Funded Masters in Clinical Research
Clinical Academic Training
The University of Brighton are now recruiting for NIHR fully funded (SUBJECT TO FUNDING BY NIHR, TO BE
CONFIRMED SPRING 2015) places for the MRes (Clinical Research) course, starting in September 2015. Funding
includes salary costs and course fees for full time over one year or part time over two years. Please note there

Competition for these places is open to all those who are able to fulfil the entry requirements. Candidates will
demonstrate their potential capability to successfully complete the research project and must demonstrate a
commitment to a clinical research career. The research question will explicitly link with the research objectives
of the organisation in which the candidate works. In addition, the Trust or employing organisation will
demonstrate a commitment to the support of the candidate throughout their studies.
Typical entry requirements
Applicants should normally have:
 a first or upper second class honours Bachelor degree in their area of professional practice or a relevant
qualification at Master’s level;
 have at least one year of clinical practice experience (or part time equivalent)
 be working in a NHS Trust or practice setting in England that receives its funding, in whole or part, from
the Department of Health/NHS;
 be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) / Nursing and Midwifery Council
(NMC) / General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and have a licence to practise in the UK;
 For candidates whose first language is not English (if not completed a UK degree within 3 years) the
minimum standard of English competence accepted is equivalent to an International English Language
Testing System (IELTS) Score of 7 overall and 6.5 in writing or a Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOFEL) Score of 250 for the Computerised Test or 600 for the paper test.
Course structure
The programme consists of:
 Research Methods for Health Professions
 Taking Research Forward in Health and Social Care
 Research Ethics and Governance in the NHS and Social Care Sector
 One of the following research focused modules:
o Qualitative Research
o Essential Statistics for Medical and Health Research
o Epidemiology
o Analysis of Function
o Principles of Research
 One optional module from the Graduate Programme in Health and Social Sciences to meet the needs
of individual students.
 Clinical Research Dissertation that involves carrying out a research project directly related to the
student’s usual clinical practice. The student is supported by a research supervisor.

We are running a free MRes (Clinical Research)Applicant Preparation Day on Thursday 5th March 2015 from
10.30am to 4pm. You must register with Jayne Ingles [email protected] by Thursday 19th February 2015 to
secure a place which will be on a first come first serve basis.
