STEWARDSHIP AND THE SUNDAY GOSPEL Most of us have heard many times the story of how God tested Abraham, as reported in our first reading from Genesis. Often there may be various emotional reactions to the situation as it unfolds. However, there are two important aspects of the narrative that we sometimes miss. Yes, Abraham was tested, but so was his son Isaac. It would seem that Isaac was a willing participant in the ordeal. Isaac clearly did not protest nor resist lying on the altar in preparation for what would occur. Isaac offers an example of one of the basic tenets of stewardship: he trusted completely in God (and in his father, as well). That kind of total trust is difficult, but if we do not trust in the Lord, it is hard for us to make the kind of commitment to stewardship and discipleship the Lord wants from us. The other feature of this story we sometimes miss is the parallel between Abraham and his son, and what would occur between God and His only son, Jesus Christ. Everything from the mountain to hauling the wood up the mountain to the father sacrificing his son to deliverance from death is reminiscent of Christ’s sacrifice for us, and God’s willingness to offer “His only begotten Son, that those who believe in him may not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) For more reflections on scripture and stewardship log on to: www.thecatholicsteward.com BRISTOL LODGE MONTHLY DINNER The next Bristol Lodge Dinner will take place this Wednesday, March 4th at 5:00PM. Suggested menu for this month will be burgers, or hot dogs, potatoes or vegetables, salad, dinner rolls or bread and dessert. Those who would like to contribute but have little time to cook are welcome to donate to the “Bristol Lodge Soup Fund”. A parishioner is happy to prepare gallons of soup for our monthly meal. The soup fund will assist us by providing the ingredients for these hearty soup recipes. Volunteers are needed to prepare and donate a portion of the entrée or any accompaniments; servings to feed 10-15 people will insure that there will be plenty of food to go around. Please be generous and consider preparing food for our monthly meal. Donations may be dropped off either here at the parish hall kitchen by 4:30PM or directly to the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen at Immanuel Methodist Church, corners of Moody and Cherry Streets by meal time at 5:00PM. VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR BRISTOL LODGE Our Youth Minister, Laura Peterson, is looking for a volunteer to pick up food at Sacred Heart (first Wednesday of the month at 4:30PM) and drive it over to the Bristol Lodge. You can contact the Religious Education office at 781-893-8461 if you can help with this ministry for the next few months. BOY/GIRL SCOUT SUNDAY MASS This Sunday, March 1st , at the 10:00AM Mass, we will celebrate Boy and Girls Scouts. We hope that all scouts, their pack leaders and assistants will join us for this special Mass which will be followed by a coffee and donut social in the parish hall. All are welcome! DOMINICAN SISTERS BAKE SALE The Dominican Sisters will host their annual Bake Sale on the weekend of March 21st and 22nd here at Sacred Heart Church. The Sisters will be selling bread, brownies, and apple and blueberry pies all baked accordingly to the Dominican Sisters recipes. MARCH 1, 2015 PARISH NEWS, Continued CHARITABLE FUND IN MEMORY OF CATERINA ALLIA On Monday, April 20, 2015, Tony Allia, a parishioner of Sacred Heart, will participate in the 119th annual Boston Marathon, running for Team NWH. Tony had established a fund in honor of his mother Caterina Allia who lost her courageous battle with breast cancer in May of 2014. The Caterina Allia Fund through the Newton-Wellesley Charitable Foundation helps breast cancer patients and their families seeking treatment at the Vernon Cancer Center. Caterina’s love and care for others and especially those she met through her care at Newton Wellesley Hospital inspired her to help other breast cancer patients and their families. Donations raised by Tony as he trains for the Boston Marathon, will directly benefit patients and treated at the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton Wellesley Hospital. If you wish to make a donation log on to www.nwh.org/TeamNWH and search for Tony Allia listed as a Runner. Once on his personal fundraising page, just click on the big blue button. Donating via the Team NWH website is simple, fast, and secure. It is also the most efficient way to support the Caterina Allia Fund. The Allia family thanks you for your consideration. PART-TIME CUSTODIAN POSITION We are in need of a part-time custodian (20 hours per week) to work here at the parish. Responsibilities would include cleaning the church and parish hall and Religious Education, setting up the hall for parish functions. The position would entail some heavy lifting and interested candidates must undergo CORI background check and participate in the parish safety training in compliance with the Archdiocesan Child Protection Policy. Hours and days are very flexible. For more information please contact Father Dennis. LENTEN REGULATIONS 2015 ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence. FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. FASTING, ALMSGIVING, AND PRAYER are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. PARISH NEWS, Continued “TRE ORE” FILM & DISCUSSION SERIES Tre Ore is a liturgical service which commemorates the Passion of Christ, specifically, referring