Shkolnik, Dmitry, 1960-. Icon of Abraham, Sarah, and Moses Welcome to the Anglican Parish of St Andrew and St Mark MISSION STATEMENT The Anglican parish of St Andrew and St Mark, Dorval is a welcoming and inclusive community centred in Christ. We aim to be thoughtful stewards of God’s creation through beautiful worship and the sharing of God’s love and compassion in our neighbourhood and beyond. March 1, 2015 The Second Sunday in Lent Please enjoy silence prior to our service. “In the peacefulness of silence may we hear your still, small, voice calling to us, O God, reminding us that your mercy is everlasting, your forgiveness is unending and your love is ever before us.” March 1, 2015 The Second Sunday in Lent The Gathering of the Community Prelude Von Gott will ich nicht lassen Dietrich Buxtehude I shall not abandon God. For he does not abandon me, he leads me on the right way, where I would otherwise go far astray, he reaches out his hand to me. Morning and evening he takes good care of me wherever I may be. (Text 1563 from German) Introit for the Second Sunday in Lent My heart hath talked of thee, seek ye my face; thy face, Lord, will I seek: O hide not thy face from me. The Lord is my light and salvation: whom then shall I fear? Processional Hymn 350 Stand up and bless the Lord Announcements The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 2 St. Thomas Kyrie Eleison Frank Nakashima Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Collect of the Day Almighty God, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross, give us faith to perceive his glory, that being strengthened by his grace we may be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word The First Reading Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.’ Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. God said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.’ Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church Thanks be to God 3 Psalm 22:22-30 Plainsong Tone V.1 The Second Reading Romans 4:13-25 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many nations’)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations’, according to what was said, ‘So numerous shall your descendants be.’ He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead 4 (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith ‘was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ Now the words, ‘it was reckoned to him’, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God Gradual Anthem Eternal Lord of Love see Common Praise # 174 for text The Gospel Michael Jonas Mark 8:31-38 The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ 5 The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Sermon Revd Elizabeth Welch The Nicene Creed Let us confess our faith, as we say, We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. 6 With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Confession and Absolution Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. Let us confess our sins remembering before God the times when we have fallen from temptation into sin. Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, 7 have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Holy Eucharist Offertory Hymn 468 To Abraham and Sarah Thornbury The Prayer over the Gifts God of wisdom, may the light of the eternal Word, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, guide us to your glory. We ask this in his name. Amen. Mass Setting St. Lawrence Mass Eucharistic Prayer 1 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God, for you created all things. You formed us in your own image: male and female you created us. When we turned away from you in sin, you did not cease to care for us, but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarah 8 Bruce Wheatcroft gave the promise of a blessing to all nations. Through Moses you led your people from bondage into freedom; through the prophets you renewed your promise of salvation. Therefore, with them, and with all your saints who have served you in every age, we give thanks and raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He healed the sick and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners; he opened the eyes of the blind and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and to those in need. In all things he fulfilled your gracious will. On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “ Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” 9 After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “ Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Gracious God, his perfect sacrifice destroys the power of sin and death; by raising him to life you give us life for evermore. Therefore we proclaim our hope. Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory, we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one holy people, a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, 10 thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread We break this bread, Communion in Christ’s body once broken. Let your Church be the wheat which bears its fruit in dying. If we have died with him, we shall live with him; if we hold firm, we shall reign with him. The Communion Agnus Dei Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world Grant us peace. Holy things for Holy People Thanks be to God. All people seeking God are welcome to come forward to receive communion. If you do not wish to receive communion, please come forward to receive a blessing, indicating this by holding your hands together in prayer, and bowing your head. Prayer after Communion Creator of heaven and earth, 11 we thank you for these holy mysteries, which bring us now a share in the life to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing God the giver of life give you hope. Christ the Redeemer, give you peace. The Holy Spirit who inspires all, give you joy. And now the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. Amen. In some communities musical instruments, including the organ, are not played at all during Lent in order to preserve the penitential nature of the season, and so that the joy of the Easter Season can shine forth more gloriously. Though during Lent we begin and end our services in silence, please join us for coffee and conversation following the service, for in all times and in all places we are asked to joyfully give thanks unto God for our many blessings.
