A prayer for Lent
Lord, as we enter Lent help us to draw near to you in praise, stripping away all that distracts us from
worship. As Jesus resisted temptation by the devil in the wilderness, help us reflect on his faithfulness
to God, his rejection of worldly values and hold these thoughts in our hearts throughout Lent and
beyond. Amen

On Monday we welcomed new students Ella Stacey, Bradley Miller, Chyna Webster and Shannon
Farrall to Saint John Houghton. We hope they will be very happy here with us.
New artwork in Reception
Next time you visit us please take time to check our lovely new
art work in reception. The work was completed by Lucy Savory
from Eaton Stationery who took key words from our school
prayer and mission statement as inspiration for the work. I do
hope you like it as much as I do.
Thirty years of service to Saint John Houghton
There has been much reference to a certain TV
programme being thirty years old this week but
that pales into insignificance when we think of
Mrs Pat Limb our midday supervisor. On
Thursday Pat celebrated thirty years of service to Saint John Houghton which is a wonderful
achievement. Students presented Pat with some flower and cards to mark the occasion.
Congratulations to Pat and here’s to the next thirty years.

We will be seeking nominations for Parent Governor to join the Saint John Houghton Catholic
Voluntary Academy Local Governing Body - letters will go to all parents very soon with full

Our Lenten Journey begins.
On Wednesday we held our Ash Wednesday services
in school to mark the beginning of Lent. Miss Bailey
led the liturgy and encouraged us to consider how
we should live Lent with focus on prayer, fasting and
charity. Our choir led by Mr Quenby sang the
beautiful hymn “Take, O take me as I am” as the
ashes were distributed by Miss Bailey, Mrs
Brambell, Rachel, our Headboy Luke and Headgirl
Merrin.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2015
Fairtrade Fortnight is coming - 23 February - 8 March 2015!
Please help us at Saint John Houghton Catholic voluntary academy to support Fairtrade Fortnight
2015.
Over the past 20 years, the Fairtrade mark has become the biggest and best known ethical label in
the UK.
78% of the UK public recognise the FAIRTRADE Mark.
From UK sales alone, £26m of Fairtrade Premium was invested by producers in 2013.
But we know there is still a long way to go to make all trade fair – just 1.2% of cocoa and less than
10% of tea globally is traded on Fairtrade terms.
So for Fairtrade Fortnight 2015, we are going to celebrate the impact of Fairtrade and ask you to
turn a spotlight on the producers who grow the products we love.
Members of the Fairtrade group in school will delivering an Act of Worship on Friday 27th February,
to hi-light the 2015 campaign about core commodities – cocoa, sugar, and tea. As a school our focus
is going to be on tea.
Whether you’re an individual or part of family, please help us take action by drinking a Fairtrade
cuppa this fortnight – may be it could be your Lenten gift this year?

Rachel would like to thank Year Seven for the wonderful
welcome on Monday lunchtime to their Common Room.
Rachel would like to thank Miss Bailey for leading the
school in the Ash Wednesday liturgy. It was a wonderful
opportunity to gather to mark the beginning Christian
season of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation, an
opportunity to start again and a moment for us to stop
and reflect on our relationship with God, with each other
and with the world around us. Miss Bailey was
supported by Mrs Forrest, our Head Boy, Luke Moore
and our Head Girl, Merrin Shelton, Mr Long read and Mr
Quenby supported with the school choir sang. It was a
very special and spiritual morning.
How lovely to see Cannon John Berry in school and we would all like to wish him a Happy Birthday!
Rachel would like to thank Miss Jenkinson and Mr Parr for their support with the Chaplaincy
Department this week.

Saint John Houghton vs Kings (Chester) Match Report 2-3 AET – 05/02/15
The team arrived at the New Manor Ground with plenty of time in hand before the big kick off. It
was the day of the National Cup Quarter Final and their opponents, Kings School, were travelling
down from Chester.
It was a chilly afternoon but the pitch was in mint condition thanks to the ground staff at Ilkeston
Town F.C. After a thorough warm-up, Mr Hope got the game underway and Saint John Houghton
kicked off at 3pm, just as 60 of their classmates arrived to come and cheer them on. The boys were
playing in front of an attendance of approximately 100 as parents and grandparents also came down
to watch.
The boys settled in to the game really quickly. The striking partnership of Louis Thompson and Louis
Hart was working well and 10 minutes into the half, after a fine one-touch passing move, the ball
found its way out to Tom King on the right hand side of the pitch, he crossed the ball to Louis
Thompson whose shot was smothered by the goalkeeper.
The boys continued to play well for the remainder of the half, with the midfield four of: Tom King,
Bradley Lathall, Donagh Devine and Finley Hayes linking up well throughout.
The game was an even affair. The back four which included: Ryan Smith, Cian Sheridan, Benedict
Marchewka and William Murphy along with Angus James in goal (who made some great stops in
the first half), ensured the sides went in level at the interval.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first, with Kings enjoying slightly more possession
and started to become comfortable on the ball. Declan Lambert and John Wroe came on as
substitutes. However, a quick counter attack down the left found John Wroe in the box, he beat his
man and was fouled in the process. A penalty was awarded. Finley stepped up confidently and coolly
dispatched the penalty to the keepers right. Saint John 1 – 0 Kings.
Unfortunately, the boys lost their concentration soon after. The Kings striker did extremely well to
beat a man before rounding the goalkeeper and neatly slotting away to place the ball in to the
empty net. Saint John 1 – 1 Kings.
1-1 quickly turned to 2-1 when the Kings striker again managed to evade the defence after receiving
a delightful through pass and stroked the ball home in the bottom right-hand corner. Saint John 1 –
2 Kings.
However, the boys did not let their heads drop and were determined to take the game to extra time.
Late on in the game, a free-kick swung in dangerously from the right hand side by Tom King
eventually found its way to Donagh Devine, who beautifully curled the ball in to the top left corner
of the goal, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. The crowd went crazy and the boys celebrated on the
pitch! Saint John 2 – 2 Kings.
A few moments of panic towards the end of the second half nearly led to Kings cruelly snatching the
game, but the boys managed to cling on and take the game to extra time, where they would need all
their effort to reach the Semi-Final of the National Cup.
Quickly after the restart, Kings were again enjoying a good spell of possession camped inside the
Saint John half, when a shot from the edge of the box was cruelly deflected passed the helpless
Angus in goal and found its way into the back of the net. Saint John 2 – 3 Kings.
In a desperate attempt to get an equalising goal to take the game to penalties, Mr Ritchie decided to
throw more people up front. The boys kept plugging away right until the final whistle and created
some good opportunities late on, but it just wasn’t to be their day.
Nevertheless, it was a valiant and brave effort from the boys and they should be proud of what they
have achieved, as reaching the last 8 of a competition that began with 150 teams is a magnificent
achievement!