to the three hours that Jesus hung on the Cross. We will examine and reflect on TRE Ore, The Seven Last Words spoken by Christ in this series of homilies given by Father Robert Barron with reflections by Cardinal Timothy Dolan in this pre-recorded Tre Ore service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. The series will be presented in the lower parish Religious Education Center over the course of three Tuesday, evenings, March 3rd, 10th and 24th from 7:30-8:45PM. EASTER BASKETS FOR FRANCISCAN HOSPITAL Once again Sacred Heart will sponsor the annual Easter Basket gift drive for the children at the Franciscan Hospital for Children and Day School. Those who wish to help with this spring service project may donate small gifts suitable for assembling into Easter Baskets for the young patients of the Franciscan Children’s Hospital. Suggested gifts include age appropriate movie DVD’s or Music CD’s, sensory toys that light or sound, small toys, hand-held games or travel puzzles and games, infant toys, rattles and teethers, young reader softcover books, first books for toddlers and children. Due to potential allergens the hospital cannot accept candy or plush toys/animals. STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND LENTEN SUPPERS During all the Fridays of Lent, with the exception of Good Friday, our parish will hold Stations of the Cross twice every Friday at 3:00PM and 6:00PM. Following the 6:00PM evening Stations we’ll hold potluck suppers in the parish hall featuring a meatless menu of soups and light entrees. Please consider joining us for these rituals of prayer and devotion and to spend an hour sharing a meal with your fellow parishioners. All are welcome to bring their favorite Lenten dish! THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU Here at Sacred Heart as in many parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Boston the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered every Wednesday from 6:30PM until 8:00PM. The initiative “The Light is On For You” is an opportunity to experience the healing grace of God through the sacrament of reconciliation (confession). We encourage everyone to take advantage of this extended time in which to participate in this healing sacrament. For the benefit of the students and families of our Religious Education program we will designate suggested dates during which each grade level can take advantage of receiving the sacrament of reconciliation. The suggested schedule is; March 4th Grades 3 and 4, March 11th, Grades 5 and 6, March 18th, Grades 7 and 8 and March 25th Grades 9 and 10 MARCH 1, 2015 ADULT FAITH FORMATION RITE OF SCRUTINIES During the season of Lent catechumens, the title given to adults preparing for baptism, enter the final phase of preparation to receive their sacraments during the Easter Vigil Mass. Their journey began with the sense that God was calling them into a deeper relationship with Him. Each catechumen connects with their local faith community to journey with them in the process of initiation. As the catechumen draws closer to reception of sacraments they participate in the rites of scrutinies. The purpose of the rites of the scrutinies are spiritual in nature. The scrutinies are intended to purify the catechumens’ minds and hearts and to strengthen them against temptation, to purify their intentions, and to help make them firm in their resolve, so that they may remain more closely united with Christ Jesus and make progress in their efforts to love God more deeply. The rites of scrutinies take place on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent in preparation for baptism of the Elect at the Easter Vigil. Please join us in welcoming the Elect and keeping them in your prayers as they continue their journey of faith. ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASS “I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” Mark 13:11. These words from Mark’s gospel remind us of God’s invitation to share in the grace–filled journey of life. Adult Catholics (ages 18 and older) who have been baptized, received First Holy Communion but did not have an opportunity for further religious education instruction, and did not receive the Sacrament of Confirmation are invited to come join us in faith formation. Through participation in the adult confirmation program you will have the opportunity to complete the sacraments of initiation and receive the gifts of the Holy spirit. For more information or to register for the adult sacramental preparation program please contact Bernadette Scalese at (781) 893-8461. The ancient Tenebrae service, from which this service is derived, dates back to the 7th or 8th century. Coming from the Latin word meaning "darkness" or "shadows", Tenebrae depicts, through the successive extinguishing of candles and dimming of lights, the flight of the disciples and the events leading up to the crucifixion. The Tenebrae invites the faithful to meditate on the passion, death and burial of the Lord as we await His resurrection through scripture and song. The gradual darkening of the church symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the return of the light is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death and darkness. All are welcome to attend this very special event. There will be refreshments in the social center following the program. For further information, or if you should have any questions, contact us by e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone (781-391-1457).
