The Prospect PTO “Decades of Rock 'n' Roll” 2015 Annual Benefit will be a rockin’ good time as you mingle with 50’s and 60’s rock icons during the welcome reception in our auction viewing room. Then, head into a “totally tubular” dining room for an 80’s-themed sit-down dinner and live auction, followed by music from the 80’s cover band, the Spazmatics. Not ready to go home just yet? We’ll be delighted to serve you a nightcap and late-night munchies as you dance to the disco sounds of DJ Lee Michaels in our 70’s-inspired nightclub, Club 100 North (see more details below). Attire for the evening is "Rock 'n' Roll Chic" (what you may wear to an upscale concert, i.e., dressy jeans with nice blouse or blazer, little black dress with boots, etc. - see attached photos for examples) AUCTION DETAILS… We are bringing back everyone’s favorite sign-up events, such as the class parties, parent paddle party, and a new "March Madness Happy Hour” where parents can meet out at Neat Kitchen & Bar in Westmont from 4-6pm on March 21st to watch the NCAA tournament games while enjoying some food and drinks! New for this year is our Wine Pull, where you purchase a cork for $25 that randomly corresponds to a bottle of wine on display. Our wine offerings are valued anywhere from $25 to $100, including an exclusive Cakebread Rubaiyat, a cherished Silver Oak Cabernet, and a bottle of "Drops of Jupiter" red blend signed by all of the band members of Train! We also have some exciting live auction items, such as the “Xtreme Xperience” exotic supercar drive in a Ferrari 458 or McLaren MP4, a Life Fitness treadmill for your home, a chance to fly your college flag on the Prospect flagpole for one week during basketball or football season, and a one-week stay at a luxurious vacation home in Beaver Creek, CO! Moreover, we will have several raffle items to choose from, as well as many special school experience items and silent auction packages. CLUB 100 NORTH... Stay for our new after-auction party and enjoy a relaxing time mingling with Prospect parents and dancing to the 70's tunes of DJ Lee Michaels! The families of Coe and Middaugh are sponsoring this portion of the night, so we will be offering the "Coe Cosmopolitan" and the "Middaugh Martini!" Please join us in supporting the future of our children’s education - get your tickets today!! Upcoming Assemblies Discover the beauty of Chinese culture through the artistry of dancers. Presenting: Chinese Folk and Classical Dance Tuesday, March 24th: K-2 (1:00 p.m.) and 3-5 (2:00 p.m.) Chinese dance has a history over 5000 years and is deeply rooted in their culture. Dance plays an important role in different sections of society. Different dance forms have different cultural values and significance. The performance includes a variety of traditional dance styles taken from several Chinese provinces and historical periods including: the Han and Tang dynasties, Mongolian, Xin Jiang styles. The artists will perform six to eight dances and describe where the dances originated, how the costumes were developed, and what the traditional story is behind each dance. Save the Date! Robert Crown Linda/Michael Puberty Education Programs All 5th Graders and 4th Grade girls are invited to attend the Linda/Michael Programs at the Robert Crown Center in Hinsdale. Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Information and RSVP forms are now available on the PTO website and through the Prospectus. Reservations are required. Prospectus Page |3 IT'S SCIENCE WEEK! Science Week is in full swing. We hope everyone enjoyed the assembly on Friday. Students learned about gravity, momentum and how planes can stay in the air. The presenter from The Science Alliance even gave some students the opportunity to try out a jet propelled bike and a hovercraft. Mad Science is conducting workshops in each class room this week to complement each grade's curriculum. The daily Prospect Science Week Trivia Contest continues until Thursday. Please encourage your junior scientists to participate. A drawing is held each day from among those students who answer correctly from each grade. SCIENCE FAIR ON THURSDAY Don't forget to join us on Thursday, February 26th for Prospect School's sixth annual Science Fair from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the gym/MPR. We can't wait to see what our students have come up with. Even if your children are not presenting a project this year, please stop by and take a look. Your children can see the interesting and fun projects their fellow students have on display, and they may get some great ideas for next year. Shop n Share Tuesday, March 24 Thank you to all who participated in the fundraiser night at Chipotle last month. We raised an amazing $1,575 for our school! Olé! Please mark your calendars for the next Shop n Share event which will be with Scapa Italian Kitchen on Tuesday, March 24. They will donate 10% of all dine-in and carry out orders when Prospect School is mentioned. Mangia! Prospectus Page |4 CALLING ALL MOMS!! The Girl Scouts at Prospect need your assistance to put on the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance. The Dance will be held April 10, 2015 from 6:30 PM-8:30 PM in the MPR. District News Through March 13: Illinois 5Essentials Survey Our D181 schools are once again administering