Planned Workshops
Fruitful Facilitation – Celia Brockway, 4-H Agent, Isle of Wight and Southampton
Counties. Be refreshed with ways to make group meetings pleasant, principled, and
productive. Whether leading a group discussion or serving as a discussion participant,
you can help propel your groups toward quality decisions that lead to positive results.
This workshop is for individuals – group leaders and participants alike, who are always
in the midst of making group decisions and in search of new ways to make group
discussions dynamic.
Exploring the 4-H Horse Program – Bertha Durbin, Organizational Leader of the
Hoof-N-Woof 4-H Club in Albemarle County for 25 years. A look at the many facets
and opportunities available in the 4-H Horse Program for youth that have access to
horses and those who do not. This session will provide information on everything from
Horsemanship Skills to Model Horse Shows, Drill Teams to EquiSmartz. A significant
amount of time will be devoted to answering audience questions.
Playing Nice in the Generational Sandbox – Tara Brent, 4-H Agent, Lancaster and
Northumberland Counties; and Christina Ruszczyk-Murray, 4-H Agent in Northampton
County. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to generational styles and
differences and tools to communicate effectively with others of a different generation.
Be ready to reminisce about your childhood and have fun bridging the generational
divide.
Understanding the NEW ALL STAR Application Forms – Billie Jean Elmer, 4-H
Agent, Surry County. While the content has remained the same for the All Star
applications, the format has tremendously changed. This workshop will provide helpful
hints on submitting applications and submission rules and deadlines.
4-H Online – Jeremy Johnson, Associate Specialist, Volunteer Development. Haven’t
registered you or your family online yet? This workshop will take out the mystery and
questions and give you an opportunity to finally do it! A very basic session will be
conducted on how to create a family profile and add projects, etc. Laptops will be
provided, left set up, so volunteers can enroll onsite.

Educational Adventures
NASA Wallops Island – Jessica Beebe, NASAVisitor Center Education Program
Coordinator. Visit the NASA Visitor Center and learn the history and Missions of
Wallops Island. You can explore the museum and watch videos at the Science on the
Sphere Theater. Free.
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge – Amanda Walker, Park Ranger. The story
of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge started well before 1943, when it was
established as protected federal land. Join a park ranger for an hour-long program as
we navigate the history of the refuge, its connection to the local people, and your role in
the continuing success of this inspiring place. Afterwards, an optional tour of the
Assateague lighthouse will be offered. Fee waived for our group.
Captain Dan’s Boat Tour – Weather conditions permitting. Captain Dan’s Around
the Island tours are 2-2.5 hours in duration. You will travel approximately 22 miles in a
25' double canopy pontoon boat, passing completely around the Island of Chincoteague
and between Chincoteague and the Island of Assateague. You will have the opportunity
to view the ponies, birds and other wildlife that frequent the Islands and marshes in the
area, as available. Also, you will travel through waters where a variety of sea life can
often be seen including dolphin, large rays and sea turtles. Fee: $35 per person,
children 12 and under is $30. Fee must be paid separately from the Conference
registration and at the same time you register for the Conference. Tour is limited
to the first 12 who sign up – first come/first served. Make checks payable to Va. Beach
4-H Adult Volunteer Leader’s Association and send to Conference Registrar (address
on 1st page). (Put Boat Tour in the Memo line of your separate check). For more
information on the tour, visit Captain Dan’s website:
http://www.captaindanstours.com/. Boarding for the tour is within walking distance of
the Fairfield Inn.
Chincoteague Pony Centre – At the Chincoteague Pony Centre you will get to interact
with real Chincoteague Ponies. The Pony Centre is the home of the largest herd of
Misty family ponies on the Island and many veterans of the Pony Swim. There is a
possibility that the museum will be open in time for our conference, but the ponies
definitely will be out to see and the gift shoppe will be open. There is a $5 fee for the
museum (pay at door), but it is free to see the ponies and visit the gift shoppe. The
Pony Centre is located at 6417 Carriage Drive, Chincoteague. For more information,
visit their website – http://www.chincoteague.com/ponycentre/index.html
If you have any questions on these tours, please contact Jackie Tull at (757) 787-1361, Ext. 11 or
