Vernon is Getting in the Loop!
A Hearing Loop - also known as an
Audio Loop, T-Loop, or Induction
Loop - is an assistive listening
system that allows people with
hearing loss to hear easier by
directly sending sound to hearing
aids, cochlear implants, or boneanchored aids, without background
noise. Public spaces that have a
Hearing Loop installed should
display this standard sign.
1
A sound source - voice, TV, theatre or church sound
system, or audio system - is captured using a
microphone or an audio line-out connection.
2
The sound signal is connected to a Hearing Loop
Amplifier. The amplifier generates a current to pass
the sound signal to an induction loop - usually copper
tape or wire.
3
The Hearing Loop typically surrounds the area where
the listening audience is located and creates a
magnetic field.
4
This magnetic field can be picked up by hearing aids,
cochlear implants, or bone-anchored hearing aids
equipped with a Telecoil, also known as a T-coil.
5
Each person's amplification tailors the sound to the
specific needs of each individual. Distance from a
sound is not a problem, nor is background noise.
Sound is delivered directly into the ear with the full
range of sound frequencies required for intelligibility.

Update
Sudden Hearing Loss is a Medical
Emergency. Seek help right away!
SEMINAR:
Why amplification is not enough, and smart
ways to overcome some listening barriers.
We have been seeing a higher than usual rate of suddenonset sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus in the clinic
this past fall and winter. The window of opportunity to
successfully treat sudden hearing loss is very brief ideally within 72 hours of onset up to 6 weeks, after
which treatment often has little or no positive effect.
Hearing aid, cochlear implant, and
bone-anchored hearing aid
technologies have improved over
the years, yet wearers still struggle
with two main problems:
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS & SERVICES
Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency and needs
to be investigated right away. Too often people wake up
and notice one ear doesn't feel or sound normal but
shrug it off thinking it's due to a cold, an ear infection, or
maybe just earwax. Have it checked right away! The
hearing loss could be sensorineural and require
immediate treatment to prevent permanent loss.

2. Distance

2. Pure: rocker switch; size 312 battery
3. Carat: rocker switch; size 13 battery
Siemens eCharger™ allows end-users
to recharge their hearing aid batteries
without removing them from the
hearing aids - each aid is simply placed
inside the eCharger™.

Sudden hearing loss is rare and when it does occur it is often
idiopathic (no known cause). In rare cases, sudden hearing
loss can be a sign of stroke, demyelinating disease, or
tumour. Err on the side of caution - all sudden hearing losses
should be investigated as soon as possible.

The aids not only use the information picked up by
their own two microphones, but also the acoustic signal
from the two microphones of the other hearing aid.
This way, each hearing aid works with input from four
microphones. So together as a bilateral pair, these
hearing aids create a virtual eight-microphone network.

In order to emulate natural binaural listening and its
advantages, the Binax aids are wirelessly linked which
enables an exchange of audio signals between them, so
they can work with input from both ears just like the
brain.

Aid volume, programs, and tinnitus masker can be
controlled using EasyPocket, EasyTek, EasyTek App, or

Carat (13 battery) models include a telecoil!

Q&A
is your opinion about leasing
Q What
hearing aids? - David (Vernon, BC)
investigated this option for clients about 18 months
A Iago.
Calculating the difference between purchasing
amplification outright versus leasing over a period of
three years revealed a significant difference.
Review leasing program at this link:
http://www.hearingaidrental.ca/
Things to consider before committing to a lease:
http://www.audiologyonline.com/articles/hearingaids-leasing-versus-financing-1117
Leasing hearing aids may be appealing due to its
exchange and upgrade options. However, the
concept is really no different than leasing a vehicle.
Overall, you pay much more in the end than you
would if buying outright.
I recommend people take the time to fully
understand a hearing aid lease agreement. A direct
cost comparison should be done to make an
informed decision about the investment difference.
I have sample calculations on hand for anyone who
wishes to review some comparisons.
