Leaders in the life sciences are regularly faced with difficult dilemmas and tough challenges. The
key to outstanding leadership is deep understanding and awareness of oneself, one’s colleagues,
one’s organisation, and one’s environment—coupled with the capacity to build relationships and
trust, vision and strategic thinking about drivers for change, and decisive action and crisis management.
Our Life Sciences Leadership and Business Strategies Course explores in theory and practice
what it takes to be an effective leader. Participants will get the core management skills which are
needed to fully leverage the human capital of their department or company. The course aims to
fill the gaps between leadership and management, vision and reality, strategy design and implementation in the Life Sciences / Health / Insurance Industries. Hence, science-minded managers
should be turned into capable business leaders.

COURSE OUTLINE
This course offers the basic principles of innovation leadership and gives insight
into legal and health economics, portfolio management, and regulatory and
financial basics in life science.
The course programme covers four days including presentations, company and
industry relevant interactive teaching with case studies, practical exercises and
short communication by participants.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this module the student should be able to:
1.Understand basic principles of innovation leadership for profitable growth, results through speaking and listening, lead cross cultures, and communi­-
cation strategies,
2.Describe new tools and practices in bringing a new molecule to market,
3.Be capable to utilise basics of legal and health economics including
constraints of conducting a successful biopharmaceutical business,
4.Recognise evolving expectations from the regulatory and financial
environment,
5.Outline the basics in various types of alliances, valuation of technologies, portfolio management, joint ventures, partnerships, pricing of drugs,
6.Understand structuring successful collaborative arrangements between
pharmaceutical companies, SMEs and universities,
7.Appraise the role and key competences and tasks of a CEO, including
perspectives of an employee, a CEO and a board member.
TEACHING FACULTY
The teaching faculty consists of internationally and nationally renowned scientific
and consultancy managers from life science organisations, government and
academia.

TITLE AND CREDIT POINTS
This course is an elective module of the Master in Medicines Development
(MMD) Programme but can also be booked as a stand-alone continuing
education course. Successful participation is awarded 3 ECTS.
COURSE FEE
• CHF 3’750.– standard course fee
• CHF 2’250.– for university employees and non for profit organisations
The fee includes meeting materials, lunch, coffee. After registration you will
receive an invoice. For short notice registration, please provide a copy of the
money transfer at the registration desk.
CANCELLATION
Fees will be refunded, after deduction of a 30% administrative charge, if cancellation is received in writing (by email, letter or fax) by February 23, 2015.
ECPM may transfer your registration to another member of your company.
In the unlikely event the course is cancelled, our liability is limited to refunding
workshop fees. Speakers are subject to change without notice.
