
clinical settings.
He said: “The award from the NIHR was a team effort. They looked at
researchers from across the country and decided who was most successful at
recruiting patients into studies.
“The hospital has a proud record of research into most of the major
specialisms such as Cardiology, Oncology and Haematology.
“The hospital also has a reputation with clinical research organisations for
delivering on time and on target.
“The Trust itself is fully behind research. Encouraging rapid responses from all
of the hospital‟s departments has been the key to our success.”
Greta Van Duyvenvoorde, a Gastroenterology Research Nurse who works
with Dr Isaacs, said: “We are building up a portfolio of research trials in the
Gastroenterology Department.
“We have just finished two projects on chronic liver disease. We have also
recruited the first patient in the world for a project looking at alcohol and liver
disease. Such recruits are known as „global patients‟.
“What we are aiming for is that all patients coming to Blackpool Victoria
Hospital will expect to be involved in research. Patients are now asking to be
involved. The important thing is that patients are given the time to talk about it
with a research nurse.”
Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer from the Department of Health,
presented the award to Dr Isaacs at a ceremony in London on Monday,
February 9.
Michelle Stephens, Research and Development Manager, said: “As a
research active Trust we endeavour to offer as many patients as possible the
opportunity to join the clinical trials here.
“It is rewarding to see our Investigators and research nurses receive national
recognition for the work they do to bring new treatments to our patients and
the NHS.”
Dr Isaacs is currently leading the Trust‟s „Be Clear on Cancer‟ campaign. The
campaign is focusing on cancers of the oesophagus (or gullet) and is running
until February 22.
