MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
We are currently in week 4 and by the time we know it,
it will be the end of Term 1. Hopefully your children
have settled well into school life. There are a number of
important things that you need to take note of.
Updating Information
Please ensure your information is kept up to date on
our school records, so if you have changed address or
phone number please inform the office as soon as possible. This includes emergency contact numbers.
If your child has a medical condition such as asthma or
allergies, please inform the office and provide the office
with any medical documents that are necessary in case
of an emergency.
Absences, Notes & Punctuality
Ensure your child is not absent from school for trivial
reasons. If your child is sick or unable to attend school,
please make sure that you contact the office and provide a reason. If you are unable to contact the school,
then you must write a note and advise the school as to
the reason why your child was absent. School attendance is of utmost importance.
Also, please keep in mind that students need to be at
school no later that 8:40 am. The first bell rings at this
time and student attendance is taken. If a student is
late a record of their lateness is kept.
Students miss out on vital work in the early parts of the
day.
It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that their child
arrives to school on time.

PRINCIPAL
SCHOOLNURSING PROGRAM - SCHOOL NURSE VISIT
Annwen Doonan, your visiting primary school nurse from
the Department of Education and Training, will be attending the school during Term 1 to conduct the Prep grade
health assessments. Annwen is also able to see other children as requested by parents or teachers (with parents’
consent).
The purpose of the visit is to provide all Victorian children
with the opportunity to have a health assessment; to link
children, families and the school to services available in the
community; and to provide information and advice that
promotes health and wellbeing.
Parents of students (other than Prep students) who wish
their child to be seen by the school nurse need to complete a Referral form that is available at the school office.
This completed Referral form needs to be returned to the
school office.

their parents during next week.
These meetings will be held in the Library on the
following dates;
Year 7
Monday 23rd of February, 2015 from 6.30 to
7.30 pm
Year 8-9
Tuesday 24th of February, 2015 from 6:30 to

VCE (Year 11 & 12)
Thursday 26th of February, 2015 from 6:30 to
7:30pm
The purpose of these information sessions is to
outline the structure of the relevant year level
programs offered at Mt. Hira College and to explain upcoming events, transition programs, uniform, presentation, assessment, student expectations and extra-curricular opportunities for
2015. This includes an overview of the relevant
year level handbooks which includes information
about subject outlines, student examination
preparation, key dates, scholarships and student
organisational skills.
It is essential that parents and students attend
the relevant Information Evening in order to ensure that they are able to make informed decisions regarding all opportunities provided to
them by Mt Hira College. All students are expected to attend. Students who do not make a
satisfactory effort to attend the event may be
excluded from participating in extra-curricular
activities afforded to them by the College. All
Form Teachers for the relevant year levels will be
in attendance at the evening.
Please ensure that you have completed the form
that your child will have received from the college which includes further information about
the information evenings.
Completed forms should have been returned to
Mr. Stock (Year 7-9) or Mr. Campbell (Year 10-12)
by Tuesday the 17th of February, 2015.
Secondary Interschool Sports Participation
MT. HIRA V.
The secondary interschool sports program commences
next week when our VCE students participate in the
sports of Volleyball and Tennis. Over the first 3 terms of
the year our students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of interschool sports.
There are a couple of important things to consider with
this though; with the significant increase in student
numbers the school now has many more students
from which to select our teams. This unfortunately
means that some students will not be selected when
sporting events are taking place because there are
often limits on the amount of players that most teams
can have. School staff members will look at who most
deserves to be selected, ability, attendance, behaviour
and general attitude when selecting participants.
A major consideration for selecting players will be
school attendance. If a student has an attendance rate
of below 80% then they will not be considered for Interschool Sports participation. In the event that a student is absent then please contact the school to keep
us informed. Further to that if they attend the doctors
and get a medical certificate then this will help to cover
their absences and be taken into consideration when
selecting sports teams.
Students attending interschool sport competition will
need to be dressed appropriately in the full school
physical education uniform.
Well done and best of luck to all students who get selected to represent Mt Hira College in any interschool
sports event over the course of 2015.

SCORES WERE :
MT. HIRA = 61 / WALLARANO = 212
I really think that the cricket team did well today,
even though we lost. The final scores were Mt. Hira
61 and Wallarano 212. Our most valuable player was
ABDULLAH BLOCH in year 5 because he scored the
most runs. I think the team did a great job while
balling. Next time, we will try our best to win.

Starting 2015 Positively
Starting 2015 Positively
The majority of Mt Hira College secondary school students have commenced the year in a very positive fashion. Whether it be uniform, attendance, academic
effort or performance most students have met or gone
above the schools expectations, which is fantastic! We
sincerely hope that students will work hard to continue
to maintain these efforts.

