Old Testament Reading 3 Then Daniel 5:1-6, 18-31 this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4 Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him. 5 Then these men said, “We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.” 6 Then these high officials and satraps came by agreement to the king and said to him, “O King Darius, live forever! [...] 9 Therefore King Darius signed the document and injunction. 10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. 11 Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God. 12 Then they came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction, “O king! Did you not sign an injunction, that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing stands fast, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.” 13 Then they answered and said before the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or the injunction you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.” 14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him. 15 Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.”16 Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!” 17 And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.19 Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions. 20 As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish. The king declared to Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” 21 Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! 22 My God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.” 23 Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions—they, their children, and their wives. And before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm Reading (read responsively) Psalm 2:7-12 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, or his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. New Testament Reading James 1:12 is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 12 Blessed Gospel Hymn “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Carl Gotthilf Gläser (1784-1829) Public Domain Hymn #493 Gospel Reading Luke 9:23-27 The Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to You, Lord Christ. 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, Lord Christ. Gospel Hymn Continued: “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” verse 3 The Sermon “Daniel - Faith in the Fire: Persevering Under Pressure” David Drake The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. * ’catholic’ refers to the universal Christian church, regardless of denominational affiliation The Prayers of the People Father, we pray for Your holy catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve You; That Your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of Your Word and Sacraments. Today, we pray for Church of the Redeemer in Camden, NC and Church of the Resurrection in Lutherville, MD. That we would continue to partner with our Diocese to proclaim Your Gospel. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do Your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in Your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. We pray for the lives of the unborn; That they may be protected and delivered safely. We pray for our service men and women; That they may serve with courage and be brought safely home. We praise You for Your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in Your heavenly kingdom. Let us now pray for our own needs and those of others, and give thanks for the blessings of this life. (The people may add their own petitions and thanksgivings.) O God, You make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such a blessing through our worship of You, that the week to come may be spent in Your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Confession of Sin Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen. The Absolution and Peace Almighty God, have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. (please stand) The peace of the Lord be always with you; And also with you. Announcements Offertory Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost. Holy Communion The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is right and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we praise You, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing these words to proclaim the glory of Your Name: Sanctus Hymn #S129 Music: Robert Powell (b. 1932) Copyright: Setting: Copyright © Church Publishing, Inc. (All may sit or kneel) Holy and gracious Father: In Your infinite love You made us for Yourself; and, when we had rebelled against You, fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, You, in Your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, Your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to You, the God and Father of all. He stretched out His arms upon the cross, and offered Himself, in obedience to Your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night He was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when He had given thanks to You, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper He took the cup of wine; and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. (Spoken) We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling His death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer You these gifts. Sanctify them by Your Holy Spirit to be for Your people the Body and Blood of Your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve You in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all Your saints into the joy of Your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through Your Son Jesus Christ: By Him, and with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is Yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. (Spoken) And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Alleluia! The Gifts of God for the People of God.