the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. Teachers, middle school students, and parents are being invited to take the 15-minute survey to help identify strengths and areas for improvement in our schools’ climate and learning conditions. Families, students, and applicable staff can access the survey online: https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois-pilot. D181 Preschool Registration Begins February 2 Registration for the District’s Preschool / Early Childhood program is ongoing and takes place at Oak School during school hours. Registration can also be completed during the District-wide registration event on February 24 at Prospect School (5:30-7:30pm). Parents must bring a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate along with documents to show residency in the District. A complete list of acceptable documents is listed on the District website: www.d181.org > Resources > Registration. D181 Kindergarten and New Student Registration on February 24 and 25 District 181 looks forward to welcoming families for kindergarten and new student registration on February 24 and 25 at the child's neighborhood elementary school (9am-3pm). Families can also attend District-wide evening registration on February 24 at Prospect School (5:30-7:30pm). Seeking Community Input for Facility Planning If you would like to participate in discussion about the District's long-term facility planning, we invite you to attend a focus group on either February 18 or February 19. All sessions take place at Prospect School. Participants will be asked to discuss their thoughts and perceptions about the District, talk about their understanding of facility needs, share facility desires, and consider various options related to future planning. Sessions will be led by our partner firm Patron Insight. The focus groups are one of several opportunities we will provide for parents and residents to share their thoughts and feedback during this process. March 2: Summer Camp Expo All community members are encouraged to save the date for our annual Summer Camp Expo, being held Monday, March 2 at Prospect School (5:30-8:30pm). This event will welcome representatives from overnight camps, recreational activities, sports camps, fine arts camps, and educational enrichment opportunities, as well as camps and services for students with special needs and advanced learners. Thank you to Mrs. Kryger and Mrs. Gonzalez for their informative and inspiring presentation on SELAS at Prospect School at the February PTO meeting. WARM thanks to Teacher Appreciation Committee co-chairs, Sarah Ryan and Charity Richardson for organizing a delicious soup lunch for Prospect teachers and staff, and to the many generous parents who contributed soups, chili, salads, baked goods and much more! Big thanks to Art Awareness co-chairs, Barb Maduzia and Lucia Davila, and the many Art Awareness parent volunteers for offering engaging classroom discussions on the cultural tradition of Chinese New Year through the “World Cultures Through Art” program. Much appreciation goes to Pamona Namkung for organizing another engaging season of Junior Great Books discussion for our second and third graders! Thank you to Theresa Gannon for serving as Prospect School liaison for the Girls on the Run program! WARM thanks to Hot Lunch Committee co-chairs Cyndi Breslow, Melissa Staab, and Amy Wallace, and the wonderful parent volunteer team for serving up a heart-warming hot lunch for our students on another cold winter day! Thank you to 5th Grade Activities Co-chairs Cyndi Breslow, Lindsey Rosland, Sayle Little, and Michele Kreischer for planning a fun-filled pool party for our 5th graders, and the many parent volunteers who helped chaperone and contributed treats for this special event! BIG thanks to Science Week co-chairs Louise Collis and Jill Backus for successfully launching a fun and enriching Science Week with exciting science assemblies by Science Alliance! A heartfelt thank you to Sandy Forsberg, Karen White, Joan Clopton, Rohit Gupta, Judy Schloegel and Kate Whelan for their enthusiasm and dedication for another successful year of Junior Great Books! The Linda and Michael Programs, “A Part of Life Begins”, will be presented for all students in 5th Grade on Thursday, April 16th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The Robert Crown Center is located at 21 Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale. Fourth Grade girls are invited to attend the Linda Program. There are only 15 spaces available for 4th Grade girls, so please turn in your form as soon as possible. Fifth Grade girls who attended last year do not need to attend as the content in this program will be identical to last year. The Linda and Michael Programs seek to prepare girls and boys for the onset of puberty and the physical changes that will follow. The Linda Program discusses menstruation in detail with an emphasis on feminine hygiene. Diet and eating disorders affecting teenage girls are briefly discussed. The Michael Program emphasizes hygiene and respect for others. Both programs describe the male and female reproductive anatomy and function. Each student is provided with a comprehensive booklet that covers the material in the program. The PTO will cover the admittance fee for each student and one accompanying adult.
