ORDER OF WORSHIP
Welcome to this service of Christian worship sponsored by the members and friends of First Church,
United Church of Christ and First United Methodist Church for Holy Thursday. The alternative and more
traditional name for this day is "Maundy Thursday," which is a derivation of the Latin "Mandatum
Novum," meaning "New Commandment." The new commandment comes from John 13:34 where Jesus
said: "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also
should love one another" (NRSV). As we gather this evening, we recall the events leading to Christ's
crucifixion, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will help us to love each other more effectively. Thank you
for your presence.

Where charity and love are, God is there.
Christ's love has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him.

CALL TO WORSHIP
This is a day to remember.
We remember the Passover Jesus shared with his disciples.
We remember his new covenant of broken bread and cup.
We remember his night alone in the garden in prayer.
We remember his arrest, his trial, his sufferings, the denial of his friends.
We remember this day and thank God for Jesus’ presence with us then and now.

PRAYER
Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal,
Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment:
To love one another as he had loved them.
By your Holy Spirit, write this commandment on our hearts.
Help us serve as Jesus served,
and to not be afraid to offer ourselves for the sake of others. Amen

as we proclaim the mystery of our faith:
Christ has come among us. Christ has died.

RECEIVING THE BREAD AND CUP
All are welcome to receive this Holy Communion. You are invited to the rail, as the ushers
direct you, using the center aisle. Please kneel or stand as you are comfortable. After you have
received the bread, please hold it until you are invited to dip it into the chalice. When you have
done so, you may consume the elements immediately. Please remain at the rail until the words of
dismissal are shared with you. The Communion elements be used tonight are gluten-free.

STRIPPING THE CHURCH
The candles are extinguished and all linens, paraments and banners are removed from the
worship space during the singing of the hymn. Upon conclusion of the hymn there will be a time

Spring Fair –Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 8-2
This is to be a church wide fair with men, women, and youth helping. The Spring fair is
very important to the life of the church with all its many programs. We need everyone’s
help in making this fair very successful in order to meet our budget. A sign-up chart will be
in the Welcome Center, soon. The following rooms are available to sign-up for: Yard
Sale/Attic Treasures, Rummage Sale, Garden Gallery, Gift Room, Jewelry Room, Used
books & Games, Movies & Music, Baked Goods, Cookies, Candy & Pies. Donated items
may be brought in Sunday April 27th –May 1st from 9-12 or 6 pm- 8pm. Food items only can
be brought in anytime on Friday May 2nd.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE & CORRECTIONS
As a preliminary step in creating a new church directory, we are asking all who call FUMC
their church home to update their contact information, including cell phone numbers and
email addresses. We are also making adjustment in the church office that will allow us to
be more effective stewards of the resources you so generously share with us. First, we
encourage all to let us know whether you prefer to receive the Messenger by mail, email,
self-downloaded from our website, or picked up at the church. As of June, we are no longer
going to be mailing the Messenger by bulk-rate as, due to changes with the U.S. Postal
Service, many do not receive it in a timely manner. We also want to give church people who
own businesses the opportunity to buy advertising space in the newsletter. Are you a
business leader who would like to advertise in the Messenger? Let us know. On May 4th,
11th, and, if necessary, the 18th, tables will be set up in the Welcome Center alphabetically,
so that you may take care of updates and preferences quickly. If you have any questions,
