Bulletin Reflection:
Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his only
son, Isaac. St. Paul reminds us that God
Himself “did not spare his own Son.” Are my
gifts to the Lord - of my resource, of my time,
of myself - also sacrificial?
Living Stewardship:
We are grateful this week for all stewards in
our parish who, though fasting, become more
conscious of their faith and its interaction in
daily life!
PETITIONS FOR MARCH
1. Let us pray for those involved in
scientific research that they may serve
the well-being of the whole human
person. (Pope Francis)
2. Let us pray that the unique contributions
of women to the life of the Church may
be recognized always. (Pope Francis)
3. Let us pray for our parish of St Hugh of
Lincoln that all shall become closer to
Our Lord during this holy season of
Lent.
4. Let us pray to St Patrick and St Joseph,
who are celebrated this month that we
may become firmer in our faith and
gentler in our way with every one we
meet.
5. let us pray for our pastor, Father Joe,
that the Lord may grant him good health
and many blessings as he celebrates
soon his 40th anniversary as a priest.
6. Let us pray for peace in our world.
7. Let us pray for those souls who have
died at hands or terrorists in our world
recently, Many of whom were martyrs
for our Christian faith.
FROM THE PASTOR
PASTOR’S DESK:
My words to your today are very difficult to write. I have been putting it off for a couple of
weeks, but the time has come now for you to know. A couple of weeks ago I met with Bishop
Murphy and submitted my retirement papers. He reluctantly accepted them, and so this June I will
be retiring and leaving Saint Hugh of Lincoln Parish. It has been a bitter sweet decision for me.
As many of you will remember I had a heart attack a few years ago at the beginning of our Centenary celebration. Although it was not a serious attack, my health has been deteriorating over the
last two years. This past fall, when they implanted a defibrillator and pace maker, I had to face the
uncomfortable and
distressing fact that I am no longer able to serve the people of Saint Hugh parish (you!) as well as
I want to and should be able to. It is time to hand the reigns over to someone a little younger (but
not as good looking, of course). Now that the decision has been made, we will begin a process to
select a new pastor for our parish. The ultimate decision will rest with the Bishop, but he will rely
on many people for input.
The first step was to announce to you my decision. I am speaking at all the Masses this weekend
to
accomplish that. (Imagine the miracle of a pastor speaking at all Masses without asking for
money!) I have already informed the Staff and the Sisters in the convent. Now that you all know,
we move to the second step, The Office of clergy personnel will send the notice of an open parish
to all priests. Those qualified can submit their names for consideration with a letter of explanation.
These will be sent to the personnel assignment board who will make recommendations to the
Bishop.
Perhaps the most important step is the Parish Open Meeting. This special meeting will provide an
opportunity to any and all parishioners to have some input into the new pastor of Saint Hugh. You
must remember, though, that this is only one part of the process and the Bishop has many other
sources of input which he must consider as well. He will base his decision on all the information
he receives plus his own knowledge of the needs of the whole Diocese of Rockville Centre. Here
is the information on the open meeting:
Parishioners are invited to indicate the skills and qualities they feel are necessary to lead Saint
Hugh
Parish into the future at a special meeting on
Wednesday March 11 at 7:00 PM in the Church.
The meeting will be conducted by Msgr. James McNamara, our Vicar, Msgr. Peter Pflomm, Director of Clergy Personnel and Msgr. John Bennett, our local Dean and pastor of St. Patrick,
Huntington.
It has been a great honor and joy to serve at Saint Hugh for the last 10 years. I arrived at St. Hugh
for the first time in January of 1974 as a young deacon. I look forward to working together until
my term is
completed in June. May God bless you all.
Fr. Joe

This Sunday we’re celebrating a Family Mass at 11:30 with our level 2 students participating. Please
join us in the Parish Center afterward for drinks, snacks and a fun craft activity for all the children!
The children in our Religious Education program who attend classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and
Wednesdays are given the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation every year during one
of their sessions. Next week, March 10th, 11th and 12th, the children in levels 5 through 7 will receive
the Sacrament at 4:15 pm in the church. Unfortunately we can’t offer this to our Sunday students
because the church and our priests are not available due to the celebrations of Mass. However, our
Sunday students in levels 5, 6 & 7 are invited and strongly encouraged to come on any of the days listed
above to receive the sacrament as well.
ADULT SPIRITUAL FORMATION
LENT IS A TIME
“Lent is a time when we relive the passion of Christ.
Let it not be just a time when our feelings are roused,
but let it be a change that comes through cooperation
with God’s grace in real sacrifices of self. Sacrifice, to be
real, must cost; it must hurt; it must empty us of self. Let
us go through the passion of Christ day by day.”
--- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

BILLIONS OF LIVES LOST
RIGHT TO LIFE
Worldwide, it has been estimated that there have been more than 1.73 BILLION abortions
over the last 42 years. This is a trend that is not lessening but growing exponentially as more
countries embrace and legalize abortion. We must pray and work to end abortion and
euthanasia.