The majority of Mt Hira College secondary school students
have commenced the year in a very positive fashion. Whether it be uniform, attendance, academic effort or performance
most students have met or in some cases gone above the
schools expectations, which is fantastic! We sincerely hope
that students will work hard to continue to maintain these
efforts. As a school our expectations of our students are high
and we are working hard to help students achieve their potential. In order for students to give themselves the best opportunity to be successful it is very important that they follow basic school policy and focus on attending school as
often as is possible as well as consistently attending all classes on time with the correct materials.
Well done to all secondary students on a good start to the
year and keep up the good work.

PRIMARY NEWS
It has been a very hectic start to the year with swimming, sports and academic requirements. The grade 5s
and 6s have been very active creating a product and
making an advertisement for this. They have been very
enthusiastic and engaged in this project which is fantastic to see.
Swimming
Grades 2s to Grade 6s have been involved in the swimming program at North Lodge Swimming Academy.
Tomorrow is the last day for swimming and I heard that
the students have made great developments in swimming and confidence in water. I would personally like
to thank all parents who have assisted during this program. The Grade Preps and Grade 1s will begin their
program on Tuesday 17th March.
and how you can help your children strive in their education. Next week we have the Grade Prep, Grade 1,
Grade 2 and Grade 3 information afternoons and I invite
and encourage all parents to attend these important sessions.
Head bands and Hair Ties
Many girls have been wearing head bands with flowers
and other attachments to them. All headbands must
have nothing on them. They need to be a plain headband in navy, white or burgundy. Hair ties also need to
be in navy, burgundy or white. If students’ hair is longer than their shoulders they must have all of their hair
tied back.
Preps
The preps have started full days this week having the
Wednesday off. The same goes for next week and then
they will be full time starting on Monday 2nd March.
The preps have settled in well and seem to enjoy school
life and routines.
House Captains and SRC Representatives
On Monday morning at the Primary Assembly the students were presented with their badges for House Captains and SRC by the Principal Ms Sareh Salarzadeh.
The following students were awarded with badges;
Blue House - Irham Muhamed-Kadir and Alissa Mohamed-Mokhtar
Yellow House - Ilayda Yan and Sami Abouzolf
Green House - Aidid Yassin and Dilara Zeybek
Red House - Emre Ozyurek and Beyza Sadoglu
The SRC students are;

Interschool Sports
The Grade 5 and 6 students really enjoyed their first
interschool sports day last Thursday and participated
with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. I wish the
students good luck this week as they compete against
Keysborough Park Primary School.
Tea with the Teachers
This week we have had the Grade 4, Grade 5 and Grade
6 information afternoons. These sessions allow you to
meet the teachers and discover their expectations and
what skills and knowledge the teachers are developing

Library Rules
All bags are to be put in the bag bay.
There is no running, eating or drinking in the library.
Noise is to be kept to a minimum.
Return books to their proper places.
The library environment needs to be respected so all staff and students can enjoy it.
The library needs to be tidy when you leave.
Issuing (borrowing) books
Books are issued during library lessons, before school, lunchtimes (for secondary students only)
and after school.
To get a book issued :
1. Give the librarian your name and class you are in.
2. The librarian will issue your book for one week for primary and two weeks for secondary.
Primary students are allowed to borrow two books and secondary can have three books at a time.
(If you have an overdue book, this must be returned or renewed before you can get another book
out. The librarian will hold the book on reserve for you.)
Returns
Always return your book into the return box in the library.
Renewals
If you have not finished the book, bring it back and the librarian will reissue it for you.
Over dues
Once a week an overdue list is sent to your teacher. If your name is on the list you must return
your book or see the Librarian to get the book renewed.
Once a month if the student has an outstanding overdue library book a late fee will be charged
and there will be no borrowing until the book is returned.
Books not for loan
Some of our books cannot be borrowed because they are too popular to leave the library or maybe they are too valuable. Read these books in the library.
What do I do if . . .
*I damage or lose a book?
Come and see the librarian straight away. Bring the book with you if it is damaged so we can see
if it can be repaired. If it is too badly damaged or if you can’t find it we will ask you to replace it or
pay for the book. If you deal with the problem straight away, you’ll be able to use the library sooner.
*My name is on the overdue list and you are sure that you returned the book?
See the librarian straight away. It may be that you returned the book after the list was printed or
the book has got back on the shelves without being marked off. Whatever the reason we can deal
with it best if we know straight away.
*My friend asks you to get a book out for them?
SAY NO. If you take a book out in your name you are responsible for it and if the book is
overdue or mislaid, YOU will be asked to locate it or pay for it.
*My friend wants to read the book you have out?
Take the book back to the librarian with your friend so she can have it issued in their name.
