March 11—Protect your home and assets against nursing
home costs. If you have a health crisis, are you prepared? Do you
have the Estate Planning documents required to get the care you
need and to protect your family and your assets? Back by popular
demand, Certified Elder Law Attorneys Patrick Curley and Lucy
Budman will discuss MassHealth (Medicaid) planning and
eligibility, asset protection strategies, the five-year look back
period and revocable living trusts. This presentation is ideal for
seniors, the children of seniors, or anyone else interested in
learning about Estate Planning and Asset Protection. Please be sure
to RSVP to 978 762-0208 to reserve your space.
March 18th-Prescription Advantage - Each year thousands of
seniors in Massachusetts reach the gap in their Medicare
prescription drug coverage (Part D) that is often called the “donut
hole.” This year, when Medicare beneficiaries (who do not get
Extra Help) reach the donut hole, their Part D plan will pay 55% of
covered brand name drugs and 35% of covered generic drugs.
Although 55% coverage of a brand name drug might sound great,
it’s really not that great if you take a brand name drug that costs
$300. You will still have to pay $135!! This is where
Prescription Advantage can help. Kathy Devine from the
Executive Office of Elder Affairs will be here to explain how
Prescription Advantage can help to fill the hole in your Medicare
prescription drug coverage.
You won’t want to miss this important presentation!
Traveling Chef Program—Join us on Wednesday,
March 4th at 12pm.
This month’s entrée will be a New England Tradition
featuring clam chowder with oyster crackers, roast
turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo, leaf lettuce &
tomato, Kaiser roll, corn on the cob & a whoopee pie.
Suggested donation of $2.25 per person.

TRIAD Corner
The Danvers TRIAD Council is a partnership
which includes the Sheriff and District
Attorney of Essex County, the Danvers Police
and Fire Chiefs, the Council on Aging and
supportive services, and seniors. During this tax season seniors
need to aware of the following: Secretary of the
Commonwealth William F. Galvin recently joined the Internal
Revenue Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in
warning Massachusetts taxpayers about the rise of telephone
tax scams. “With tax filing season upon us, my office has
received a number of calls from people who have been
contacted by someone claiming to be from the IRS, telling
them they are in tax trouble and offering help in resolving it,”
Galvin said in a news release. “No matter how intimidating the
caller sounds, you should never give personal information, like
Social Security numbers or bank account numbers, over the
telephone to a cold caller.” IRS commissioner John Koskinen
said in the release that the IRS has seen a surge in these phone
scams in recent months. “If someone calls unexpectedly
claiming to be from the IRS with aggressive threats if you
don’t pay immediately, its a scam artist calling,” Koskinen
said. “The first IRS contact with taxpayers is usually through
the mail. Taxpayers have rights and this is not how we do
business.”
Galvin said the tax scammers are using the internet as well as the
telephone.

Social Service News & Announcements
If you haven’t already, take a look at the Resource
Center bulletin board in the hallway across from the fitness room.
There you will find information on relevant topics such as:
Medicare, Social Security, Senior Safety, Scams, Veterans Benefits,
and Assistance with paying for Utility Bills and Food. Keep
checking back as information will be added and updated regularly.
MEDICARE FRAUD AND ABUSE…DID YOU KNOW…?
Over the past year, Medicare paid for health services for approximately
51 million individuals at a cost of about $604 billion. The Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) estimated that improper
payments—some of which may be fraudulent—were almost $50
billion.
Fraud, waste, and abuse contribute to the rising cost of health care.
Taxpayer dollars lost to fraud, waste, and abuse affect all of us.
You can help stop fraud and abuse by reviewing your Medicare
statement (Medicare Summary Notice – MSN) or Part D Explanation
of Benefits (EOB) to make sure Medicare is not charged for items or
services you did not receive. If you have a question or concern
regarding a Medicare claim, you should first discuss it directly with
your physician, provider, or supplier that provided the service.
Assistance is also available through the Massachusetts Senior Medicare
Patrol (SMP), which is a group of trained volunteers who teach
Medicare beneficiaries how to protect their personal information,
identify and report errors on their health care statements and report
fraud and abuse to the proper authorities. You can contact the
Massachusetts SMP program at Elder Services of the Merrimack
Valley, 1-800-892-0890.
For further assistance with any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE
Program. Trained SHINE counselors offer free, confidential counseling
on all aspects of Medicare and related health insurance programs. To
make an appointment with the SHINE counselor here, please contact
the Danvers Council on Aging at 978-762-0208. You may also call the
Regional SHINE office at Mystic Valley Elder Services in Malden at
781-388-4845. Please leave a message and a counselor will return your
call within two business days.

How to Obtain the Senior ‘Circuit Breaker’ Tax Credit
If you’re a Massachusetts property owner and are age 65+, you’d probably welcome a break on
your property taxes. Dream on you say? Actually, such an option exists and, if you’re eligible, it’s
yours for the taking. According to the MA Department of Revenue, some 957,000 residents 65 and
older in the state are eligible to receive the tax credit. It’s called the Circuit Breaker, and according to this month’s
AARP Bulletin, in 2012 more than 86,000 Massachusetts taxpayers claimed nearly $67 million in refunds under the
program, according to the state Department of Revenue. The average refund in 2012 was $774. The Circuit Breaker
refund acts the way an electrical circuit breaker would work, but here it prevents property taxes from exceeding an
older person’s income and ability to pay taxes.
Eligible taxpayers can file for the credit up to three years retroactively, so read the Bulletin story today and learn
more about this valuable tax refund. Go to http://states.aarp.org/ma-tax/
Do you or someone you know need help managing tax time stress? Look no further than AARP Foundation
Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service. A dedicated corps of
volunteers provide face-to-face tax assistance and preparation services at more than 200 sites across the Bay State.