Ski Trip 2015
On Friday 6 February, 38 staff, students and adult set off to Passo Tonale in Italy for the 2015 Ski
Trip.
After a 24 hour coach journey, including a first time trip on the Eurotunnel, we arrived at resort. First
up was ski fit and collecting of skis. Everyone then had an early night to get ready for the first days
ski.
Our
instructors
were
Stefano,
Thomas
and
Mauro and they led us
through a fun packed,
accident free week of blues,
reds and black piste skiing.
In the evening, we took
part in bum boarding, ice
skating, quizzes and a very
successful if noisy karaoke
evening.
The last full day saw the
group try timed slalom runs
which
proved
very
competitive.
The skiers of the week were
Megan Keily, Isaac Reading
and Niall Cunningham. The
skier who was awarded the progress of the week award was Finn Broderick.
Well done to all the students for making it such a fantastic week of skiing!

Attendance and Punctuality at Saint John Houghton
Attendance and Punctuality League Tables - February 2015
Scoring System
Any pupil who had 100% attendance in any term gains 10 points for their tutor group, any pupil with
at least 96% attendance gains 5 points. Any pupil late for school or late to lessons means a -1 point
for their tutor group.
The 2nd set of attendance and punctuality league tables see the emergence of a new school leader,
7PL. They are closely followed by another year 7 tutor group, 7AR. Well done to both these groups.
11JB remain in the lead in year 11, 10EM take over top spot in year 10, 9KN remain in top spot in
year 9 and 8RL retain the lead position in year 8.
Good attendance and punctuality are important for many reasons at school and published in this
letter are the names of pupils who had 100% attendance in term 2. Well done to all these pupils.
We are a little concerned with punctuality in the mornings, school begins at 8.40am and it is
important all students are in school for that time. Job references that arrive in school always seek
details on punctuality records. Please do your best to ensure your child arrives on time for school.

Summer 2015 GCSE Examinations - May 11th - 24th June 2015
Individual timetables for the above series of examinations are now being distributed. It is important
that they are checked to ensure that students have been entered for the correct exams and tiers if
applicable. Any issues please see subject tutor and Mrs Morris (exams officer) as soon as possible. It
is also important that all the personal information that is on the timetable is correct e.g. correct
name/spelling, date of birth etc. As these details will appear on all examination certificates. If any of
this information is incorrect, then it is vital that we get the correct information recorded before the
certificates are produced. Failure to do this could prove costly to the student as the current fee for
duplicate certificates levied by the awarding bodies is £37.00 per certificate.
Year 10 Mock exams
Year 10 mock GCSE examinations are due to take place w/c's commencing 9 and 16 March 2015,
timetables will be issued shortly along with a small information pack.
Year 9 Football
Mr Long would like to announce that Year 9 Football training has recommenced. Training will be on
Tuesdays 3:30 - 4:20. New players are welcome.
10KB Tutor Group Pledge
Well done to 10KB for completing their tutor group pledge by selling cookies for St Valentine's
Day. It was a real team effort which managed to raise £63.00 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Mrs
Boddice and Mrs Waring are very proud and the cookies were delicious!

Mrs Brambell would like to congratulate the following students in year 11 for exceptional results in
the RE Mock: Isaac Reading, Christopher Brown, Liam Martin, Daniela Loffreda, Simon Rotherham,
Tiffany Smith, Lucy Stanton-Lynch, Rachel Tooley and Ben Widdowson. Well done! In Year 10,
Laura Sellers and Tara Hall achieved 100% in an end of unit test and Shyla Soszynski exceeded her
GCSE target grade in her most recent homework booklet. Well done! In Year 8, Orla Gorman and
Joseph Boyle produced beautiful artwork on the topic: Jesus - mad, bad or God which is on display in
reception. Well done! RE praise postcards have been sent home in recognition of all the students'
achievements in RE.
Business and Computing
Year 10 have been busy using market research techniques to investigate new business opportunities
this week. On the whole they have decided there is a gap in the market for Pet Grooming businesses
in their local area! Mrs Boddice is really pleased with the effort and initiative applied to this
work. Well done to the following 'budding entrepreneurs':

It has been a great week at Saint John Houghton. I was very impressed by the Ash Wednesday
services this week and the respect shown by our students. Many of our students were keen to
congratulate Mrs Pat Limb this week on her thirty years of service as they are very grateful for all
her support. Mr Warden and Mrs Joslin told me that the students who went on the ski trip were a
credit to the school and their families. All this does not happen by chance but thanks to the love and
support from parents, staff and students working to support and encourage each other. I pray that
during this season of Lent we will reflect on all that is good in our community and work even harder
to strive to be the best that we can be.
