C ATHOLIC P ORTSMOUTH
Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth
8 MARCH 2015 – THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT - YEAR B
Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross is a devotion usually recited throughout Lent which
recalls Jesus’s passion, death and resurrection. The devotion has a rich history
and developed in an attempt to reproduce the Holy places in other lands so
that pilgrims who could not travel to the Holy Land could enter into the great
mystery of these events in a spiritual and devotional way. Later, when access
to the Holy Land was blocked by Muslim Turks, reproductions of the stations
began to appear throughout Europe and the devotion became more popular. When we meditate
on the events of Jesus’s passion, death and resurrection, we are not only remembering what Jesus
did for us but Jesus calls us to an ever deeper union with himself by living out the mysteries of his life.
In Matthew 16:24-25 Jesus tells his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny
themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it,
and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.” These words of Jesus were something that I had
always struggled with. However, in 2011, I joined the diocesan pilgrimage to World Youth Day in
Madrid. It was here, touched by the Holy Spirit, and through my experience the Stations of the Cross,
that I received new spiritual insight into the meaning of carrying the cross. As I approached each
station I began to realise that every suffering I had experienced, the Lord also experienced in his
passion death and resurrection. For every physical wound, for every false accusation, for every
humiliation and many other sufferings, the Lord experienced it all in his own life, and in his passion,
death and resurrection. So when we suffer, Christ not only understands the pain we go through but
he is truly with us in our suffering. But Christ does not leave us alone to carry the cross; Christ carries
the cross with us. How does he do this? Christ is present with us through the sacraments, through the
Church, through our family and friends, and those we encounter in our daily lives and in many other
ways too. But in suffering there is also hope, where our wounds of suffering are transformed into new
life of the resurrection. By taking up the cross we are called to die
and reject sin. By doing this we are raised to new life, and through the Holy Spirit we become more
Christ like as we become more aware of Christ’s presence in our souls. We also become more aware
of the love and freedom he offers us and the call to share it with others.

MASS DUTIES AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES
Please would those
who help
at Mass give Anne, in writing, the dates
of those Saturdays they cannot
manage in April, May and June, by
Saturday March 14th at the latest. Give
the note to Anne or place it in the
envelope in the stewards' basket.
A big thank you to all those who
supported the various Fairtrade events
around the city during our successful
Fairtrade
Fortnight.
The
Church's
involvement in Fairtrade is based on
Christian witness. Christians are called to
love the poor – but also to ask questions
as to why they are poor. Fair trade is not
about charity, it’s about giving people
the dignity of working their way out of
poverty, providing opportunity and hope
for the future. It’s about developing a
different way of buying things, whether
we’re choosing coffee or chocolate, tea
or
t-shirts.
